Coaching Search Thread

Focus and comprehend. Making a 68 team field for a power conference team is not considered a great year.
Your hero did not make the NIT field either. Cal was picked to finish seventh and in the top 60 per the money people. Vegas odds.

Stay tuned.

UT should probably just focus on hiring a basketball coach and not worry about Martin.

No SEC experience sounds to me like he's setting us up for a great hire. He also basically said that money would not be an issue this time around because our athletic department was going great.

That's how I read it. I see mid-major, good hire, pay the money.

I'd like to think a lot.

You honestly believe this fanbase, or for that matter the entire SEC fanbase knows a coach who's spent his entire career coaching in the Philippine Basketball Association? And on top of that would be happy with the hire?

Reality is calling, and you should answer.

Its funny a guy we ran off is close to signing a McD AA that he had interested in us , Swanigan, and a 6'11 guy projected to be a top 7 NBA pick, along with a high four star small foward , while we struggle to hold on to low three stars and look for a coach? Not funny to me.

Cuonzo and Tyndall both are average coaches . Anyone with any basketball knowledge knows this

I'm from South Carolina, went to undergrad at Clemson during the Shyatt era and then returned for the Purnell era. Purnell had Clemson rolling, and posting winning records in the ACC, winning 20 games a year, and recruiting well. That was the fact of the situation. Here is Clemson's record before Purnell and during Purnell:
Larry Shyatt:

20-15 (first post Rick Barnes season) (5-11 ACC)
10-20 (4-12)
12-19 (2-14)
13-17 (4-12)
15-13 (5-11)

Oliver Purnell:

10-18 (3-13)
16-16 (5-11) NIT
19-15 (7-9) NIT
25-11 (7-9) NIT Runner up
24-10 (10-6) NCAA T
23-9 (9-7) NCAA T
21-11 (9-7) NCAA T

So, does this look like a program trending up or down under Purnell? Oh, and his final class included 2 4* players and a 5* player, which, you being a big Clemson fan and all, should know people were really excited about.

Wait, what about fan attendance in Purnell's final year, I mean, since folks were so frustrated, I'm sure no one was showing up.

"The year before Brownell was hired, when Oliver Purnell went 21-11 in 2009-10, the Tigers averaged 9,465 fans per game, close to the building's 10,000-seat capacity. In Brownell's first campaign, that number dropped to 8,289 while Clemson won 22 games and returned to the NCAA tournament."

So it seems like Purnell was pretty much selling out Littlejohn. Again, since you're so in touch with Clemson you should realize that this simply doesn't happen very often.

Here is another Clemson fans take on Clemson Oliver Purnell:

"The vast majority of Clemson fans were happy with the job OP had done. While it would not have surprising for other schools to come after OP given the job he was doing at Clemson, the sudden nature of his departure was shocking and disappointing for almost all. There was some frustration and concern that his teams had become one-dimensional and could not get past the first round of the dance, but those that called for his head were a scant few."

So anyway, these are the facts. You can dispute them with your vague "I know donors" thing, but I'm not sure that will be very effective.

Thought you went to Purdue? Hence your love for Cuonzo.

Based off of what I saw mentioned in the rockytop insider article the guys I would want are Wade, Mack, White, or Underwood. These are all realisticlly hire able guys.

http://www.rockytopinsider.com/2015/03/27/tennessee-basketball-coaching-candidate-hot-board/

If we get Ron Hunter, do you think we could get R.J Hunter, who will be a senior next year. Do you think maybe we could also get Kevin Ware (former starter for Louisville) who will also be a senior next year. I think if we do hire him then I definitely think we will see R.J Hunter as a senior transfer.

If rick Barnes is available as the next coach then Whe'd be crazy not to offer him. Hes made 22 career NCAA tournaments we've made 19 as a school. Now come on guys he'd stabilize the program, and he'd be the best coach we've had since Pearl. I hope we go after him and land him.

Dude, Mike Miller? Mr. HART, if you make that hire, all transgressions will be forgiven. That's Jason Kidd and Steve Kerr 3.0.

Umm what? Mike Miller the small forward from Florida who has no coaching experience?

Because I didn't see him on either list of candidates, nor should he be.

No, he's the basketball version of Mark Richt and stability is not a good reason to hire someone. Stability is the by-product of hiring a good coach.

My dad went to Purdue, so I grew up a Purdue fan, hence my love for Cuonzo. So, anyway, care to discuss the facts I presented about Purnell or are you going to take a pass?

You posted his record, I know his record there's nothing to dispute. Cuonzo avg 22 wins per seasons and wins increased every year he was here, yet fans were frustrated with the postseason performance or lack thereof. Purnell's moving on was greeted as an opportunity to upgrade, not the sky is falling. I guess he was successful at Clemson, by their standards, but would not have the resume that should wow anyone in Knoxville. If I'm hiring anyone with limited tournament experience I'm hiring someone who's 20 years younger. You're "suggestion" was stupid from the get go.

First two 60 year olds to be called should be Byrd or Barnes.

Yes and clearly he's a terrible coach... 16 tournaments in 17 seasons at Texas is just god awful.

If you like languishing in the second tier, winning absolutely nothing of importance and wasting tons of talent, he's your guy, just like Richt. Georgia football is "stable", would you want to be endlessly frustrated like they are? I'd rather aim higher and possibly fail than to settle for mediocrity.

I've heard Richard Pitino. I hope not. Someone over there must be attuned to the idea that it's a bad idea to hire someone because of their dad.
