College football first-year coach grades

If last year was an F then we did one win better, and that's a D. You can debate if winning against ranked teams merits grading on a curve but that is all subjective.

Only one recruiting class of his players are even there. Most here bitched and moaned about Butch being unable to motivate HIS OWN players. What makes you think Pruitt is gonna motivate them?
Agree....and the 3 “best” recruits did Zero!!!!!
JJ, Emerson, and 4* DT (forgot name and too tired to look up) that never made it on campus.

Pruitt gets a"D". (1) Tried to take a RPO team and turn it into a power run team = complete failure. (2) Hired a "air raid" OC and then kept the brakes on him all year = complete failure (3) complete lack of in game adjustments on D when he is supposedly supposed to be a defensive genius; (4) Had the genius idea of throwing these kids under the bus on national TV during a Bama game and the expecting them to play for him or be motivated;(5) 0 for ever on those momentum killing on-side kicks; (6) sounds like an Alabama kindergarten teacher when he talks in public

College football first-year coach grades: Florida's Dan Mullen gets an 'A,' UCLA's Chip Kelly does not

Jeremy Pruitt 5-7.... There were bright moments, like the win at Auburn, and awful ones like losing to Missouri and Vanderbilt to close out the season. Baby steps and patience, Vols fans. C+

That's about right imo. The late losses sting hard but beating a ranked Auburn and Kentucky is still pretty damn sweet. All in all it was a decent first year for Pruitt.

At least he didn't get an F in the spoken English

How in hell do you draw that conclusion? Expexting a minimum of 6-6 and beating Vandy isnt anywhere near indicative of someone thinking it's the 90's.

Have you even paid attention to the past decade? If so, you'd realize that it would be unfair to believe that we should automatically win these "weak" games. I'm disappointed as much as you are that we didn't finish on a strong note and we got blown out, but I'm not holding it over Pruitt's head.

We didn't just lose to Vandy, we got blown out, and looked utterly unprepared to play them.

On top of that, we had six 25+ point losses on the season, the team did not improve as the season progressed, the opposite actually, and at the end Pruitt and the staff seemed unable to motivate these players in any way shape or form.

Thats not a problem of fan expectations being too high.

Where is the defense?
You’re cracking me up! With an actual running game, defense wouldn’t be great but better. I understand your frustration, but hang in there. 2019 maybe a game better. 2020 we see significant strides.

Can somebody explain why, even to this day, fans are still referring to the AU game as a "top 20 win"? AU is 7-5, isn't ranked at all, and was a program in turmoil much of the season anyway... hell, they're trying to get rid of their coach as these posts are being typed. It was a good win, but nothing like it's being characterized by some. Not my coach, so it doesn't really matter to me; but I don't really see how that season gets a passing grade.

Auburn was ranked #21 at the time they played. They don't go back and change that just because they didn't finish ranked... They never have.

I believe Auburn was a good win too, but agree with the poster you quoted.

When Kentucky beat Florida, Florida wasn’t ranked. They are in the Top 10 now.

How a team finishes matters in grading the quality of the win.

I know how it works, but at the conclusion of the season, after it's clear the team has been overrated all along, you have to concede they weren't really a Top 25 team. If they had finished 4-8, would folks still be referring to them as a Top 25 team simply because they had once been ranked?

Exactly, of course; I"ve never heard of it ever being any other way... including on Volnation.
