Coach Osovet

On highway 321 outside of Maryville, just before the entrance to the Foothills Parkway, and last stop before you get to the quiet side of the Smokies featuring Townsend, and if you don't take the left to stay on 321 there, the entrance to the park and Cades Cove. Oh yeah, just under 12 miles from my house. Oddly enough if any kids on my street were of HS age they would be zoned there, even though Alcoa, Maryville, and even South Doyle in Knox County are actually closer, Alcoa nearly twice as close.

10 miles from the airport.

You may be from near my stomping grounds growing up; off Martin Mill.

This is true. I graduated from there in 94. My freshman year we won like the first 3 games, didn’t win a single other game until after i graduated.

Class of '96 here, or would have been had we not moved before my junior year. I was a pround Porter Panther.

Talk shows are saying Osovet’s wife (and apparently he himself) loves east Tennessee and he made the decision based on her wishes.
That is a divorceable offense if his wife is the reason he is coaching at heritage.

Kinda tough to have a good team when all the athletes move into the city limits to play for the red team.

From my experience more folks do what they can or have to do to get their kids in Maryville or Alcoa for the academic more than the athletic experience. Even those with athletic aspirations knowing the odds are what they are prioritize getting ready for the next step. Weird zoning and city borders also incentivize some to pay tuition for real practical purposes. We did with our grandkids starting in K or 1st grade because Heritage where they were zoned was so inconvenient for those living near the Airport between Alcoa City limits and Knox county line. If you are not going to the mountains it is not on the way to anything, but it makes sense since it has to serve the county residents all the way to the park. Tough to make two schools serve a big ole county. If you want to see a strange site, google map Alcoa and then Maryville and check it out. Outlying chunks everywhere.

Very detailed reply, thank you. Lol. There’s a HHS close to me as well in Ringgold,GA, and I was wondering why Osovet would’ve taken a job down here, so I knew there was probably another one closer to K-town, I just didn’t know where. Thank you sir.

Well I wish my response was worthy, but it is not. In fact it is embarrassing that I must admit I reversed the two county HS. EVERYTHING I posted is TRUE for Heritage HS NOT WB. I have no excuse for I go to that WB campus every year to buy plants from their big sale.

So to accurately tell you where WB is I will tell you it is between the same 321 highway and US 411 on a road not so oddly named William Blount, only away from the mountains toward Lenoir City or Madisonville respectively.

Sorry for the misleading info. Getting old is the pits.

it would seem that Heritage could use the same excuse, but i don't hear them whining

It is definitely an issue though, not trying to whine about it. I played at Heritage Middle with plenty of guys that ended up in a Rebel uniform. I don't blame them one bit, and one of those guys in particular caught a free ride to MTSU. The coaches at the time did not pay attention to the feeder programs to keep the truly talented kids interested in playing for them. Danny Wilson was the last coach that gave them any resemblance of hope, and I remember him coming out to watch the youth league teams in Walland practice/play on a regular basis.

Pappy is probably a riot at parties. I actually think it’s harder to keep athletes at Heriatge than WB for a lot of the previously mentioned reasons.
