Coaching staff is our weakness

This post here is proof of you feeding the knuckle heads. How can you post such a reasoned post and then some of the other stuff?

The passing game will most likely be edge and TE in the flat/middle to soften up the defense and help the run game open up a shot down field later in the game. And yes it will be a hard fought close game.

The middle has been open in the 3 games prior to this one and they haven't taken advantage of it yet.

Last season against Florida same scenario and they refused to make an adjustment.

Swing plays, screen plays ect will not work against Florida to much speed with no hesitation.

Consistently dropping passes =lack of coaching
Poor tackling technique=lack of coaching

Poor player attitude=lack of coaching
Not being ready for games= lack of coaching

See a theme?

Didn't mention the last two and a player with a poor attitude has little to do with the coach and more to do with the player. If you are Division 1 athlete playing at a upper level school, and you let a ball hit you in the helmet that isn't thrown overly hard again has little to do with coaching. It has to do with concentration and effort. UT fans seem to have an obsession with blaming the coach for all that ills the team. I played in college and have coached at every level outside of professional athletes. If a team can't get up for an opponent and play hard at every opportunity, that is on the players not the coach. If you are an offensive lineman and you can't block another player that is 50 pounds lighter than you regularly, then effort has to be questioned. Unless you are dumb enough to believe they are being taught not to block them.

Biggest fear: Vols fire Butch, hire Tom Herman

We do not want that.

No concern for the Gators regarding that. UT doesn't have the financial means to make that a reality.

They've hitched their wagons to the CBJ staff. It's sink or swim at this point.

Maybe Tom Sherman but not Tom Herman, we all know what another coaching search will bring so I am not sure what the thought process is with that.

We're not even top ten in the country in talent.

And, as the rest of your hypothesis is predicated on an incorrect valuation of the talent, what remains?

Well, you disagree with a majority of analysts then. Take up the argument with them.

UT has lost more than their share of winnable games over the last 3 years.

UT has lost the last two to UF that SHOULD have been wins. UT fielded the better team. In '13, UF was terrible. They lost to Ga Southern (who finished 4th in their FCS conference). They beat two SEC teams that year.... UT and UK.

Last year's collapse is well documented and discussed.

During that time, both coordinators have been replaced with what should be upgrades. So what is the common denominator from a decision making level within the program?

Replacing coaches and coordinators is equivalent to rearranging deck chairs. If they fail.... the trail leads back to one guy.

Who is responsible for vanilla play calling, or bad execution? Who are we talking about in this thread?

Here's a hint...they are the same person.

When a player doesn't get it done, they are benched. When a coach doesn't get it done, they are fired.

eventually you have to draw a line in the sand either get it done or move on.

Butch has done great things at Tennessee but he cant get over the Florida hump even after having a double digit lead late. He choked it happens but If it does not happen this year with yet another beat up Gator squad I think the birds start chirping with most of our talent bolting for the league.

Daj has lost the objectivity he's always been so proud of.... and has become an apologist.

He has a formula that he likes and believes in. When Jones arrived and there were concerns about his recruiting, Daj said that Jones had a "+2" in the coaching factor. Meaning he avg'd winning two games per year against teams that according to his formula had more talent.

I don't have access to his numbers but I don't see more than one win since Jones came to UT against a team that would have more talent according to his system. They've lost at least 4 games to teams with less talent and maybe more.

Of course most said that was explained by youth and depth though Daj had previously said that those didn't really shift his model. Teams with more talent per the recruiting rankings still won on avg 70% of the time.

Now? Well apparently UT isn't talented after all AND it is not reasonable to expect Jones to win more games against more talented teams than he loses to teams with less talent.

There isn't a fan here that wants Jones to fail. But this IS his year to show that he can compete at the top. We've had MORE than enough "next year" excuses.

no one is upset about winning, and if there are those that would rather lose than be wrong, then go with God.

but i can assure you, the reason for all the criticism is based simplly on the product we've seen thus far, and extrapolating it to how that same play will translate to beating a team like FL.

that's not negative. that's not being a bad fan. and the misery is only a result of 0-11, 0-9 and 1-6. and a fan base desperate to see those results change. period.

i haven't seen you offer a single sentence of analysis or fact based reasoning on any of the topics at hand.

you call people names, and ride coat tails of other posters. when you can participate in a "discussion" with people that don't share your narrow point of view, feel free to jump in.

until then, my advice is stay out of the deep end of the pool. it's over your head
.

Should be a sticky.

We have all talked about how horrible the offensive system is, how bad the play calling is, OLine coach sucks, player development is abysmal, Etc. With all if that said, our players are still top 5 in the country in talent.

The game with Florida and the remainder of our games will hinge on the players feeling loose. I am 100% convinced that CBJ is wound up so tight, that the players play tight as well. Just my opinion.

He's wound up tight because he's scared and in over his head.

Would never happen. Our boosters only hire the cheap help. They played chicken with Gruden and lost.

a) he's a hundred years old, and do we want a guy that quit on his last team?
b) he's already employed. at Florida as a consultant.

We'll know over the next 4 games. He won't be able to hide it during this stretch

That's the thing though if they don't come out and at the very least have a few series where they block well this 4 game stretch is going to be extremely painful.
Florida has a stout line.
Georgia has a pretty solid line
ATM has to sure fire NFL Defensive ends.
Alabama is Alabama

You are absolutely correct. That's why I say there be no hiding who he is during this stretch. We'll know at that point if hes a coach or a recruiter.

I think the coaching staff is the weakest part of this team, and that is including the OL play. Several personnel and scheme mistakes I see that are taking place currently.

1) Why did they move a center (Thomas) with supposedly 2 bad ankles to tackle. They took him from interior where he could give/receive help from guards to an island to block premier pass rushers. Not smart. I understand moving Kendrick to the left side, but why not play Richmond at RT which he played in HS? He is at least healthy.

2) Hurd is a between the tackles runner. I do not know if the coaching staff is calling the stretch for Hurd or if he is looking to break to the outside. Either way lower the shoulder and get what you can. Preferably running out of I-formation, but can also be run from single back formation.

3) I think Kamara and Kelly are better suited to run the zone read concept. Kamara has the speed to hit the outside unlike Hurd, and can make a cut and get up field. Kelly from what I have seen has very good patience and vision to allow the play to develop and holes to open and attacks when the given the opportunity.

4) I also believe the coaching staff is trying to limit the amount of runs Dobbs is getting per game. That is completely fine, however when you are in a dog fight with App State, call his number let him pull it and UT wins by 2+ scores.

5) Why in the world did they recruit a 5 star CB and move him to receiver to throw him the ball twice. With the injury to Sutton, and Moseley/Martin looking less than stellar, why is he still on the offensive side of the ball.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
