Coach Jumper: Prediction: Diamond WILL be a Jumper again

It has been a battle of wills, this year, Holly had to prove to Diamond this is her team, and Diamond had to prove to Holly this is my team too, for me and my coach it was fine as long as the players came ready to play.

We generally lost when we didn't follow the coaches directions, so we came to a true, we played the way we wanted to play (turnover limit), but we had to play to scanner report defense and offense, we both agreed upon an acceptable level of play, now we can hold each other accountable.

Holly been ridin em, but she had to they had to get better now. So, Holly knows she has to get the best out these player, and its delicate balance, especially when your losing, when you pushing and riding em and the results are still the same, losses, it gets dicey you don't want to crush em, Reynolds and Carter, then you really become average.

Its all about keeping em happy, and making em feel like they are good players, they belong there, and it don't take an alpha coach to do that, like alpha coaches and players don't lose.

So, the coach don't have to be a alpha, they just have to be a perfectionist, we play this way, we defend this way, we attack on offense this way, go out and play this way, if we decide to play.

If this team just pressed or picked up defended opposing guards 94 feet from the basket, we would be a better team, but our lady want push tempo, we don't press, we are not playing to our strength...

Word... is the ladies push tempo in practice but its not translating over to the court, the transition to the court, when the players have control has been the problem.

Excellent point about "alphas".... Some players are motivated by just a few words. Others need a strong hand/voice in their ear. DD appears to be the latter. HW played Robin to Batman for so many years and like you said CoachJ, she wasn't ready to take over Gotham when Batman left.

It's easy to say spoiled, privileged, bad attitude, etc. but she is not the only one on this team that is not feeling this staff. Others are not in the spotlight like she is being filmed, photographed and interview all of the time.

Diamond has put herself in half of her dilemmas and been subject to the other half (Passes that should have been caught and were missed or dropped,, passes to open shooters who double clutched and pass back to DD with under 7 seconds (had to shoot),, schemes that got so late in the shot-clock that a shot had to be taken.

Dd is the real deal and one program can win with... if they can coach her

Agree that you can win with her. But she is still raw and needs that "alpha" coach that can coach her. This year will be a learning process for her I believe but she needs that "alpha" voice to get in her ear and take that raw talent and mold it kinda of like Geno has done with Stewie...

I've been on teams, where it was us the players that won the championships, the coach just was there, especially if you have an alpha, coaches just control the flow of the game.

I guess those drills, and 7 a.m work out, but we played the game, cos we loved it, and we all hated to lose, once you have that, all across the board and a player don't allow loafing, not getting back on defense, get beat off the dribble, accountability is low, so performance is low, accountability to themselves and their coaches, and their family and the fans.

The games tells the whole story, our gurls are going through the motions, and most are mental midgets, but they're young.

Every Championship team I played on, the players led the charge. ijs.

It is the Coach's job to become obsolete. If you ARE coaching DURING a game, you didn't coach enough away from the game.

I know if I have done a good job coaching, the same way that I know if I am doing a good job at work... Coaching, like management, is getting the job done through your charges... If you have to go do the job with them, then neither they nor you, are proficient yet.

I have one question, Who recruited the current players that appear to be not very talented and play very poorly? I see no development/improvement all year, from the players or coaches. Shouldn't the coaches be expected to improve as much as the players? I haven't seen any improvement from this staff the last 4 years. Instead, things have regressed.

Its not the recruit's fault here... Just because your team has the best composition doesn't mean you're going to win with it. It takes a master coordinator and the sayer of the right words to coordinate upper level skill (Remember Phil Jackson?)... A lesser skilled group would be trying harder because they have to, to win. . . The whole will most often beat the sum of the parts... It is the coach who can take the elite "sum of the parts" players and make them into a super team... it is also the coach who fails if this doesn't happen. Because if you re-look at the sum of the parts, it is is still the same.

The GOB's have already seen to this V4L

that won't happen. I have seen her AAU coach pull her to the side and without demeaning her in view, let her have both barrels. she responded with a 14 point quarter out of pure hatred and anger. This is not to say she went out and beat up anyone, she funneled that talking to into a "controlled rage".. She was all business and she was focused. That is the element that an athlete has to have to hit 110%. They have to be able to do 10% more than ANY ONE who knows them, would thought them capable of. (I detest the overuse of this phrase)

Diamond was taught to play with controlled-aggression. But she has little ability to control her emotions. When they get out of place, only one she "respects" can put her back on track. And THAT is what this team needs right now. Not a disciplinarian, a role model! An Alpha. Like Pat Summit.

She HAS to have a coach who can see her emotions taking charge over her and coach those emotions.

Only a few of us can do this thing....thus, the term, elite.

you may allude to this being part of the maturing process, but not all great athletes mature. just as not all people do. At least, on the same time-frame. (Edited)

For those of you who say this bulletin board isn't read by any of the UT staff... explain this for me:

I posted the above and spoke of the need for an Alpha influence for our alpha players on the 25th of Feb pasted below:
02-25-2016 at 4:58 PM

Diamond, Graves and Cooper all need the very same thing. An Alpha to influence them.

It's not necessarily for the coaching aspect. Holly, Dean, Kyra, and Jollette all know how to teach and run teams. The missing ingredient is that influence that can pick these girls up and slam them back down when they need it.

