Coach Jones on CBSSports

Everyone is frustrated. It just seems that in the past 4 years we are first at finishing second with big time recruits. I for one will not judge Butch on this class. Next year I think we have a better haul. More time for butch and co. to form relationships with kids and improve our play on the field. We will be a improved team this coming year...we have to be....right..

He's right about that. Did a great job flipping a number of 2-3* guys. Just about what you'd expect from Cincinnati on NSD....not a storied program in the SEC, like Tennessee. OleMiss is pulling in a Top 10 class, even after going 6-6 regular season. What a leap. Kiffin took over after a bad situation, too and pulled in a Top 10 class.

They got a few gems to stay on board, who were close to committing before Dooley got fired, but beyond that, this staff hasn't done anything to move this program forward in the ultra-competitive SEC.

Auburn had their worst season in a long, long time, fired their coach and brought in a guy who has only yr HC'ing experience.....hired a MAJOR recruiter, in Garner (thought we had the best staff in America?)...and we get dusted by them, on the recruiting front.

Funny you should mention Ole Miss. When Freeze was in this same position last year, he pulled the #40 ranked class.

It is very hard not to be dissapointed....I would love to know why people feel Auburn recruited better than us? I am glad and excited about who we got but this is just another let down year on NSD. Last time I got excited was Bryce Brown and Janzen Jackson, check that DaRick Rogers. Glad those 3 panned out!!! I like Butch Jones and it is obviously much easier to get on board compared to a proven loser like Dooley, but I would absolutely LOVE to get excited about Tennessee football again!! GO VOLS

Kiffin's "Top 10" class was the biggest bust in recruiting history. Ole Miss's class may end up the same.

The Auburn NC a couple of years ago is being overplayed. Bottom line, they are in the same situation as us. Worse year than us last year, with a new coaching staff. Yet, they are smoking us in recruiting. We are just getting beat in every aspect of CFB at this point in history. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Yeah, just look at all those big names Kiffin pulled in on short notice - Brown, JJ, Nu'Keese... All Vol legends. Am I right?

EXACTLY.....

I'm ok with getting a few less kids and not having the crazy attrition...But being the bridesmaid with every top target is getting old!!

I am disappointed that UT did not land some of the big fish CBJ was chasing. I understand that there are mitigating circumstances but it is disappointing nonetheless. However, I think it is important to give CBJ the opportunity for a full recruiting cycle and to demonstrate his coaching abilities (aside - I think coaching ability is the most important characteristic for a staff. Great recruiting will not be sustained if a team shows it can't meet expectations, while great coaching helps to exceed expectations).

One thing I don't understand on VolNation though is why an expression of disappointment is taken so hard by so many on here. Do you expect us to regard every outcome as favourable even if our analysis says it's not? All the so called "Negavols" are saying is that they hoped for more and that they are concerned that UT continues to lose ground in recruiting to other members of a hypercompetitive conference. Reacting like members of the KGB against those who dare to challenge the regime is no more reasonable than the opinions that infuriate you so much.

Auburn did better.

Auburn had a SOLID class that all they had to do was maintain, and they brought back a coach who just so happened to be the o coordinator from their national championship team just two years removed. Tell me exactly how OUR situation compares to that one?

I count 21 and think we end up around 20th. We would probably be 15 or under if we signed 6 more 3* to get our 27. Bell and Levenberry the big dissappointments to me but I'm thankful for those who signed. I'm ready for spring practice and O/W game. ROCKY TOP!

Brought back a coach who just happened to be the brains behind that operation. IMO

The Ole Miss argument is dumb. Other than Tunsil, their top guys have connections to OM. It sucks to close this badly, but what I can I do about it? Nothing.

I was very happy with this staff's effort, and I was taught a long time ago that if you work hard, good things will happen.
