Coaching Search Thread

I know you're hung up on Martin and all but you seem seriously butt hurt right now. Tell you what, I'll go make a post about O.P. on Tigernet, and return with the results.

How am I butthurt? You bring a name to our board that you expect us to accept when he has a grand total of 6 NCAA games in his 30 year career, across 5-6 schools and then you get pissy when someone shoots down his resume? Sorry we don't accept mediocrity. If you make it over to Tigernet don't worry bout venturing back over here. We already lost BTO, now we're "you not returning" away from having a solid board again.

Really? Jimmy Cheek and Susan Martin are everything wrong with the UT athletic department. If you don't understand that then you are part of the problem.

Hamilton had already derailed football and began our quest to be Buyout U before Cheek ever came through the door. During Mikey's rein of terror we had four pesidents..hello? The problem may be you and the "fire'em all "crowd.

See I don't have a problem with you shooting down his resume. If you read my posts you will notice that I don't think he will even be considered, but you acting like he was run out of town is both wrong and stupid. Furthermore, I will internet wherever I please. Last I checked, you're not a Volnation bouncer.

Stay tuned Texas St. or Gardner Webb is where Martin will end up soon. He took a potential tourney roster in a horrible conference and managed to parlay that into zero postseason. Cal State Northridge beat his ass this year.

He is on his way to a top ten or maybe five class at Cal. I doubt he is going anywhere soon.

I kind of like the idea of Hurley...He seems very passionate and is very animated...Having Coach K as sort of one of your allies isn't a bad thing...

Prohm ?...bammer...Do we really need another bammer ?

If we have to take a mid major coach Bobby Hurley would be a pretty good pick.

Chad Withrow did say on air yesterday a friend texted him that he saw Pearl in Knoxville yesterday, but was also quick to stress that he thought Pearl still had a home in Knoxville and his wife's family is there.

Right now no one in the upper administration at UT gives a rats ass about athletics. Susan Martin and Jimmy Cheeks would be thrilled if they could rid most sports at UT mainly football and that is fact!

Hunters HC record is 361-265. Not that impressive. Only had 1 NCAAT appearance before GSU. Idk if you take a mediocre mid-level coach, just to get his son for a year (who in all fairness, is a very talented player).

The guy has coached a ton of games. Winning over 300 games is impressive at his age. Losing over 200, not so much.
He coached at IUPUI, which was NAIA up until 99, and took the school through that transition. Not an easy task.
Agreed, his son should not factor in the equation one iota.

No way, they love it. Who else on campus would they steal money from?

Once again, I doubt you have any pulse on the Clemson program and fanbase. Public frustration with a coach is enough to make them want to reconsider a career elsewhere. It happened here, it happened to Tubby Smith, its potentially happening with Josh Pastner. None of those schools saw their coach leaving on their own, for inferior jobs.

Laughable

Its funny a guy we ran off is close to signing a McD AA that he had interested in us , Swanigan, and a 6'11 guy projected to be a top 7 NBA pick, along with a high four star small foward , while we struggle to hold on to low three stars and look for a coach? Not funny to me.

He could strike out on all but Dillard. Then it'll be funny.

I'm from South Carolina, went to undergrad at Clemson during the Shyatt era and then returned for the Purnell era. Purnell had Clemson rolling, and posting winning records in the ACC, winning 20 games a year, and recruiting well. That was the fact of the situation. Here is Clemson's record before Purnell and during Purnell:
Larry Shyatt:

20-15 (first post Rick Barnes season) (5-11 ACC)
10-20 (4-12)
12-19 (2-14)
13-17 (4-12)
15-13 (5-11)

Oliver Purnell:

10-18 (3-13)
16-16 (5-11) NIT
19-15 (7-9) NIT
25-11 (7-9) NIT Runner up
24-10 (10-6) NCAA T
23-9 (9-7) NCAA T
21-11 (9-7) NCAA T

So, does this look like a program trending up or down under Purnell? Oh, and his final class included 2 4* players and a 5* player, which, you being a big Clemson fan and all, should know people were really excited about.

Wait, what about fan attendance in Purnell's final year, I mean, since folks were so frustrated, I'm sure no one was showing up.

"The year before Brownell was hired, when Oliver Purnell went 21-11 in 2009-10, the Tigers averaged 9,465 fans per game, close to the building's 10,000-seat capacity. In Brownell's first campaign, that number dropped to 8,289 while Clemson won 22 games and returned to the NCAA tournament."

So it seems like Purnell was pretty much selling out Littlejohn. Again, since you're so in touch with Clemson you should realize that this simply doesn't happen very often.

Here is another Clemson fans take on Clemson Oliver Purnell:

"The vast majority of Clemson fans were happy with the job OP had done. While it would not have surprising for other schools to come after OP given the job he was doing at Clemson, the sudden nature of his departure was shocking and disappointing for almost all. There was some frustration and concern that his teams had become one-dimensional and could not get past the first round of the dance, but those that called for his head were a scant few."

So anyway, these are the facts. You can dispute them with your vague "I know donors" thing, but I'm not sure that will be very effective.

Martin took over a team that didn't make the tourney last year and lost to graduation it's point guard, who had started for three years, and for those three years averaged 14.4 points and 5.2 assists, and a 6'10" guy who averaged a double double while making 54% of his shots. They had closed out the season last year with a 5-8 record. The nucleus is there for success, but to suggest this was a team on the cusp of a great year is silly. Martin will be fine.

Focus and comprehend. Making a 68 team field for a power conference team is not considered a great year.
Your hero did not make the NIT field either. Cal was picked to finish seventh and in the top 60 per the money people. Vegas odds.

Stay tuned.
