He is a kid and kid's don't understand things properly at times. I am sure like many other kids playing ball he thinks he should be starting. He probably still thinks he should have started last season too. It's hard to realize you didn't play good enough to beat out a QB that also loses games. I'm sure his family/friends have all blamed the coaches too for him not starting. It would be human nature for a parent to do that. I would be on the coaching staff to put my son in if I was NS's dad right now. I want him in for some snaps and I don't even know the kid.

Now I am sure this thread makes you Cromponites sooooo happy! I will always say his play is horrific. He can't win a meaningful game. I don't think he takes responsibility for his bad play. He is a loser on the field and there would be NO risk taken if you swapped to a back up QB just to see what happens on game day. The season will probably be shot soon one way or another. 5 years from now our record will show losses. Nobody will remember if it was a loss by 2 or 32 pts. It was a loss! The only risk I see for the coaches is if NS actually somehow played fairly well in the game. This would make many people ask them why they waited so long to try him. He didn't play well last year but this isn't last year. Different staff, different scheme and the boy has one more year under his belt. I laugh my butt off every time I read someone say if you take JC out you lose what offensive timing we have. Please, show me timing with that offense.

But, NS has given up. He either knows he sucks or he assumes he will never get on the field. All the bickering about him getting into a game is wasted typing.

Sorry, but there is a reason you do NOT start NS.

First you have to EARN a right to play. Like him or not Comp has put the time in learning the system, and NS has NOT.

Second What kind of message does it send to the other players? If a QB does not try to know the system, and does not put much time at all in getting better, but he gets to start??

ALSO some of you people can not see what message our coach is sending to the QBs in the next Recruiting class, and that message is I will stand behind you even if things are not going well as long as you are trying your best.

Right now you got HS QBs looking at UT and saying that coach has the QB's back, and I can play early without worrying about the coach dumping on me if I struggle.

I would not give you a dime for a coach that flip plops on QBs. The TEAM needs to know who the leader is.

Like it or not it is NOT about this year. It is about the long hall.

I played high school football. There's a difference between thinking you should be starting, and thinking there is no point in giving 100% because you're not going to get an opportunity to play. You're oversimplifying. Some players on the bench actually have a legitimate reason to believe they should play more.

Yeah, other than the fact that he is one injury away from being the starting QB. Or, since we are on the assumption train, do we assume Nick thinks Coach Kiffin will decide to play only 10 players on offense and operate without a QB if Crompton gets hurt?

Come on, Favre didn't go from 3rd string QB to Probowl player in one season. Glanville had in his mind to play Chris Miller and that was that. I say the Falcons just didn't know how to evaluate talent. Favre can miss most of training camp at age 40 and still have a better season than any one season Chris Miller or Billie Joe Tolliver had.
Yes, he did. The trade to Green Bay was a wake up call. Favre couldn't hardly get sober enough to make it to the games when he played here. The Falcons knew he had talent, but he just didn't have time to worry about playing QB.

I have one question. How does Matthews know exactly what's going on and why are people on here taking his word for the absolute truth? Unless he is at all the meetings and practices, I would say he is just speculating like everyone else.

If you notice on the sidelines Stephens is just standing around like a fan watching the game. The best Qbs are the ones that when they are waiting their turn are glued to the play caller's hip listening to the plays or signaling them in so that they can play the game mentally. Stephens just stands around with arms folded. Another example of lack of effort and why he has not become the starter.

Former Vandy RB and was on the UT staff as RB coach and I think DC when Majors fired Ken Donahue
If he were on my staff and said something like that...he would have his walking papers. Info like this is only a cancer and should not be said. I therefore do not believe this horse crap.

That's not the way a player prepares if they believe they will be the starter Saturday. For whatever reason, he doesn't believe he is going to get that opportunity so he doesn't work particularly hard at practice. :twocents:

If this story is true, I think NS is handling the situation in the wrong way. I assume the coaches are mentoring NS, telling them what they need to see from him to get him in the ballgame.

Of course, one of the best ways to motivate a player would be to put him in a ballgame, especially when the starter is in one of his "zones". Putting NS in for a few series against UCLA would have answered the lingering questions once and for all.

I was going to ask how close the source was to the team these days.

I know NS isn't going to morph into Peyton or even AJ Suggs, but there is no way that I don't have a QB option waiting to relieve JC when he comes unglued as he did against UCLA and Auburn. I think I try a new QB just to spark something extra against Florida. We are in no position to have "one QB." We only have 1/2 a QB on the field and on the bench, so you need them both.

Regardless, this team should never be throwing more than 20 times a game. Run, Hardesty, Run!

Coach Matthews said the staff expects Stephens to leave the program after this season and they can care less. He also said the staff is indeed going after a JUCO QB and he put his doubts in as it is risky as it usually does not workout in the end.

I don't know if it came from Hubbs (it might have) but he said that Lane and probably Chaney are going to fly out to Calif to evaluate Matt Simms.

I speculate he is probably talking to one of the VQ guys for inside info.

NS must be an idiot if this is true. He could easily get the starting nod if he works hard in practice. Crompton has not performed at all. Maybe he doesn't practice hard because he feels CLJ will not play him no matter what and he just doesn't care anymore.

care to explain? It looks to me like he got better as the game went on.......how did he exactly become "unglued?"

Matthews has a 2 hour Saturday morning SEC radio show, he's very tight with Fulmer, Tony Barnhart, and many other coaches. He usually knows what he's talking about.

Coach Matthews is still in the know about UT football despite Fulmer leaving. He does go to practice and talk to the coaches. He has said that he wouldn't be surprised if Stephens leaves after the season. It has been mentioned on Coach Matthews radio shows that they are recruiting a JUCO QB and Simms is the one they like more than Newton.

To quote you "he (Crompton) can't win a meaningful game". I'd say today was meaningful, wouldn't you? I don't understand how some people can forgive NS for giving up, yet those same people have been quick to constatntly ridicule JC, who continues to give it his all.

And if NS isn't going to try, I'd jut as soon he leave and find a place in can play, like BJC
