Coaching Search Thread

Per Rob Lewis on TOS:

Steve Prohm -- Murray State

Brad Underwood -- Stephen F. Austin

Archie Miller -- Dayton

Mike White -- Louisiana Tech

Dan Hurley -- Rhode Island

Bobby Hurley -- Buffalo

Rick Byrd -- Belmont

Will Wade -- UTC

Buzz Williams -- Va. Tech

I heard several say last year that Buzz would've jumped at the TN job if it had been open before he went to VT.

He's definitely an interesting guy. Has to change his shirt at halftime of every game. One issue at VT is they had a couple leave their program early and just this week their leading scorer, Adam Smith, decided to transfer for his final year. Not real sure what's going on with all of that.

Not sure what is with the hate for Dave Hart. Did he get burned on this? Sure. Should he have probably stayed away from Tyndall b/c of the existing issues? Sure. But the Southern Miss stuff didn't surface until after Tyndall was hired. I'm confident he thoroughly checked it out. It sucks but he's done a good job otherwise. And if you don't think Hart cares deeply about this job you are dead wrong.

However, hart put all his eggs in the basket for White and when he turned us down, he literally spent less than 12 hours with DT and then hired him. That's not top notch performance.

Maybe. I've never heard the 12 hours part. But that's probably the norm for most coaching searches anyway. And we were running out of options for people who actually wanted the job. Expect more of that in the coming weeks.

No show cause, just got them on probation and left. Southern miss, he got them on probation and left. Proven cheater.

The USM stuff wasn't known at the time, how hard is that to understand. All anyone knew was one violation 5 years ago at Morehead where they self imposed their probation.

I see it being Will Wade, but that is just a hunch as he passed on the Charlotte job to stay at UTC.

It will need to be a quick hire for recruiting in all likelihood.

I agree 100% there was a reason he passed on the Charlotte job. He quickly turned UTC around. His style of play fits current roster and recruits. And when he is successful here he won't be looking to jump he grew up in TN this is his home state. I could see him having success and staying here the rest of his career like coach K...

This guy can flat out coach! In his second year he was the SoCon coach of the year.

Jerod Haase from UAB? Long time Roy Williams assistant and worked a mircale at UAB this year. I know a lot people in the coaching professsion are very high on him.

I'll save you some time this morning. Here's what you'll hear:

- we need to hire somebody that is a winner, somebody that has a track record of success

- we need a person who is a great fit

- someone with boundless energy; enthusiastic; loves people

- a great communicator; loves to be around people who care about the University of Tennessee

- a great recruiter- that's our lifeblood

- ability to connect with people, connect with players, connect with recruits, sees the big picture on our campus and appreciate being a part of our university

- genuine priority on academic success

Can Butch coach basketball too?

I wish tgeyd just hire somebody who could be competitive and beat ky.

Oh we will back a proven cheater like Tyndall who's had every school on probation he's been at, but by no means will we support the guy who built tennessee basketball. Makes sense smh.

You realize why he ISN'T the coach now right?

That would be the easiest fix, Bruce would jump to come back here, he still lives here, it would be the biggest story/homecoming in college sports. Match that with butch on the football side and we might actually win some stuff. If VFL really means anything they'll bring back Bruce. But in reality here comes another no name to put 12k in the arena.

Dude, put down the crack pipe!

Pipe Dream: Gregg Marshall

Realistic expectations of who we actually have a chance with:

1. Mike White. He turned us down last year, but hopefully Hart is willing to budge on what stalled it last year. He's got SEC background as an assistant at Ole Miss. Rough first year at LA Tech, but at least tied for 1st in conference the past 3 years. .716 win percentage in 4 years as a head coach.

2. Steve Prohm. Hard to make the Big Dance when you're conference only gets 1 team in every year, but as a share of 1st in conference all 4 years as a head coach. .779 win percentage in 4 years as a head coach

3. Brad Underwood. This is kind of a dice roll. Only 2 years of head coaching experience, but 2 damn good years. That said, against the likes of Incarnate Word, Houston Baptist, Ouachita Baptist, etc. They weren't all powerhouses like this, they did beat Memphis this season, and VCU in the tourney last year. Just signed an extension that has him being paid a whopping 400k per year at SFA if I'm not mistaken. While we might not be able to pay Marshall 3.5+ million to get him to come here, I'm pretty sure we can spice things up for a guy making 400k. Also has 2 more NCAA tourney appearances and 1 more win than either Mike White or Steve Prohm. .884 win percentage in 2 years as a head coach.

Ok, what are the top 3 reasons not to hire him?

And I'm not sure he's not in the "legitimate options" category so, apart from your fiat I think you'll be seeing his name quite a bit - at least among the fan base. And yes, the fan base can be uninformed. It yet remains to be seen, however, if the fan base can approach the level of ignorance exhibited by UT administration, specifically Cheek and Hart.

The 5 million reasons is a play on his buyout; $5 million. Keep up.

New door installed for TN Basketball head coach.

I like what i read about both Prohm and White. I wonder which of those guys would do a better job of recruiting? That would be a very strong consideration for me if I were making the hire. I kind of like the fact that Prohm has been recruiting in/for the Ohio Valley as opposed to White in the deep south.

Thoughts on Dana Altman?

He took the Arkansas job for a day and returned to Creighton, only to leave for Oregon a couple years later. Arky is a better basketball job than UT and Oregon has more resources than any other program, don't see what brings him here.
