College football first-year coach grades: Florida's Dan Mullen gets an 'A,' UCLA's Chip Kelly does not

Jeremy Pruitt 5-7.... There were bright moments, like the win at Auburn, and awful ones like losing to Missouri and Vanderbilt to close out the season. Baby steps and patience, Vols fans. C+

That's about right imo. The late losses stings hard but beating a ranked Auburn and Kentucky is still pretty damn sweet. All in all it was a decent first year for Pruitt.

A C+ is way too generous given the way we lost the last 2 games......

We could hire Nick ****ing Saban, him go 12-1, and yall would still find a way to bitch about the loss.

Here is how I view it. A C is an average grade. We had 2 games that were above average (UK and Auburn). We had 3 games that were below average (UF, Vandy, Mizzou). The other 7 for the most part kinda fell in line with expectations. Had we lost close games to Vandy and Mizzou, I would have been OK with a C+ ranking; however, we were unprepared, not competitive, and had numerous players that looked like they quit....I can't give above average for that.

No, just some of us here choose to hold our program to a higher standard.

Or you just think your entitled to instant success. This team is terrible, yet Pruitt coached them up enough to win two games he shouldn't have. He's already got half the amount of ranked wins Butch did in his first year... We ran out of gas at the end of the year because we don't have a single linemen, offense or defense, that would start anywhere else.

If we had won them, you would probably have found something else to complain about.

No, through 10 games I thought Pruitt was doing an above average job. I had some minor criticisms but all in all, he was doing an above average job. The last two games occurred and I had to adjust my opinions based on what I saw those 2 games.

See my post above. No one was expecting SEC Championship game. But to not show up and be ready to play against your in-state rival with a bowl game on the line, sorry but that's on Pruitt. We clearly acted like we didn't want to be there. We were NOT ready to play. The level of effort from that team was piss poor and that IS on Pruitt. I'm sorry but no! He does not deserve a passing grade and it's a complete red flag to me.

Dude, 6-6 for bowl eligibility and a win over freaking Vandy isn't exactly reaching for the moon here. Give me a break!

This team was favored in 4 games all season. They were predicted to go 3-9 or 4-8 by many folks. Give them a break and start being realistic.

What's he gonna do to seniors and juniors that don't give a **** because of the previous coach's mentality? Kick them off? Not play them? He's been fighting an uphill battle against those guys since he's got there.

Vegas had us at 5.5 wins for the year. We didn't overachieve. We didn't even achieve. But you keep making excuses. Aside from the wins, the team at game 12 did not look improved from game 1. To me that is the most telling thing about this season. We did not play with effort or discipline. That has nothing to do with talent. It has everything to do with a coach that couldn't pull it out of his players.

In the first 10 games of the season, we had a team that did not quit and showed fight. We weren't always prepared and it was not always pretty but at least the fight was there. After they get a dominant win against a Top 15 team in Game 10, they decide to roll over and quit the last 2 games. Something just doesn't add up here.....

Only one recruiting class of his players are even there. Most here bitched and moaned about Butch being unable to motivate HIS OWN players. What makes you think Pruitt is gonna motivate them?

Because that's what good/great coaches do, which is why I said it's a red flag.

Got any examples to back this claim up?

Saban in his first year improved Bama from 6-7 to 7-6. Swinney in his first year took Clemson to a 7-6 record... a year after going 9-4 and a year prior to going 9-5. Those are two great coaches. Meyer took Zook's UF 7-5 team to 9-3 and OSU from 7-5 to 12-0, but they were already stacked... So who else can we compare to UT's situation?
