Butch Jones left the Vols football program in horrible shape. He had no linemen essentially above 300 pounds and absolutely no speed. Jones refused to keep Sam Pittman, the best offensive line coach in the nation too. Pruitt addressed that quickly and is still in pursuit of improvement. When a football program was in as bad a shape as what Jones left, you do not restore it in a couple of years either. Essentially, it will take 5 to 7 years to get the Vols competitive again. Be patient, support Coach Pruitt and give him the time to do so. Look at Kentucky as an example, Stoops came to Kentucky in 2013 in a horrible program. Year by year he has improved the program...this is 7 years into the process. Give him three more years and he is going to be very competitive in the SEC. The same will happen to Pruitt if we stay behind him and give him our support. Pruitt did not throw two intersections and a fumble that resulted in 17 Kentucky quick points....blame that on QB JG. Some are demanding a coaching change...this would only worsen the situation. Stay the course, support Pruitt and we will get back competitive again...that comes when we can end up beating or being competitive with Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Am I to understand this is now a 7 year rebuild? That's a large number, even for the most devoted Sunshine Pumper.

Interesting. I guess I need to reassess my expectations.

I remember after the hire being told by multiple Pruitt supporters that we would be competing again by year 3.

Oops.

The team quitting is on Pruitt. The lack of an SEC QB is on Pruitt. Lack of a QB will be hard to overcome this year and this is year three of his tenure. At some point he may develop into a good or even great head coach, he isn’t one now.

When are we going to stop blaming Butch for Pruitt’s struggles? This is Year 3 now. He’s had time to develop a winning culture and get most of his players to buy into his system.

For a team that is supposedly on the right track, getting embarrassed by an average team at home by UK is the new standard. You can’t sit there and tell me we didn’t have the talent to compete with Kentucky? That’s a coaching issue with Pruitt, can’t make up anymore excuses.

When are we going to stop accepting mediocrity?

I love how it’s always “Coach didn’t throw interceptions, Coach didn’t miss tackles”. What exactly do we hold a coach accountable for?

Losing to GA State?

Blowing a lead to BYU?

Getting blown out at home to Kentucky?

Losing to our biggest rivals (GA, FL, AL) by no less than 2 touch downs every time we’ve played them?

Having 4 QBs on roster (that are still labeled as QBs) and none of them being ready to play? (3 have been here for 3 years).

Wanting to play power football and recruiting 2 top power RBs and moving them to LB only for them to be mediocre at best at the position?

Have a 5* stuffed O-line that get pushed around by the scraps that Kentucky has picked up (and developed)?

I have posted this before, but once again...
At a luncheon the first year of Majors' return, I ask him "coach how long will it take to get the program where you want it"?
He said 6-7 years. Mainly due to the restriction on number of players. It takes quite awhile to change the culture of a program that has taken several years to get in the shape we are in. SO - - TIME, TIME,TIME!!!!

Perhaps this is the new normal and we need to stop thinking we can compete for championships. We will have the occasional 9 win season, but that's about it. We are squarely on the same level as South Carolina and Kentucky. Good teams with occasional upsets, but nothing more. Mid tier.

This isn't the first time in his tenure we've seen teams quit on him. Not developing a QB, or nabbing a talented grad transfer is inexcusable in year 3. It was a problem when he arrived, and apparently has not been addressed. That could be termed malfeasance.

We've seen nothing but his track record as a DC and association with Saban to suggest he really has what it takes to be an elite HC.

I guess we'll find out for sure though, 'cause he ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

I hope like he// CJP learned a huge lesson from the beatdown Saturday. He could/should have learned last year, but didn't, that no matter how good your D or OL is, in this league if you don't have at least a servicable QB you are going to struggle and end up giving away games you shouldn't, much less compete with the big dogs

Imo we should have started the beginning of last year with someone replacing jg. If we had of done that, I think we would be in good shape now. Maurer or Shrout either one would be doing very good with that much experience. It will take several games for any new qb to be good, even Peyton Manning had a learning curve. Mistakes will be made, but I don't think near as many mistakes as we have seen from Jg. It is past time to move on from Jg.

Good thing for you and Coach Majors that Pruitt will likely get it...because he's not going anywhere. Doesn't mean I have to like it or agree with it.

By the way, that assertion is absurd in the face of other programs turning around in 2-3 years in this modern era. Nobody is expecting a National Championship...but not losing to Georgia State, BYU, and Kentucky in embarrassing fashion should not be too much to ask.

Or as we are seeing across the country "the same as many coaches coming into really down programs" I refer you to an above post about the KY program... I don't remember how many seasons it to Dabo, to rebuild Clemson, but it took a few and they weren't all the way down like us and others.. It also helps when you are rebuilding in a situation the your main completion is struggling or on the way up from a down time.
