Coaching Search Summary as of 7:47pm Friday Evening

On this Easter Sunday, Tennessee's search for a new basketball coach is ongoing. As we reported in our Wednesday update, Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White was a guy that Tennessee's search party of Jon Gilbert and Dave Hart reached out to early after Cuonzo Martin's depature on Tuesday.

Sources confirmed to Volquest that Tennessee had discussions with White on Thursday and the two sides had further discussions throughout the evening on Saturday. Where or how the talks took place on Thursday is unknown. We know Hart
was in town on Thursday, at least through the daytime hours. We also know that a UT plane and a private business/donor plane were out for several hours Thursday, meaning Tennessee potentially could have sent multiple persons out to speak with potential candidates --- and almost certainly one of those trips being White.
...
One other note, there was some Saturday Twitter talk about Tennessee and Ben Howland, from the sources we spoke with as of late afternoon Saturday there had not been any contact of any kind with Tennessee and Howland.

I would guess Howland. Until about 6 minutes ago, most felt Hart was not pushing for Howland. Far fetched tweets saying he may be a possibility.

Rumors have been going for a while that Howland had said he was very interested. I don't think Marshall or Smart has said anything like that at all.

This.

BleedingTNorange- thank you for your post. I think you provide the best information on TN basketball. Keep up the good work.

its pretty simple--- $$$ equals whatever coach we want.... don't let anything else fool you. So its up to UTAD to decide whether we want to move forward or sink in quicksand. Period.

TN finishes 5th in the country in attendance with a crappy team that didn't seem to start hustling on defense til the end of the season and we can't get a top coach? TN is a sleeping giant in BB. IMO

A question on the money issue. How can UT, with its television contracts, stadium/arena size and a buyout, not afford to compensate a basketball coach in the top half of the SEC. Put another way, with our vastly superior football revenue and similarly paid football coaches, how can UK still afford to pay 3x what we can for a basketball coach?

No kidding! Why the heck haggle over 500k. Unpucker it already!

Does anyone on here ever quit griping about UT not spending enough money long enough to write a check to donate to the school? From what I see all most ever do is threaten to withdraw their mythical "support" and quit attending games. You don't have to be a billionaire to help pay the bills.

Impossible for it to happen. Bruce took the job before our season was over. Just couldn't do it. Time to move on.

The "possible intent" / interest could have easily been done by UT far before. We obviously never cracked the door. No way CBP takes AU over UT if he had his choice.

Auburn didn't blink and got it done, while Bama and UT just stood there with wood in hand. Pretty sure most everyone has moved on too.

Hart wasn't bringing Pearl back even if he had been on the market. If anything, he probably breathed a sigh of relief when he heard Pearl got a job, as it forced the BBB crowd to accept reality and drop the pipe dream.

I have a friend with good connections to AgU. He said that the Auburn peeps went to Slive and got his blessing before going after Pearl.

The way this thing looks to me. The season looked like it was headed towards a lack luster end. I don't think Hart was going to do anything this year, knowing that next year would be an absolute rock solid indicator. Hart was biding his time, never thinking that the team would muster a Sweet 16 run. And certainly not thining CCM would suddenly be a candidate on the move. So, Hart dropped the ball by being indifferent. He wasn't going to defend CCM, which in my opinon is worse than trying to oust him. There is nothing worse than people who aren't for you are against you. I'd rather know where the hell someone stands. And I think Hart was banking on giving him year 4, thinking he either impresses with a mediocre roster, or crashes and burns.
Who would guess that you would draw, Iowa, UMass, Mercer, and a team which looked lost and uninspired at times would finally click. They were a frogs hair from losing the play in game, which had they lost, I think changes everything. No one is beating down Martin's door, and Hart can sit on his contract.
Martin basically stuck it to Hart in the end. UT has no money to pay the big boys, and not enough vision to justify taking the risk in the first place. Hart wasn't committed to Martin. Didn't defend him when he was down, and now is standing there with his pants around his ankles. Hart wasn't prepared to go all in either with support, or to actually find and pay a replacement.
