Robert Gillespie: Tennessee Vols football 'hit it out of the park' with 2017 running back class

A snippet ......

Everyone knows Tennessee got one really good 2017 running back prospect in U.S. Army All-American Ty Chandler from Nashville.

Running backs coach Robert Gillespie thinks the Vols got three really good running prospects.

Gillespie said he’s just as excited about the futures of three-star running backs Trey Coleman and Timothy Jordan as he is about Chandler.

Running back was a clear area of need in Tennessee’s 2017 class after the early departures of juniors Alvin Kamara and Jalen Hurd, and Gillespie said the Vols “hit it out of the park” in that area.

Ya see, this is the damn problem with this program and staff! Wow, 2 three star recruits....woopty doo! You call that a HR?? lol No, getting Cam Akers along with Chandler would have "hit it out of the park". Again, this program accepts mediocrity and actually tries hyping it up like we're clueless idiots.

Well, what did you really expect him to say? Come on now, this is selling 101. Also, those kids that came aboard today need to hear positive coaching. Did your Dad say "Son, you are worthless, but let me know if you ever amount to anything."?

Nah, he did the right thing here. And who knows, he might be right!

So I guess you consider John Kelly woopty doo? He was a 3 star. I'm amazed at some of you who judge people by stars.

For our system they may be home runs. Steve Slaton was a 2 Star at WVU and set a Sugar Bowl rushing record against Georgia. Were any of us all that excited about John Kelly when he committed? We should be more worried about lack of depth at D Tackle and no home run wide receivers.

Amen. TN has had 4 and 5 star recruits who were busts. I will take a three star recruit who has John Kelly's heart and effort any day. A players attitude has a lot to do with how well they end up playing in college.

The WR fallout is a DIRECT result of under-utilization of such for the past 2 seasons. WRs want to play in an offense that is at least 50/50. Additionally, I wonder just how much emphasis was placed on WR recruiting by Debord?

After what I saw with 3* Kelly, if RG is feeling good about those guys, he's earned my trust.

The more I see of Kelly and his demeanor, the more I believe that the 4* RB was "recruited over" to get him a week before NSD. Kid scares me that he's going to hurt himself every time he touches the ball. Has no adjustment speed, just 100% on or off. Beast.

Well, we signed 4 or 5 in last years class,

WRs want a QB who can deliver the ball all over the field and, by default, an OL who can protect said QB long enough for him to execute the throws. We'll see about the latest crop of Tennessee QBs soon enough.

I disagree with you and your buddy, Count. Coach Jones is giving his all for the UT Vols, I do know that. I'm all in on the culture he is cultivating, and he is not afraid to make changes to the staff. A lot of the top ranked players won't commit until a school is winning at a certain level. We haven't reached that level yet, but seem to be on the cusp. If it doesn't happen in a year or two, he will be gone. Until then I am on his and UT's bandwagon. I am proud he is our coach!
