Coaches that turned it around in year 4?

Please read this! Why do I feel like I'm the only one who hears this? Why isn't youth a reasonable explanation? I don't like losing either but c'mon man. One more coaching change before an entire class graduates will mean another decade or MORE in bad shape. The grass isn't always greener . . .

Correct. The last thing UT needs is another coaching change.

Barry Alvarez

Wisconsin Badgers (Big Ten Conference) (1990–2005)
1990 Wisconsin 1–10 0–8 10th
1991 Wisconsin 5–6 2–6 T–8th
1992 Wisconsin 5–6 3–5 T–6th
1993 Wisconsin 10–1–1 6–1–1 T–1st W Rose 5

Damn they should have fired him after the 1992 season

The bottom line is some will support Butch Jones and some won't, the biggest issue you have is a coach that is a self promoter, yes he promotes the team but it all comes down to his fancy cliches, the VOL nation keeps compairing and saying we are close, take a look at most all the teams players and I think you see much the same allot of youth, when you get down to it other teams have coaches that adjust and Butch in company just keep doing the same old thing, it works for two quarters why change? Right? Well that's why you can't get over the hump, no match adjustments to use our superior players, according to Butch and company, not so sure your superior players are all that, the recs are not physical, route running poor, QB play, really he is a Rec playing QB, Hurd, Berry, kamara, are the best option to move the ball, put Berry on offense get the ball in his hands, stop talking about how young we are, the players do have ears, enough talk gives them a good excuse. It's really simple STOP selling the BS and get some substance on this team, stop talking about how they will mature and expect them to play now, they will get better but stop giving them a cruch.

He had 9 wins in year 2

True, but went 6-7 in year 3. Then had 11+ wins in 4 of the next 5 seasons and has lived to tell about it. I know this doesn't help your point but you asked. I'm by no means on the Butch Jones wagon but I'm just going to let this season play out before I grab the pitchforks. It's disgusting that were 2-3 but we could still have a good season yet, although I doubt it.

Not even close to suggesting moral victories. But the progress from where Vols were just a couple years ago vs. now is unquestionable.

Were you there at Oregon when we lost 59-14, and it wasn't really that close? I was. How about the 55-23 home loss to Auburn that same year? Were you there with me? Did you leave early? Do you remember Vol Calls that evening?

Three losses this year. By total of 11. I was at two of them. OK & FL. And I live in Denver. The progress then to now astounding.

You want to know bad football? My wife is a Baylor grad. Attended a LOT of bad football before Art Briles showed up.

So relax, people. The future of Vols football is bright.

How were the fans in the swamp? I went in 2005 and got treated pretty rough.

Like it or not Butch is UT's coach as long as Dave Hart is the AD.

I'm one of the few that are ok with this. Although, I think 2 -3 assistant coaches should be replaced. Im not worried simply because the recruiting job Butch is doing. I've followed recruiting for over 10 years. Recruiting classes haven't been consistently this good since the late 90s. As of now, the 2017 and 2018 recruiting classes will be top 10. No reason to start over with another coach.

Keep hoping.

Butch has botched call after call in big games. Butch has beaten nobodies and sprinkled in one great win. These are facts. He's not getting better on the field. He's getting worse now that people see he's a fold artist.

Be careful what you wish for. I'm seen this athletic department fire Fulmer and hire Kiffin and Dooley. Fire Pearl and hire Martin and Tyndall. Fire Delmonico and hire Raliegh.

No one has ever had to follow Dooley... I'm disappointed but I think Butch has earned 4 years with his recruiting and what he has done with the roster. I understand wins need to start happening and I'm all for playing to win as opposed to playing not to lose which is how I feel like we have played late in two of our three loses.

I agree, starting over isn't the answer. Changing a few assistants may help, but Butch is so prideful and stubborn, I don't see it happening unless it's his idea.

I think by the time these freshmen and sophomores are juniors and seniors we will have something. Hang on.

Something positive and negative.
Coaching did seem to change from OK to UF. Many mistakes in both but I saw attempts (going on 4th down etc) that gave me encouragement that they were willing to fix things.
It's not good that coaching style is being ironed out now but it's still better than never.

Arky actually concerned me more because the coaching, while not great, also was no worse than most teams.
We have a lot of talent but even with halfway decent calls, the team seemed to not have the deep desire to finish in that 1 game.
Maybe a fluke.

Were any of these coaches that have turned it around in 4 years making a little over $3 million a year while turning it around?

My understanding is that Majors had other issues... AND that UT had a rising young star that was going to get a HC gig at UT or somewhere else... named Phillip Fulmer.

The game had passed Fulmer by. No one since has fixed it but he's the one who drove the program into a ditch. He had some great years... but over his last 4 seasons he managed to create a huge mess that was NOT getting better. He was not recruiting well. Many of his prize recruits were busts.

Before you have a spasm... just go and look at his OL and DL signees for the last 3 years he was at UT. It was as bad or worse than what Dooley did as far as producing contributors.

Well if ole Phil was SO BAD and you wanted him gone so bad look how great we've been since you fired him He was UT thru & thru and right now I'd welcome him and his 8 win seasons back

Are you being serious or no?
Given some of the dates for the examples, over 3 mil would have made Sabans pay look like chump change.
Coaches didn't receive these outrageous amounts until recently.
We have a $7 million 'school' coach in the sec. Unbelievable.

Unfortunately, UTs upperclassmen the last 2 years have not been great players. Only a few "really good" ones... all on defense too.

The younger players the last few years under Butch have been the best players. How many upperclassmen this year or last year would you categorize as really good/great players? AJ and Maggit last year? Sutton and JRM this year? Randolph and McNeil (guys I.love) are average.

The OL upperclassmen simply arent good, save maybe Marcus Jackson who isn't even playing. The only guy with honors last year was the FRESHMAN.

No coach who comes into the SEC from the outside fully understands the passion and expectations that go along with coaching at a school like UT, UA, FLA, etc. Butch pretty much got a free pass the first 2 years because of recruiting and the energy and buzz he created. I think he is now staring reality in the face and realizes that the fickle finger of fate is pointing at him. He better "get it". I think he will, because I really think he loves UT.

Surely kelly and berry are better and if so should be starting
