Coach Pruitt and this team

This is just my honest opinion on things. Coach Pruitt is a no nonsense coach and person. He is honest in his assessment of this team and the players. He is a perfectionist. You can tell that by watching him look at game film. He is always looking for ways to improve. Many of you think he doesn't want to be here. I don't believe that. He is starting to understand what it means to be a Vol. To give an example, he stopped the players on the Vol walk and tried to get them to see the honor they were given. He did this in an attempt to get them to live up to the former tradition. It worked on some but not all. Some think his lack of excitement at interviews and on his show are signs his heart isn't in it. I don't believe that. What I see is a Coach the wants perfection and he is disgusted with many of the players effort. He gives his all trying to win and can't relate to a player with no heart. Some of the players not having heart is part his fault. It goes back to his being honest about some of the players on this team. I can't fault him for being honest. In my opinion a few of the players did not respond like Pruitt expected. If he had made a statement that I was to slow, small and weak I would have done EVERYTHING in my power to change his opinion of my ability. Some chose to give up. A coach can teach technique and improve skill but they can't give heart to a quitter. I have read quotes from players that some of them didn't want to go to a nothing bowl in Nashville or Memphis so they quit. That is what I think happened in the last two games. All it takes is a couple of players on each side of the ball to affect the out come of a game. Just run a step or two behind they guy you are covering and the QB has a career game. We all saw that the last two games. A teammate doesn't try to pressure the QB and QB looks like a pro. An O lineman just moves out of the way and our QB gets drilled or there is no hole for the running back. All the coaching and play calling in the world will not fix these actions. The quitters need to be gone. No coach in the world can give a player pride and heart. There is no motivational speech that can do that either. I feel for Pruitt and the players that gave their all. I for one will not bad mouth the staff until the cancer on this team has been replaced. I honestly think it will take a couple of more years for us to be competing for the East but for now I will go with Pruitt. GO VOLS GO!

I strongly disagree. Last 2 games of the tear spoke volumes. Even Butch's teams didnt quit until year 4. He is not head coach material.

Good coaches do the best they can with what they have. All these guys had a heart when the signed with UT. He couldn't figure out how to pull it out of them for whatever reason. My guess is his public criticism of players didn't work out to well. Again, it should be expected that Pruitt would struggle in this area as its something he has never had to deal with. Only the future will tell if he figures it out.

Guess Saban didn’t do the best he could with what he had his first year at Alabama......

You stating that good coaches do the best with what they can. You can only do so much.

It was obvious almost all of our players on defense from the previous regime were slower then the guys they played against and that the D Line had no push.
So again ill ask who said anything about not giving him another year?

I suppose, I should state that maybe you are being harsh on a guy who was handed a team that had just went 0-8 in SEC play. (Because they were awful)

You did not state you weren’t giving him another year. My fault.

Not comparing him to Saban. Comparing him to the situation of taking over a team and having to implement his ways.

Always takes more then a year.

If you're expecting Pruitt to lead this program to Saban like success I'm fairly confident you're going to be more disappointed in 4 years than I was at the coaching hire. And I was pretty dang disapppinted.

But I must ask; if you aeent comparing him to Saban why bring him up?

I dont know if im a fan of stopping the vol walk and preaching to the players. It seems like he is trying to gather fan support for himself because for whatever reason, he cant get the players up for a game.
He seems like a good coach, hopefully he figures out how to be a head coach.
So it's your contention that grown men need to be motivated to play for pride and their team mates....every week? At what point does it become the players responsibility? I understand that CJP is the head coach, and it all falls on him, but the players have played a part in all of this.

Because Saban is viewed as the best coach in college football. Yet even he has had his fair share of ups and downs.

No one is safe from it. It happens. Even to great coaches. Pruitt needs time to get his guys in and instill his view for the program and players.

I agree. I also agree that Pruitt roasting the lineup mid-season may have helped recruiting and hurt this season. IMO he didn't care because he is more set on flipping this roster than salvaging it. That could cut both ways but it is his bed to lie in.

I feel the same way I did about that situation as I did about Butch blaming losses on injuries. They may be valid observations, and not all of it may be in your control, but as a coach you only get credit for fixing leaks not pointing them out.

Then reporters should stop asking questions and fans should stop watching press conferences.
We act like we want to know but really just want something to cry and bitch about

The issue isn't answers it's results. No one cares what you say after a win. That was my only point. Sound responses stop having any weight if you keep losing.

Look at the Titans last night. They are essentially out of the playoff race despite Mariotta having one of his best games statistically. Plenty you could say about that but how many fans care when you have essentially wiped out your post season chances?

This is why Coaches don’t like the press or their conference. The press and fans really don’t want to hear what the coach has to say. They just want ammunition for their bitchfest

I'm not really sure what the debate is. Coaches are hired to coach not interview. Fans don't pay to see interviews they pay to watch good football.

If your point is there is nothing a coach can say to satisfy people when they aren't winning then I'd agree. There are things a coach can say that can hurt their efforts, but there are also things they can say that build a team and fanbase up. In Pruitt's case I think his message was more for future players than current ones. Signing day is approaching and we'll see if it worked. A good class is another way a coach can win for the future. If he pulls in a great class count me as a convert of the end justifying the means.

Going to save this post...
Please do. If I end up being wrong I’ll own up to it. But I would like to know who on this team you think will be drafted this year? I hope we have a bunch of guys drafted. I want them all to do well and have long NFL careers.

Okay, yeah lots of people did. He even said nothing will change until he recruits players. Not a good public statement to make, along with how he dealt with the grad transfers. Perhaps he turns it around in year two, but not a good start for sure. The bad part about this situation is he will get hammered for all his "growing pains" while he is learning because expectations are so high here. Hope he starts winning quickly.
He did say nothing would change until he recruits players. Looks like he was correct. I am sure some of the players improved and he has changed his mind about them. But there are some that didn't. I don't think they will be here come Spring. At least I hope they aren't.
