It looks like we've been consistently moving in the right direction on the field with Butch (not including APR, Recruiting, etc.). The Shoop hire may turn out to be just what we need to get our defense the rest of the way to a championship level and it's been said that defense is often the more important in winning championships.

See, this is were reality and fantasy meet, this is the SEC, ANYTHING can happen, UT has just as good a chance of going undefeated as they are to lose 2-4 games.......you just don't know until its played on the field, and there are the unknowns.....injuries......remember those? they plagued many a team last year, including UT......WRs......remember those? Off field issues........remember those? If you want to keep you head in the sand and believe what you want, but this will be the best team UT has fielded in a long time, optimism is HIGH, but don't forget what league we play in.......anything can happen. I guess if Alabama, Florida, GA, aTm have critical injuries, and we win those games, everyone will crown CBJ a genius....but the cards and dice of this game are hard to play.:peace2:

Great post and what I was basically saying earlier in the thread. As many things that can go right they're just as many things that can go wrong.

Let's be honest. There will be tons calling for his head if we lose all four of Florida, Alabama, Texas AM, and UGA. That would be completely unacceptable.

I agree that there would be cause for concern. That doesn't make the Fire Butch scenario anymore plausible though. There's always a lunatic fringe that nobody is listening to.

Seeing those figures are very interesting. Especially the defensive rankings for UF. It should quell some of the people who think ol butter teeth walked into some kind of bare cupboard with no talent anywhere.

I am very excited about the Shoop hire. You are correct in that he may very well be the missing piece of the puzzle to make UT a true NC contending team. Hopefully he lives up to expectations.

Just out of curiosity, but you see no scenario where losses to those 4 teams right? Absolutely NO scenario?

This guy wrote some other mind numbingly stupid article a week or two ago... don't remember what it was about and don't care to, but it left me shaking my head. My bets are on him being a butthurt Vandy fan, upset that 2012-13 didn't become the norm like he'd tricked himself into thinking it would.

Who cares about the talent level he has brought in if they can't win. He is being paid close to $5,000,000 a year to win games over our rivals. Tom Herman will be paid around that when he leaves Houston and he is the hottest name in coaching right now. If Butch doesn't surpass 9 wins with this schedule and returning talent then the question needs to be asked "why are we paying so much for so little?"

Good frickin' grief, we have yet to execute one play of the season and the above starts already. The alternative is we find a guy that will coach for <$100,000.00?

They would have to lose 8 or more for there to be any chance of Jones being fired, and even then it probably wouldn't happen, but 7 or less wins may put him on the hot seat next year.

If the General were coaching in today's world there would be people that would not be happy with him...

Exactly,,, some people are gonna gripe and complain no matter what. I just don't get it,life is too short to be unhappy all the time. Whenever Butch leaves(either for a new job or being eventually fired)some people will start complaining over the new coach whoever it will be before he coaches the first game.

BS. I'll be disappointed and I, along with 95% of rational fans will critique the hell out of him. But there's no way in hell I'd call for him to fired. No. Way.

Butch may not be fired but someone will...

I mean, haven't we learned our lesson? Look at what the quick-twitch firing of Coach Fulmer got us. Much more patience should have been shown there considering what he had done for Tennessee football up to that point. Given another year or two, there is a good chance he would have made the big splash hires he needed to make to get things back on track.

I wounder what would have happened if Fulmer had canned Clawson halfway through the season, and hired a young Lane Kiffin as OC, taking a chance on the guy who'd just been fired by the Raiders (or was close to it). He might be on his way to Bobby Bowden territory in terms of years coached. Guess we'll never know that.

If we go 9-4 with another home loss to UF with the team which is this experienced and loaded with talent it's hard to see how Butch (or any coach) would not be on hot seat after that. However this will not happen unless we have some key injuries early in the season. If we stay healthy SEC east title should be a lock.

I read this stupid piece. Nothing more than lazy journalism. Good grief we could come up with a scenario where Saban could get canned .......

Goes 0-12
Caught with multiple male hookers
Arrested for moving kilos of coke

About as likely as some of the scenarios in that lazy piece of journalism.

Yeah but a 9-4 record and losses to those teams might get a moving van parked in front of his house. Jus sayin...

SEC East Champions or #epicfail -- at a minimum.

It would start some grumbling and uneasiness going forward, BUT it wouldn't come close to getting him fired. And rightly so. Given the past 10 seasons, the administration will have patience with Butch. And so should we.

The gist is that a 9-4 showing, with the Vols losing to Florida, Alabama and Georgia, would put Coach Jones on the hot seat, and a 7-5 or 6-6 showing would be enough to get him fired right away.

But, imo, the only conceivable thing that could get Coach Jones fired this year is a losing record. But if we are talking about him being on the hot seat for a 9-4, or 8-5 showing, sorry, but that's just ridiculous.

Besides, as Mr. Calhoun points out, anybody can see the quality of the athletes CBJ has put on the field for us since he was hired. And I actually agree that it is now up to him to make use of that talent by proving he can be a great motivator, strategist and field general and giving the players the best chance of getting us some championships -- something that didn't happen last year, though the talent seemed to be there.

But let's say the team does under-perform this year, and even the next. We still need to be patient to see if CBJ is willing to learn from that and to do what it takes to improve in those on-field areas, or whether he will let his ego rule and try to pass the blame on down the line like our last coach did. I believe he is the type of guy who is able to do the former if that happens, and barring a complete break down (5-7, 6-6 type records over the next two years) we need to be patient and give him at least three more years if championships are not immediately forthcoming.

But what am I saying? I think we are going to win big, so this is all probably a pointless discussion :dance2:

It is little wonder why since Gen. Neyland walked away competing for and winning championships went from being habit to a rarity; First, you have a group of fans who run about bragging on how great the year and the players are going to be, and when things go south, they bang their heads against walls.

Then you have the doom and gloomers who want to discuss coach firing scenarios. They bring up names of coach from the past, or the coaches we should have gotten. Always with the negative waves.

Nobody seems to be the fan that players might never want to let down anymore. No wonder so many players nowadays are eager to declare for the draft early, even if they have to take a UFA deal.
