"Special teams, you've got a great opportunity to change field position. I always look at winning that field position battle, those hidden yards," said Gran, a 2002 nominee for assistant coach of the year honors. "Especially in your net punting average and when you're on the coverage teams, where they start and where we start. Coach Kiffin has really put a huge emphasis on special teams, and that's great. When you're around a head football coach who puts a huge emphasis on it, the players really feel that and we're going to use our best players.

"Our best players are going to play on special teams. There will be some units that don't have everyone like that, but you've got to use your twos and you've got to mix it up. I think through practice and repetition and technique, you can win that way and you can beat people that way."

We used to win games on ST, the last few years I was concerned about scoring cause that meant we would have to kick-off to the other team :D

Our offensive staff seemed to share your same concern last season.

that is certainly refreshing... a few years too late, but refreshing nonetheless.

It was Brett Smith... That was about four years ago I think? He recovered an onside kick and took it to the checkerboards. That is the last time I can recall too.

This is why Florida has good special teams. Meyer puts a lot of emphasis on it and is heavily involved. I like Kiffin more and more every day. He seems to be doing all the right things. Hopefully we will see it on the field this fall.

My old football coach went to a coaching convention in Fl and heard CUM talk and he said all he talked about was special teams!!!

hopefully this is the case. setting up the offense is something that concerns me more than setting up our D. giving our quarterback/s better field position is a must.

I think Hefney had a punt return TD called back his soph year. Last of either I can remember counting is maybe Leonard Scott returning a kickoff all the way. Before that I remember Peerless's KR TD against Bama.

I'm hoping they will have open try outs for someone who can consistently kick off into the end zone. So many times our kick offs are taken at the 10 and returned to the 35 or further. Letting good teams have a shorter field in which to operate is dangerous. It would seem somewhere on the big campus there is someone who could kickoff. Tell him he doesn't have to kick field goals, tackle, run or anything but consistently hit or kick through the end zone. Surely a kid would love to wear the uniform, tell all the girls he is on the team, and get his name announced over the PA.
