Gran should be paid more! We will end up losing him.
He was unemployed. Unemployed coaches will always be cheaper than coaches currently coaching somewhere else. Also, 185K isn't exactly like UT is ripping him off. That is a solid salary for a position coach.

Why would CLT make 350k then? What makes his position more important? Are they paying him more because he's a good recruiter? From what I understand Gran was a great recruiter as well IMO anyway. If TN has better results this year someone will try to get him next year unless we pay him more.

Tennessee had to overpay to lure him away from Alabama. Tennessee didn't have to lure Gran away from anything. He needed a job.

VKB, are you at all curious how we got Gran so easily? You'd think he would've been in higher demand. Maybe I didn't follow him closely enough, but it seemed like we were the only ones initiating a courtship.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the hire, I just thought it was suspiciously easy.

Did he have other offers, besides UT?

Seems like he just hung around until it worked itself out.
I don't know what other offers he had, but I've got to imagine a guy with his track record did get at least a few other calls.

Gran is the one who initiated the courtship. This is the job he wanted. From what I have read, he wasn't going to take any other job until Lane told him he wouldn't get the job.

All I can say is, he really must have wanted to be here.

He was very patient thru the process.

I know this has nothing to do with salaries, but it's ironic that Lance Thompson has a daughter named Lane.

Tennessee Announces Football Coaches Salaries

Jan. 22, 2009

The University of Tennessee Athletics Department announced salaries for its new football staff on Thursday.

"Coach Kiffin has done a tremendous job assembling one of the best staffs in the SEC and the country," said Athletics Director Mike Hamilton. "Our funding model requires football to be successful in order to fund other sports and not detract from the University's mission. This team of experienced coaches understands that vision."

Tennessee's football coaching salary pool will be $5.325 million, which ranks fourth compared to 2008 SEC football coaching salary pools. Prior to the coaching change, Tennessee's coaching salary pool for the upcoming season would have been more than $4.7 million.

Lance Thompson Linebackers $350,000
Eddie Gran Running Backs/Special Teams $185,000

Chaney, Monte Kiffin, Orgeron and Thompson will receive three-year contracts. The other assistant coaches will receive two-year contracts.

"While our coaches' salary model is unique, we feel it is a great model for Tennessee. Coach Kiffin understands the power of putting together a great team and he used the budget we provided to assemble what many will consider to be the best staff in America," added Hamilton.

All assistant coach contracts have liquidated damage clauses that would require the coach to pay the university approximately six months of their total 2009 compensation should they leave for a position equal to or less than their current position.

All funding for the athletics department, including coaches' salaries, is from monies generated by athletics' resources and not from appropriated funding by the state of Tennessee or other university-re
