I'm not pleased with the defensive performance this year but to me, talk of getting rid of Heupel is crazy. We were a bottom feeder in this conference for a dozen years before he got there. He has made us respectable. I'd have taken 5-2 after 7 in a heartbeat the day Nico went back to California. Let's not kid ourselves, Nico developing into an elite QB was Plan A. That's been derailed by the greed of those around him. Joey has acquitted himself admirably, but he is a bandaid. Most all of us were saying we were an 8-4 type team when Nico left and that's most likely where we are headed. Probably not our year to return to the playoffs, so we need to keep recruiting, developing, and put on more steam.

Banks has to go, and Martinez. Both are inept. Some want to blame the kids for this. Who is responsible for having these kids here. Are we missing on what a sec football player is, are we not able to coach them into a quality player. Either way it’s on the coaches. This defense is horrible. No excuse after 5 years. Change has to be made

Other fanbases get angry with their head coaches and they all of a sudden go on a run (Day last year and DeBoer with his little regular season winning streak). We should demand more and start getting a little bit more angry.

Agreed. Bama's first series summed up our defensive problems to a T. I believe it was 3rd and about 12 from inside their own 10 yard line. We're fixing to force a 3 and out on their opening drive. UT got decent pressure. But their qb stepped to the side and threw an 8 yard pass to a TE standing about 5 yards short of the first down. Normally, that would be an acceptable play by the defense on third and 12. Problem is he was so wide open that he just turned and ran for the first down before he got touched. Our dbs are bad but our linebackers are just as bad in coverage.

Not sure why people are upset. Vols are strong program, but nobody confuses them with the blue bloods. I think fringe playoff team is about the ceiling.

Banks and Martinez are always hot or cold. 50/50. A coaching staff should take heat for an occasional blown call or scheme, not rile an entire fan base with terrible full games half the season.

Heupel should fire one or both.

I think the more intelligent VOL will allow the HC to determine if the problems are coaching or execution and handle his own staffing decisions. Lots of moving parts you cannot properly analyze from the stands or couch.

Lots of answers will be defined by our portal targets.
