And an everlasting legacy that will surpass Delmonico.
For all he accomplished, Rod was so frustrating. Might have been my perspective, but he always seemed to excel during a contract season. In between, it was...no pun intended...hit or miss. OTOH, when viewed along side our other coaches since Rod, he's the Vince Lombardi of baseball. Coach Vitello has me thinking we've hired the Steve Spurrier of college baseball. Kind of a mad scientist/genius who is going to play with swagger and rub your nose in it every chance he gets. He's going to live in some programs minds like UF currently lives in ours in football. I pray to the baseball gods that Vitello retires here, but heaven help the admin that lets him slip away. I shudder at the thought of how our fans would react. And an everlasting legacy that will surpass Delmonico.
Great analogy. Tn football fans allow Kiffin to live rent free in their minds. Tony V has that Spurrier swagger and will beat teams badly when he can, like Spurrier. TV has brought an attitude I hope rubs off on the football team too.For all he accomplished, Rod was so frustrating. I’ll start with the caveat that anything can happen, but it feels like this past offseason was the best chance we had at losing Vitello. Jobs like LSU were open, and we still hadn’t committed to the kind of stadium improvements we desperately need.I pray to the baseball gods that Vitello retires here, but heaven help the admin that lets him slip away. Ding, ding, ding. He’s going to need to win a national title first before we should even entertain the word “dynasty.” Let’s just enjoy what we’re watching right now.
To be fair, according to LSU, Vitello wasn’t one of their top 3 choices.I’ll start with the caveat that anything can happen, but it feels like this past offseason was the best chance we had at losing Vitello. Right now, Vitello has the team performing at a truly historic clip, they’re getting attention from every corner of the country, and he knows the administration is going to spend $60 million on the stadium. And even though we won the East last year, we still lost series to Vandy and Arkansas—felt a bit like the established SEC pecking order would be tough to shift. The team is proving now that they’re perfectly capable of being the conference bully.
So he’s got the talent, the exposure, the (still unfolding) results, full support from the administration in terms of his salary and their commitment to facility upgrades, and all of these things will work in tandem to make the program more and more attractive for top recruits. I also think he’s sincere about loyalty since Tennessee is the school that gave him his first shot at being a head coach.
So yeah, the future is hard to predict, but I feel like Vitello’s roots here have strengthened exponentially even since last year. He’s building his own program at a school that loves and supports him in the nation’s best baseball conference.

This past weekend, Guilbeau reported that Woodward was considering exploring Tennessee’s Tony Vitello and Tim Corbin as candidates. Vitello told reporters he had no contact with LSU.
Well that’s what Oklahoma, Notre dame, Oregon, thought in football. Let’s not get over our skis.I'm not worried about losing Vitello this off-season. Obviously, this season is shaping up to be potentially historic. His agent will get a call from every single opening. But, last season was the time to be nervous. He's now one of the highest paid coaches in all of CBB and we just pledged $60 million for renovations to LNS. Plus, he'll have the brand new Smokies Stadium for some top tier mid-week or non-conference games.
I can't see him leaving what he has now built. He's here until he decides he is done coaching.
