Coach Doug Mathews Show

Matthews said last week that the second of half season would define this coaching staff. Well it was defined last night. Pruitt is not guy and everyone knows it. We can cut lose at seasons end or hold on to him for another year just like we did with Dooley and Jones. And the program will slide back that much further just like with those 2 other mistakes
2-8 or 3-7 will be the final standings. If Vandy needs to win do get pruitt fired and hire Freeze then I hope it happens

Two schools of thought here.

1. Give Pruitt more time. It’s only been 3 years and one is a COVID year. We still have JG and Butch mindset on the roster. Plus, it isn’t a good look to other coaches that we are cutting bait what is really less than one 4 year cycle. Maybe there is an outside shot Pruitt turns this around.

2. It’s pretty clear Pruitt isn’t it. The game management, coach speak, platitudes, and record are pretty clear. GSU was a warning sign. Stop the bleeding, name an interim, and go get your guy with whatever it takes. We will be roasted in the media for firing someone during COVID and him taking over a program in the dump without adequate time to turn it around.

Both options are not fun and will result in extending, again, any kind of rebuild.

We gotta move on from JG as QB.

Hold on to and improve on the 21 class.

If you watched that game, and have even the slightest idea about football, it was crystal clear that what lost the game versus won the game was coaching. Full stop. Pittman changed at the half, Pruitt did what Pruitt does at the half, and the second half of play proved it. If our administration is accepting this, then simply find a grad assistant to run the program and spend all the extra money on parking space or capital improvements in a third world country.

If Fulmer has not already dangled the golden bag of carrots in front of Freeze, there is no way that is happening.

By the time we lose to Vandy, Freeze's options will be on his table. By the time we are slaughtered by the gators, it will likely be announced where he is going.

It isn't how many times you change, it's about hiring an actual head coach. Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt clearly aren't head football coaches. I wouldn't hire the janitor to run my company just because he sweeps and buffs the floor well.
And the proof point here is that nobody has hired Dooley or Botch as a head coach since.

"Tennessee came out of halftime and:

13 Plays for a total of 25 yards and 5 punts!"

"Why is it we come out after halftime and look like we haven't even had a practice?"

He's actually come out of the gate pretty much calling out the coaching

"This Team is absolutely horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE coming out of halftime...I mean playing, coaching and executing"

Changing the HC 4 times the past 12 years has got us where?

That's because we took a chance on coaches that hadn't been on a stage like UT/SEC. We didn't really know what we were getting. This time we'd have the perfect man for the job. He's done it in the SEC. He's beaten Saban. He's as close to a sure thing as you can get this sid of Nick Saban and Urban Myer. Hugh Freeze is there for the taking. We give Pruitt another year and this time next season we'll be having this same conversation while some other SEC program(AU/USC) will be rolling and winning on the field and in recruiting with Freeze. This is our shot. This kind of opportunity won't present itself again anytime soon. A proven, known coach sitting at Liberty University making half what our bum of a coach is making there for the taking. Just need some bold leadership to make it happen. As I said elsewhere, if I could pull the trigger and buy him out at Liberty right now, I would. Let Tee or Chaney be interim, but get Freeze.

Other teams adjust to what we're doing. We're doing the only thing we can. Once they take that away, what do we do? They're going to sit on the run and force us to put the ball in JG's hands. We all know how that movie ends. No options behind him other than a true freshman thanks to Pruitt sitting on his ass and not bringing in a juco/transfer. At this point, I'd go full youth movement at all positions if they're more talented. You don't lose with upper class players. They had their chance and the results speak for themselves.

I don't know much football, but, it seems like they never make halftime adjustments. Do our opponents have pizza delivered to us at that time?

Stats and "it's about where we are and where we are going" BS. Can't handle that for what...2 hours? Pffftt...

Look, CJP isn’t a HC and I don’t think it can be “fixed”. His attitude has changed as well, so I think he knows this too. Go hire Freeze, retain the best part of the staff and move on. Show the fans and the players the “football caretakers “ are serious about Tennessee football returning to a competitive program.
