Coaching Candidates

UT made a mistake hiring a guy who regionally was not a good fit for UT and UT not a good fit for him. East Tennessee is God's country, it is beautiful and a wonderful place to live, for some people, not all people. A west coast California guy with a model like wife were never going to be comfortable in Knoxville, at least compared to a good west coast job.

Your next coach probably should not be Gruden, who did California with the Raiders and then down on the cost of Florida at Tampa. You need a guy who is at home in East Tennessee, as well as a good football coach. A number of coaches would come and take the money and the job because it is a good job. But, some would love the job and the area, and others who would take it would be susceptible to do exactly what Lane did, when a job in an area suitable to their personality and lifestyle opens up.

As a Gator fan, I hope your AD throws a bunch of money at another coach who will be tempted by the money and prestige of the job, but is not suitable to the area.

I think you have some good points. But not totally about Gruden. He has been quoted many times stating how much he and his family love the Smokey Mountains, which is why they bought a huge chunk of land there next to his wife's parents. I know he did Cali and FL too, but he does have some love for the Mtns..... I know Jon Gruden is a pipe dream but I honestly think Mike Hamilton is going to have to take a bunch of money out and start waving it if we're going to come out of this situation at least decently.

I AM MAD!!!! I HATE KIFFIN!!!

My top choices are:

1. Will Muschamp
2. Cutt.
3. Terry Bowden...don't laugh....great coach and TONS of ties to the SE.
4. Rick Stockstill........Don't laugh again. Man has played under Bobby Bowden, and coached at S. Car and Clemson. He has done a great job at MTSU. He would have been MY 1st choice for FSU.

This is a hard time for any UT fan. Not that we lost our coach...but the timing of it. Recruits will leave for other schools....we need to rally around the new coach and understand that UT is bigger than any one man!

makes me wish CPF was still here....he could have gone 7-6 with this team.

CPF couldn't have went 7-6 with this team because he wouldn't have pulled in the recruits we did last year. I liked CPF but it was time he moved on. He had hardly any draw whatsoever to top recruits and getting them on campus the last few years.

It would definitely be interesting to hire Terry Bowden...he had a decent stint at Auburn . But, I don't know if I would want a coach that has had question marks as a recruiter...

You are letting your football desires affect your judgment on Gruden just a bit. Having a vacation home in the mountains and loving to go there does not mean that is where a person would love to live for 10 - 12 years in the prime of their lives. People have vacation homes in Cancun and love the water and weather, but would not necessarily be committed to living there, if an offer to do something in an area which is more their natural habitat so to speak.

If Gruden came to UT this fall and a year from now the L.A. Jaguars, fresh off a move from Jacksonville are looking for a new coach, with your own John Henderson coming off Pro-Bowl year and a number of player pieces in place...how well would you sleep at night if Gruden was your coach?

Versus, if say Cutcliff or a Muschamp or another long time college guy, who did most of their coaching in the south in small college towns was your head coach? I think VOL nation would not be holding their breath wondering if it would have to hire its 3rd coach in 4 years.

If you get a head coach who thinks they have ties to the planet xenon your probably in trouble.(BSU) Personally i'd like to see a man like Paul Johnson at knoxville.

Peterson would be absolutely a home run but he and patterson have signed huge contract extensions. I doubt we could get them but it's always possible with $$$$$. Muschamp would be an awesome hire IMO but we all have to rally and pray Hamilton doesn't bring Cutcliffe back. CMON!!!!!!!!!

What about Skip Holtz from East Carolina? The guy has had good success there and has pulled off multiple big time wins for that program, not to mention they should have beat Arkansas, but their kicker went 1-5 on FG's and their QB gave up two big scores on ints

right now ESPN is saying that Fulmer has been contacted about AD or HC. Not sure which. If they hire him for HC, we're doomed. IT's not like you can bring him back to smooth the situation then send him on his way. If you bring him back, he will be here until he retires.....

I agree that it was time for CPF to move on. But.....name 1...just 1 freshman that made a HUGE difference in this past yrs. team.????? Jackson...ok..maybe.....but he did not "WIN" a game for UT. Did Brown, Oku, Richardson, ect..make a difference at UT? Not as frosh.....Oku and Brown, and Jackson will be good down the road...but NO big difference this year!

CPF could have won 6-7 games with this team.....

Since football's a team sport there's no reason to name just one freshman that would make or break the team. I couldn't see CPF turning Crompton around like Kiffin and staff did either. His problem was he was settling in to a year in year out .500 team because he couldn't pull in any recruits or at least develop the talent that he did have.

Rick Stockstill and Tony Franklin would look good at UT!

IF Will Muschamp turns down the job...which I think he will.

My short list would be in no particular order.
Edsall
Calhoun
Petterson
Patterson

That said, I don't have a problem with Muschamp or Gruden or Cowher. But no to Leach.

Gruden has property in east Tennessee and his wife went to UT? Post in your teams own forums

This year against Georgia. Crompton 20/27 for 310yds 4TDs 1 int. If that didn't win the game for us then I'm Bama's biggest fan. Ok I'm through arguing about this good day.:hi:
