Coach Mathews show should be interesting this morning.

Everyone needs to listen to the last 15 min of his show. A lot of things he said and used as comparisons line up with what some have been saying... (Beaver)

The scripts are already written but he won’t discuss what he already knows. At least for a few more weeks.

Nebraska wanting to conform to a more academic type program. “ whatever that is” Along with bad hires has made that school irrelevant. When 20 years ago it was a powerhouse. If we don’t change we are headed in the same path.

Sounds like UT’s top research school goal. As if you can’t do one with out the other.

He is a moron. Both academics and sports can work.

Not really i read last year that the 3 programs with the lowest academic requirements were GA ALA MISS. That may have changed but if not you can see who is number 1 and 2. I think there could be a happy balance somewhere there though

may have lower requirements but that doesn't mean they don't have higher academically ranked institutions. Ala has flourished since saban took over. They both can work together in harmony. The academics at ala have grown from the football money

Lowest academic requirements for players, or for all applicants?

Plus, there are requirements, and then there is what it takes in terms of grades and scores to get accepted.

Pretty sure that I've seen references to an improved overall academic profile for Bama once Saban came on. Success attracts successful people.

Athletics and academics can absolutely go together but.... the people who control either side typically do not mix well together. That is my understanding of what is going on here. There were people who wanted CBJ, those people have not gone away. Deals were made, those deals have not gone away. One side is threatening to take their ball and go home and the others are saying "bye, we already have deals that have been in play for 5 years and more to come". This whole mess has little to do with football. Its more about business deals and power. JMHO of coarse....

I believe we are on par with Nebraska..once proud football programs
This is a totally fair post and a very very very sad day if it continues this way. To which I have yet to see anything concrete taking place that makes things different with the football program. Lots of wacky conspiracy theories, loons/soons, and apathy so far. God help this program if they foist a Bobo or his type on us.

I don’t get this “we WILL be Nebraska...” we already ARE Nebraska.

We haven’t been a national contender since 2001... same as them. Neither has won a conference title or major Bowl game either.

It’s bad folks.

While absolutely true, the problem comes when the administration leans way too far one way or the other. I personally tend to think our current academically leaning admin looks down at leaning on our football program being the defining characteristic of our school. We are a state college, not a private school, and great sports bring in revenues and attract students based off of that success. Again, I think it can go too far either way, but when they look for ways to take athletics away as the major draw to the school, when that's our traditional pull, I think it leads to a downward trend in all aspects.

... and the idea we're going to get an NFL retread that hasn't coached in ten + years come in and save this collegiate program is magic wand, tooth fairy, and unicorn territory IMO. How did that the Big Tuna/Bill Parcells HOF coach returning to the NY Jets work out for them??? Super Bowl wins, amirite???? GTFOH with that BS.

I think Gruden is far from a sure thing anyway. He's a name, would get players, not sure about the rest.

I agree with Both but I do believe with JG we have hope and I believe the hype will help Tennessee kinda like Lane Kiffin one year.. this place would go nuts

This simply about power and face of the university. I don’t see 100,000 people sitting in Neyland waiting to to register for biology classes. Take away the money athletics has contributed to the university over the years and see what wouldn’t be on campus. If it makes them feel better we could always have desk placed on the field at halftime so the team could study.

I know this may be an unpopular view, but personally, as long as they are going to class, trying and staying out of trouble, I don't have a problem with cutting athletes slack on admissions and GPA requirements.. They put their bodies on the line and bring in revenue which benefits the whole school. Call it xtra compensation, call it whatever you like..

Yeah the Jets aren't a college team.

We are in waaaay better shape than Nebraska. They are a dinosaur with no talent anywhere near them. We just need a big time coach and we'LL be fine.

You're EXACTLY right. Select right coach, we're back. We've made it hard, but it's really simple.

Do you know that probably greater than 50% of us wouldn't be admitted to UT due to academics?

This is a l land grant university, where education of its citizens should be its primary goal. Unfortunately we want to become a top research university and if you look at academic rankings Tennessee is failing at that also.

This starts at the top. The university has had piss poor leadership too down for 20 years. That's created an environment of chancellors, directors and senior staff to run amuck with their agendas.

So yeah a football coach may help us win a couple more games every year, however the university will continue to struggle with its identity and direction until there's a complete leadership overhaul.

The raised academic standards were something Fulmer complained about. The article i read stated that our academic standards were on par with Vanderbilt and our football team plays like Vanderbilt now .

UT is nothing without football. It was true 100 years ago and its true now. Football is the ticket to a stonger academic culture. Entertainment drives this country, the sooner UT figures out how to market football full potential the sooner we climb to the top.

Yea it was interesting him saying this.. he will talk bout it when it happens and break it all down, sounds like something is already in place (who knows) but it gets my hopes up for the big time hire..

Swain has been more upbeat and eluding to something good about to happen. Wish some good info would get out!

Does anyone think they would spend $340 million on this if they didn't think the future of this program was a chief, if not the most important, priority?

Or do you think they re planning on 20 years of 7-5ish football?

He actually just dumped on how decisions are made in the athletic department. Said that if decisions keep getting made by one individual instead of collaboratively then we are the next Nebraska.

Personally, I really don’t see a big difference between us and Nebraska at this point.
