Facing a 21-3 deficit, Tennessee ran out the clock entering halftime instead of trying to score more points. The fans voiced their displeasure with boos.

"I know there was a lot of people that didn't want me here at halftime. I get that. That's part of the job. Love is conditional," Jones said on Monday during a news conference...

..."And then at the end of the game, everything flips. And that is why I think you have to keep things in perspective and you just have to keep grinding each and every day," Jones said. "But this is my home, this is my community and you know I love everyone here. What more can you say. You want to coach at a place that is passionate and loves their institution and loves their football team and there is no better place than Tennessee."

Vols coach Butch Jones: "I know there was a lot of people that didn't want me here at halftime."

Believe it or not, but it's a good thing for him to be self-aware. Shows that he understands the expectations for a school like UT. This fanbase is insanely passionate and thirsty for a winning program - competitive with the very top teams year in, year out.

This fanbase will spend/donate big $$ in order to pay these coaches handsomely - with that, there is a fair amount of pressure to produce. Butch is a likable guy and has certainly improved our program tremendously, I hope he is able to capitalize on his efforts and enjoy many fruitful seasons here.

If he can get us back to being a double digit winning program (excluding bowl season), then he's gonna retire here. I believe you're right, Saturday was a wake up call for Jones with the boos.

At least he acknowledges it and does hide or run from it.

I think it helps that he won the game. You didn't buy his coach speak before the game about Florida being just the "next opponent on our schedule," did you? I guarantee he wouldn't be this candid if we had lost and he's suddenly on the hot seat.

That being said, I'm very happy for Butch that he got the win and validated his stewardship of this program. We might not be steamrolling every opponent yet like Alabama or Ohio State, but it can't be denied that we're make significant progress every year and our team is full of talented, high-character kids.

This is going to be a special season, but winning that game guarantees that he's going to be around for many more special seasons to come. It's the 1990s all over again...

I actually like what he said. He is thinking things through and understands he's not in Cincinnati any more.

Yep he's right I didn't want him here before we even made it too halftime. Luckily I don't get too make those types of decisions. Sorry coach Jones thanks for understanding.

i've grown tired of the coach speak.

but, he does it for a reason. and he does it for the same reason Nick Saban lashes out at Kiffin and then at hte press conference lashes out at the play calling etc...

just two different ways of doing it. one is very entertaining and polarizing for the media...the other is boring and doesn't win you any Mr. congeniality awards.

but the bottom line is this...if he comes out before that game and talks up all the importance of the game, and acknowledges it, publically, then he's all but made it a referendum on his career, and the status of the TN football program.

what he did, maybe less successfully than Saban, is he insulated the team from the pressure. by not acknowledging anything, it allowed the media and fans to continue the conversation about the Butch Jones narrative, not the team.

this is a little different than Saban, in that Saban did it after throttling WKU, prepping for Ole Miss.

Florida week at TN...well, you're in a fishbowl....there's really no where to hide and no way to completely insulate.

No I didn't ive been critical of him all season my posts are proof of that. I didn't really like the way he answered the question knowing its the biggest game on the schedule and the reason you coach at Tennessee.

Its really says a lot to the message he sends every week to the team and the message we the fans keep getting. They are resilient to the core and know they should be in and win every game. As tired as we are of hearing about it hes right. They have literally flipped the way they play from last season and I couldn't be more happy.

He's right. He handled it like he belongs here. That's fine by me. I asked for results and he provided them. That's good enough for me.

Do I think he's a championship coach? No. But I have enjoyed being wrong once this year already. I'd love to be wrong again.

He's doing what he was hired to do, albeit a year later than he should. I'm glad he beat Florida and look forward to the rest of the season.

It's not just Tennessee that is demanding results. It's every big time school.

That was very well said. It was also very professional and sincere and real, which is something I think we rarely hear from Jones. It increased my respect for him.

CBJ may big the biggest conman alive. But I believe it when he says he wants to be here and he loves our program. Maybe that makes me a gullible fool.

I hope he is here winning for decades with high character guys.

If that happened, that guy needed to be escorted from the stadium. Sorry but I feel that type of activity and the booing the team one supports are classless moves by fans IMO.

I thought Coach Jones handled the comment very nicely all things considered.

Let's make no mistake about it. Salaries and facilities aren't built by season ticket holders and casual game attendees. They are built by mega TV deals, mega donors, and bowl victories.

Our fanbase is borderline self destructive in its "all or nothing attitude". We lost to Florida 11 years in a row because we bled money on buyouts, bled talent throw attrition and coaching changes, and we were the worst AD in the country on the brink of being broke and slapped with NCAA academic probations.

Butch serves a steady and consistent glass of reality and gradual improvement. It's not flash in the pan but it's tangible and wholesome. It's making our program healthy. I hope he is here a long time. Because with certainty comes the ability for mega donors and mega brands to invest in a certain brand that will not tarnish or waste their money.

It definitely happened. It was pitiful. I was 30 rows up but saw it.
