It is NOT the dream of college coaches to become major league managers. The path is completely different, and you don’t see coaches leaving big time college programs to get on that path. Period. That’s a big part of the reason it’s never happened. Just because players want to play in the majors doesn’t mean coaches want to manage there. College coaches aren’t putting their name in the hat.Yeah, White ran off Vitello right into a Major League managerial job. Damn, if he had only committed a bit more NIL money, maybe Tony would have rethought the dream of every coach/manager and becoming literally an historic figure as the first college coach to ever become a MLB manager with zero MLB experience. If Danny had just been a little nicer.

Tony was so unique, because he was a social animal and ran in very elite circles. He mingled with a lot of major leaguers.
White didn’t run Tony off, but he also didn’t stand in front of the exit. Look at what Chris Lowe said and look at Jared Dickey’s comments. There’s a lot more to this than you know. These searches don’t happen in a vacuum. There’s a lot of forks in the road before you get to being offered the job. The Giants job being a once in a lifetime opportunity and Danny White’s Devil may care response are not mutually exclusive propositions. When your AD, who is already disconnected from you, shrugs his shoulders at the news, it may factor into your decision.
We know how this is going to end. See Nick Saban. He won a NC at LSU, chased the NFL dream in Miami, flopped, then went to Alabama and became the most successful college coach ever, winning 6 NCs.I'll concede your first point, as the two jobs really are apples and oranges, but if a college coach is so inclined, as TV appears to have been, then there is little an AD could do to prevent the move.
I'll repeat an earlier point - if Vitello is using press conferences to piss and moan in any way about his UT exit and how it could have been different, I'd be very wary if I was a Giants fan or in the front office. He had better be 100% in, or that's going to be a very short tenure.
When most people say “prevent,” they are seeing the scenario in one facet. That’s Tony being offered the job. Well, a lot happened prior to being offered. For one the giants were turned down by their first candidate, Nick Hundley. You know, the dream job everyone wants? Yep, someone said, “no thanks.”I'll concede your first point, as the two jobs really are apples and oranges, but if a college coach is so inclined, as TV appears to have been, then there is little an AD could do to prevent the move.

Tony is an emotional guy if you haven’t noticed. It’s one of the reasons I don’t see him doing well in the majors. 160 plus games is a lot of time to be burning the way he burns. An AD that had a close relationship would have acknowledged the opportunity, but also would have counter pitched and pointed all these things out. Your greatest strengths; recruiting, passion….. are not going to have a place to translate in the majors. That didn’t happen and White as much admitted this in his press conference. White and Tony didn’t have a bad relationship. They just didn’t have a relationship. Tony is a relationship guy. Danny White is a transactional guy. That will serve the university in a lot of ways. It will also have its shortcomings.
