In the first quarter, the Vols failed to get convert on a 3rd down play on a drive going towards the TN River. It was a normal series of downs with ONE major exception. When third down was over, our punting team RACED onto the field and lined up for a punt and this caught UTM waaaay off guard, as many Skyhawks were standing when the ball was snapped. The left end on UTM probably being confused and frustrated, rushed our punter and was called for Roughing the Kicker, and I believe it was one of the next two plays where Oku ran for a long TD. THAT is coaching and those 6 points are awarded to Dooley and his staff. Congrats to the UT coaches for a well called game and, for finally having a game plan.

What a concept,,, punting on 4th down. I say its more bad coaching on UT Martins part. Either way, great job by Cunningham (Oscar nominee).

True. Cunningham had a few punts within the 10 yard line, I believe. One on the 6, another that was downed just inches away from a touch back, which was pushed back due to a "illegal touching" penalty. I didn't really get that call. Can someone clarify?

If a player steps out of bounds he can't be the first to touch the ball.

The illegal touching penalty was called because one of our players touched the ball on the 6 yd line causing the ball to carum down to the 1. The line of scrimmage defaults to where the ball was originally touched by the kicking team... hence the ball being spotted at the 6. The illegal touching you are referring to is almost always confined to a WR stepping out of bounds on his own will and then catching a pass.

Sorry, y'all missed the point. The punting team raced onto the field without a huddle and snapped the ball so quickly that UTM never had a chance to get set. We have never done this before to my knowledge. That is the difference between the old coaching staff and the new forward thinking coaching staff.

This reminds me of the ancient days when the Vols actually emphasized and used special teams play to gain advantage. We beat Ga Tech back in 1984 largely because we punted on third down and totally flipped the field. We were backed up inside our twenty with twenty yards or more to go for the first down. We ran a bunch of subs in, one of whom I noted was Jimmy Colquitt. I told my dad we were going to quick kick. We lined up in the shotgun and Ga Tech had no one back. The ball ended up inside the Tech ten and after a defensive stand we had a short field to go for a score. Ended up winning the game at the very end on a FG.

Thank you wvVol for deciphering my message. This was as crucial a series as we had in the whole game and while the boys on the field executed properly, they followed the instructions of the coaches and did something out of the ORDINARY. God knows we have done nothing but ordinary for far too long, which is a shame considering all the wasted talent we have every year on the field.

I am pretty sure that this rule doesn't exist in college football.

Not only have we tended toward "ordinary" but our execution at even that has been lacking. For much of the last decade my heart has been in my throat nearly every time we punt.