Its quite like the Mom/Dad thing with a daughter. Daughter gets upset. Mom tries to calm her down and just incites her more, Dad steps in a says, "Calm down, shut up,,, now, whats going on kiddo..." and the world magically lifts off of her.

this could be a gender reversal as well. Mom could be the alpha... But until that child get in front of someone who can bring her back to earth... she will stay frazzled.

++++++++++++

In the newspaper sports page, right at the top today, that exact date is mentioned as the day Jollette talked to DD and and her game turned around.

Nope, the staff doesn't read this forum. coincidence... Has to be.

If holly returns, Diamond willjump. i know this family and have known of them since Diamond was 11 years old. Delino, Dee, Diamond and I,,, all know what this child is capable of... What is missing is the thing she has had in every environment except college... SHE has to have a strong hand leading her. Holly is not an alpha-female

You can't let Diamond's emotions rule her and you can't sit her and let her recompose herself. She will only sit and fester...She has to be shaken back to earth with force, wisdom and a very alpha-hand.

this program is in trouble. . . Only a step-down from HW will end it. The U isn't going to fire or force her to leave. No way... This sacrifice and gesture has to com from Holly. . . Do the right thing HW

I don't think Holly will maintain a top 10 program at UT. I think expectations should be made clear when a coach is hired. At the same time, a player with a bad attitude is just that. If she needs to leave its better for everyone involved. I would say the same if Pat was still the coach, of course if Pat was the coach Diamond would have been gone in week 2.

If Pat was here, it would be a moot point. Pat would have stood toe-to-toe with DD and controlled her emotions from the gitgo// Hatcher didn't. Holly Didn't... Jollette finally stepped up....DD would in no way have ever been allowed to stay in a funk that long. I don't know why it took Jollette or the staff so long to have the talk. But I do feel something prompted it because the timing is just too perfect...

Understand something "IPlead" ,,, These girls are this way from day one. Not all of the girls, just the ones that are deemed elite from the gitgo. Also, only the ones that you have to coach like you would a male....

DD and Coop aren't like Russell and Dunbar. (look at the obvious femininity of these two as they run and play in a game, then look for the same whimsical movement from DD and Coop... See a difference?)... You "ask" Russell and Dunbar for more effort, but you "demand" more effort from DD and Coop... You don't tell Russell or Dunbar to "Calm it down and get your head back in the game", yet you have to tell athletes like Coop and DD this sometimes several times a game.

They're Alphas. Even though Russell can play just as hard and give just as lofty numbers, you HAVE to coach them very differently to get the output

The real secret to this team being where it is, Holly allowing the guards to play their own game, especially Diamond. Also they team is playing a game fitted to its personnel. As long as Holly can abstain from playing her outdated offense, and stick to the offense they have played lately, I give the Lady Vols a chance. The ladies seem more responsive.

Read this article and you will see an upbeat team playing with a chip on their shoulders and I love the Lady Vol's playing with a chip on their shoulders: espn.go.com/women's-basketball/story/_/I'd/15031143/Tennessee-lady-vols-turnaround

So you think this season and more importantly, these last two game are all Holly's patient coaching. . . . I've been in a minority too. Its tough, but stand your ground soldier. There might be more of you.. ;o)

If they are reading this, CJ, they are searching for needles in haystacks. They need to be watching more film and getting a clue instead of listening to anybody on here.

But in the off chance they are reading - keep running. It fits the roster. No more high low post stuff. You have no dependable shooters outside and the opponents just pack into the paint and use zones. Mercedes is not tough enough yet and Graves is too small inside and too timid to take the baseline J. Press the ball all over the court. Trap and have Mercedes defend the rim. Bring the guards in low for steals. Run, run, run. Have Diamond thinking score with her own shot and with assists. Should be looking to score 70+ every game the rest of the way. Don't overthink it.

No I do not believe it has any thing to do with Holly's patience. If that was the case we would be still playing the dribble, dribble, throw it inside and create turnovers. We would also be back in Knoxville counting uniforms. I think that the decision to play within the talents of your personal is a change of offensive ideology that has made a difference. I am going to give Holly credit for that. My problem is, will she get a wild hair up her rear and decide to go back to an awful offense that has not worked all season. Holly is an idiot if she does not realize that Diamond, not Russell, is the key to beating Ohio State. If Russell decides to play, like she did in the first half last game, and Graves just shoot the 10 to 15 footers, this team might be hard to beat. Better guard play would also be a bonus. The key is how Holly decides to coach. She has the blueprint but will she follow it, stay tuned.

DSM-5 criteria for narcissistic personality disorder include these features:

Having an exaggerated sense of self-importance
Expecting to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
Exaggerating your achievements and talents
Being preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
Believing that you are superior and can only be understood by or associate with equally special people
Requiring constant admiration
Having a sense of entitlement
Expecting special favors and unquestioning compliance with your expectations
Taking advantage of others to get what you want
Having an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
Being envious of others and believing others envy you
Behaving in an arrogant or haughty manner
Although some features of narcissistic personality disorder may seem like having confidence, it's not the same. Narcissistic personality disorder crosses the border of healthy confidence into thinking so highly of yourself that you put yourself on a pedestal and value yourself more than you value others.

Jumper, admit it, you are a negitive nancy, and need testosterone treatment, you basketball knowledge is front runner, poo poo anyone facing adversity. HOLLY, has embarrassed you, and your kind, so has this team. Even if they fail, somewhere forward, Pat did numerous times, you failed. She has succeeded, and she recruited all these ladies,

it is an Elite 8 team right now

that means there is only 7 other teams hanging with the Lady Vols :hi:
