Coaches Poll Released; UT Remains Unranked

Polls have and always will be silly. Who really believes Troy, Western Mich, Utah, etc would beat TN or almost any other SEC team.

Maybe I misunderstood your 1st sentence:

"It matters because, among other reasons, they play football games to win and be ranked with the goal being #1."

My bad.

No worries.

It does matter because the players fans, school administration, etc cares where they are ranked. Higher ranking drives media attention, fan attention, high school player attention (recruiting),box office sales, t-shirt sales, etc.

I disagree based on last season's performance and what we had coming back. Last year 2 of our 4 losses were to playoff teams where we had a late 4th quarter lead. It definitely wasn't all hype. We would be ranked (and would deserve to be) if we had just taken care of business at SC.

In the wake of last night's events. That loss to South Carolina was the worst to our program since December 2001. Absolutely inexcusable. That's not me banging on Butch because every coach has an inexcusable loss. Even Nick Saban.

For the sake of argument, let's imagine that we move up to # 22 in the polls. Then in the SECCG we beat Auburn/Alabama. That moves us up to maybe #17, Does this have us in the Play offs?
How do we get to the ultimate goal, to be #1 when we already have 3 losses?

Bama clinched. Auburn is not in the equation any longer.

Bama has already wrapped up the West with Auburn's loss yesterday...and there's no way on earth UT gets in the playoff with a win over Bama.

Not if you're ranked in the 20's when you were expected to contend for the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather UT be ranked than not ranked but UT is still a 3 loss team.

Good question. With being #1 obviously off the table they still play for the best they can now achieve given the situation. From the players standpoint they still have a conference championship on the line.

From the coaches and administration standpoint it's far easier to recruit and sell t-shirts & tickets being ranked 20th at the end of the season than ending unranked next to Vanderbilt and Kentucky.

From the fans standpoint by golly it just makes me feel better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm disappointed with you since I really thought we would compete for a playoff spot this year. However, I do think it matters to finish strong and end up ranked......see my other posts.

Think maybe a more balanced schedule would have helped us some this year, and maybe not as many injuries? We were on a 4 week adrenalin rush, then...meh...let's win out. Didn't happen so easily. If we can hold serve with talent next year, and stay healthy, think the more balanced schedule, and having a meaningful game late, will help us if we win against LSU...though seems we've drawn the short straw again w/ LSU and Bama (side note...do we always have to catch THE "hot" team in SEC W rotational game?) Even if we win out on normal years w/ our weak back end, we just don't get the press coverage...unless we lose.

Sad part is, if we had taken care of business against SC, we would be a borderline top 10 team right now, control our destiny for the east, sec champ, and pretty much a playoff spot.

Yep
The South Carolina loss is going to haunt Jones for a while. No excuse for it and paying dearly for it now.

Considering what we've put on the field the past two weeks, do we beat USC jr, if the "player who shall not be named" isn't on the team, creating drama and bad team mojo? I think it would have been a KY type of a game...defense is flawed, but offense seems to have found some identity.

Virginia Tech has twice the votes we do with losses to us, Syracuse and Georgia Tech. Some voters just don't do their homework.

North Carolina being ranked is an embarrassment to this poll. They have 3 losses and all to unranked teams.

There are several embarrassments in that ranking. Most have to do with promoting some old time regional favorites for one win over a "decent" team - Penn St and USC, for example. Not much different from when the polls pumped or pimped TX way up when they beat ND early on.

Ah, but I can guarantee you that there are plenty of people who will tell you they "deserve" to be ranked because they don't have a loss or they have just one loss - without any regard to the strength of the conference or teams they've played.

Probably has a lot to do with participation trophies and failing to understand the real world - and that polls are completely screwed up to begin with - no measures - just vote on your beliefs.
