Coaching Changes Post Signing Day

Swain tweeted this a few minutes ago.....

"Brady Hoke to Tennessee has been in the making for weeks. Let's see what he can do this time"

I asked him if it was official yet. His reply....

"All these schools have been just waiting on NSD to make staff changes. It's not official yet. Canales-Scott Hire was known for weeks too"

Do you think the DL was not well coached and hiring Hoke would be an upgrade?

Comparing Sarkisian who's been a head coach and offensive coordinator for a long time to Wells?

Taking your promoting a QC to position coach as small minded stance at face value. Notwithstanding that Sarkisian is a damaged alcoholic reclamation project being thrust into that stressful position at a highly questionable time. You do know that Wells has been an OL coach AND OC? You made it sound like he may be promoting a novice kid off the street. MAYBE when Butch brought Wells in last year, he was planning ahead? :dunno:

Nah. :)

Pittman’s OL sucked this year. He had essentially an all pro college talent when he was here. They graduated and he had very good talent at UArk but still did now win the rushing title. We gained more yards they and scored more points than his teams the last two years. I don’t miss him at all.

Pittman is ranked the #2 recruiter in the SEC. Smh

I'm not sure what all has been discussed here but almost a week after NSD... do you think the door has closed on additional coaching changes? If so, what do you think that means?

Any update on the Hoke/Strip situation??

Is it a far gone conclusion that Wells replaces Mahoney? I personally hope we hire a proven guy...

If D.Craig is available I'd go get him. He's an elite recruiter and LSU WRs have been pretty good.
Azzani won't leave, no one will hire him, and butch will not fire him.

I hope CZA leaves and we hire his replacement and give Coach Canales passing game coordinator title because of his familiarity with Coach Scott.

Also promote Coach Wells to Oline coach

Almost 100% sure Mahoney is out

Does anyone know exactly when Mahoney's contract expires? All I've ever read is "February."

tick tock tick tock

edit: appears to be Feb 28, per strange bedfellows chargervol and Count on the Brady Hoke thread

Not sure about him not leaving. I think he may next year. He has been passed over for OC twice just since being at UT and apparently is disappointed in not getting the OC job. Not to mention our receivers have looked very average under CZA and not all the receivers have been happy with him as WR Coach. Was supposedly the main reason Preston left. He has a lot of talent at his disposal so if he is still here come spring there is no reason our receivers shouldn't have really good years. Really expect Jennings,B.Johnson,Calloway,Williams along with the FR WR's to have great years and careers. Just not 100% sold on CZA and think Butch could bring in a better option at WR Coach and get the most out of our receivers. Our potential at QB,RB,WR,OL and TE could have our opponents DC working lots of late nights trying to figure out how to stop us.

I hope so too.CZA has no business being WR Coach at WRU nor being the passing game coordinator. He has had some highly rated and very talented WR's since he has been at UT.TAke Malone for example. I don't think CZA even got close to tapping into J.Malone's full potential as a WR. We never got to remotely see if Preston W. Was worthy of the hype.Brandon Johnson, I believe was severely underrated out of HS and could potentially be every good or even better than his very talented Uncle Chad. Callaway has potential WR superstar written on him as well to go along with Jennings and the always consistently, inconsistent Josh Smith. Also cannot wait to see how they use Latrell William's speed to create mismatch's and Jeff George's height advantages. Very curious to see where Tyler Byrd ends up. CB wouldn't be a surprise at all though.. But really want him to stay at WR.

I will just say one thing, if you want for Byrd to stay at WR go back and look at his tale from high school.

Yea if we don't want azzani we could always bring back..... Dooley..... 😉

I would almost take anyone over CZA at this point. Our receivers deserve better coaching and should be putting up much better numvers as a group. II think our passing numbers improve regardless now that either QD or JG will be throwing to them.Dobb's did improve as a passer as his SR year went along but he is still far from being a polished QB. Hell even Cam Newton still is working on his craft as a passer. QD and JG are better pure passers and way ahead of where Dobb's was at point in his Vol career.I do think Josh also was held back from a developmental standpoint as a passer and overall QB because he never had a true QB position coach. One of many questionable decisions in the Butch area. QB Coaching is a Pretty big part of the QB's continued development. They can make or break a QB's psyche. Just look at what Cut did for Single when Fulmer rehired him as his OC. It was like night and day. Look at what Kiffin did for Crompton. Jon had looked like one of the worst QB's in Vol history. I had honestly questioned why he was so highly rated coming out of HS.T en Crompton put up numbers everyone had expected from him day 1. It's just too huge of a job to be handled by a GA or someone that had never done it much before. Then throw in the 4 scholarship QB's we have who will be battling for the starting job.A JR with zero career starts,2 RS FR QB's who have never played a down of College Football then a TR FR who has been on campus for a month or less. Think the QB Coach hire was an absolute necessity with the youth and lack of PT by the QB's. Just think it was a few years too late and should have been done year 1. Just hope Butch didn't sacrifice an elite QB Coach who could teach the young QB's everything they needed and more for familiarity. I don't know enough about Canales QB Coaching ability so I will reserve that judgement until next season and see how the QB's respond to him.

It honestly doesn't matter to me..If he can ball out at CB then I'm all for it..God knows we could use help at CB. Just the thought of Mosely lining up at CB game in and out again then constantly getting beat for big yards doesn't instill much hope for our Defense. But we do finally have a secondary coach who doesn't preach and teach don't get beat as his top teaching tool. Might be nice to finally see our secondary actually learn some technique's that would benefit everyone and maybe result in some pass breakups and some int's. Was quite obvious Martinez didn't believe in pass break ups, turnovers and teaching players proper defending techniques.

I think Strip, along with Gillespie, have been our two best position coaches since Butch got here. Hard to judge Strip last year due to injuries to DTs, though there sure appeared to be growing pains meshing with Shoop....for example, our DEs were poor at setting the edge all year, even as great as Barnett was.

I think Hoke is a very good hire to replace Strip, although I'm not sure it's an upgrade because I personally thought a lot of Strip.

Just one man's opinion.

The wells hire is concerning, did he have some role with the oline last year?

Whatever a QC is allowed to do was conducted with the OL players...that's what he do.

If you know much about football this will make since... Watch adjustments with two tightend sets especially with teams with players with smaller or less talented Safties... He will use YY wing alignment for the TE to manipulate alley defenders and watch motion
From the TE more than usual... To manipulate strength alignments within the Defense... Second he is a good QB coach... I think Butch Jones has done a good job aquiring support for new OC Larry Scott... We will see if pays him back... Which I think it would.
