Coaching candidates

Do you think it also has something to do with the types of guards Martin recruits?
Long athletic guys that are a step slow as opposed to the smaller quicker guys who could get around the edges and into the spaces where they ain't?
Seems we're always settling for the 3s.

He just doesn't know how to coach offense and outside of pushing the pace or fast break, the pg position, which is the most important position, is a role player. He doesn't want or let his pgs play ball and basically asks them to dribble over, pass it to the wing, and stand still as the ball goes to the block. There hasn't been a clearout pick and roll with Stokes and a pg yet this year. They try it, but have a wing guy right there which screws up the spacing and allows for easy help d. Really basic stuff that I can't believe the coaches don't have a clue.
Team is still made to run. Pgs should be flying up the court, getting a pick or two and dishing to open wing shooters or a big man. That's how pgs want to play. CM won't allow it

We need a coach which has the ability to motivate the players and make the most of the talent he has available. Having followed UT sports beginning in the late sixties. I have seen many different coaches come and go. In my personal opinion the most engaging coaches we have had during the last forty years is Phil Fulmer,Bruce Pearl and Butch Jones. I feel Bruce was given his walking paper by the administration with little respect for what he was able to achieve during his tenure. His program was not in decline when he was dismissed. He loved The University of Tennessee and he demonstrated this every day. A tribe, employees, fans and players typical take on the character of their leader or coach. When you have an capable, confident, enthusiastic, highly motivated, energetic, articulate coach you do not through him under the bus. The players and fans loved the enthusiasm and positive energy he constantly projected. Yes he made one mistake. He has accepted the punishment dealt by the NCAA and UT which was extremely harsh for the infraction. UT and coach Pearl basically accepted the NCAA punishment to avoid more severe sanction being placed on the university. As I stated above I have followed Tennessee Sports for over forty years and I have never seen UT play better basketball than when Bruce Pearl was the coach. I am a graduate of the University of Tennessee and have always take pride in the University of Tennessee and education I received. Without reservation I would rehire Coach Pearl should the opportunity arise.

:whistling:

I like CCM but he's not getting it done with a bunch of good ball players...disappointing to say the least. If he can't win he can't stay.

Finally, you guys on here are all extremely overrating the talent on your roster. Maymon was a hoss before injury, but it doesnt look like he's 100%. Stokes is overrated and at times, looks like he doesnt care a thing in world about being on a court. McCrae is solid. UTs main problem is you still have no PG. Memphis fans told you that AB wasnt the answer. He's a great kid, solid role player, but he transferred for a reason. Most of the guys Martin has brought in werent 4 and 5 star kids. Its going to show up in time.

I don't think most are overrating our talent. All most would expect out if this team is to have beaten UTEP and Xavier so far.

There is enough talent to be a 1/2 loss team right now.

Did you happen to catch Washpun playing for N Iowa yesterday?
Amazing how he blossomed when he got out of this system. Driving and dishing , beating bigger guys to the rim. Fun to watch.

:rock:We hire Steve Pearl as head coach. He immediately hires his Dad as top Assistant they split the 3 million total payment for a head coach and Assistant. The fans are happy and so is Steve and Bruce.

Nah..Alan and Wade Houston would be a better combo!

This thread is worthless without the mention of Dane Bradshaw taking over this program!!

Totally agree---Bruce beat Kansas with a short bench and less talent than what CCM has currently. I know this ain't football but this season seems to be starting off eerily like last. Even if we get hot like we did last year and real off a win streak---this loss is a bad one on the résumé.

Funny that last year we beat Wichita St and still didn't make the tournament

I was glad to see Wes playing well and having fun. I also noticed he had several blocks and was setting good picks that were opening up some of the back cuts UNI was running.

Another point guard that impressed me in that game was the freshman backup, JeQuan Lewis for VCU. He was quick, had a good handle, played decent D, and had a good shot. In 17 minutes he had 13 points, 2 assists, 0 turnovers, and 3 rebounds. He was 4 for 7 on 2s - 57%, 3 for 4 on 3s - 75%, and 2 for 2 on free throws - 100%. Why am I bringing all this up about JeQuan Lewis you might be asking? Because JeQuan Lewis is from Dickson, Tennessee. For those that don't know where Dickson is, it's about 30 miles west of Nashville. According to Scout, Mr. Lewis didn't even receive an offer from Tennessee, he must not be a Martin kind of guy.

Washpun has 35 assists ytd. That's @ the same amount as DT and Barton combined.
I guess we will assume the kid who can't shoot (0-9 from 3) and was told he would never see the court is now a better pg than DT and Barton combined?

Nope. It's coaching. 100%

Basketball will be on the backburner until football can refill the AD coffers. At least that's how I see it. It sucks, because I love basketball more than football. I just don't see us taking on another buyout with the financial status of the AD right now.

I would agree with this...however football and basketball to me are on the same level....BUT....we don't have the money or intestinal fortitude to replace a mens basketball coach at this point in time...I wished like crazy CCM could be wildly successful and I agree this is the most talent we have seen in years....Maybe he'll turn it around and we'll win big games in conference and play like we should with this talent..losing to WSU on the road is not a bad loss.....BUT...and I dislike people posting this negativity usually...BUT...I just don't have much confidence in CCM to get it done....and that's a shame because HE DEFINITLEY IS THE TYPE OF MAN YOU WANT REPRESENTING YOUR PROGRAM...

Love these threads

And my vote is for (of course...not my first time saying it)

Lawrence Frank!!!!! Was my choice before Martin and I was sooo excited when I heard we contacted him. I guess he's part responsible for Martin. I really hope he gets a call and an actual offer. I'd be the happiest basketball fan ever

And it would probably be easier getting Cal or Bill Self before Marshall. That guy ain't going no where

Before getting a new coach in bball, UT needs to get rid of Jimmy "Booger" Cheek first. He's a liability to UT and a gutless, spineless weasel.

What we really need in here is to quit all the "Hire Bruce Pearl" threads or the "Fire Martin" threads and start the "Fire Booger" threads.
