Coach Doug Mathews on now

He finally, FINALLY, stopped apologizing and being a mouthpiece for the program and gave the criticism that the team deserves, especially the soft, poor effort giving, incompetent offensive line.

Otherwise, said the team is heading in the right direction, that it’s improving in ways that are difficult to see “with the naked eye”. Said all teams have poor games like yesterday, that all wins are hard to come by....but thought yesterday may have been the worst offensive performance (because of the OL), that he’s ever seen going back to 1980 when he was there.

OL is the single biggest reason we are where we are.

Defense is improving. Yes, good games and bad games as the season has gone on, but overall trend is upward. I thing DBs have improved from the WVA game. Kyle Phillips has taken off this back half of the year and is really showing his talents.

Offensive, we have playmakers. Just OL hamstrings everything because they are not consistent in pass protection or opening holes for the running game. JG has an arm and pretty doggone accurate and will stay there and make a pass knowing he is getting ready to get hit. But geez, until we get a solid OL, we will be extremely painful to watch.

so, I really don't have to listen to Doug when I've already got VN...;)

GO VOLS!

He hit the nail on the head with those comments. They were worse than terrible yesterday destroyed any chance the offense had for success. Charlotte was in the backfield all day you can't make plays when that is happening.

If you know Doug, you know he is a really good guy. He goes to great lengths as to not call out specific players. He called it correctly this week though. Doug knows that this team is at least 2 if not 3 years from competing at a high level.

Doug Mathews is not a mere "mouthpiece" as some say. He just doesn't call for firing of coaches or call out individuals so much. Yesterday, however, he really lit into the offensive ineptitude, alluding to offensive line problems, use of personnel, play-calling, etc. I expect there'll be changes in the assistant coaching staff after this season. OL is problematic.

OL coach and Pruitt are friends. Its easy to see how bad talent and lack of depth effected the line. They will give the Oline coach atleast another year. We are bringing in about 5 or 6 recruits and I would expect to see another grad transfer. Next year it has to get WAYYYY better.

No, the OL coach’s name is Friend. Pruitt’s name is Pruitt.

I hope so, but how often do freshman and jucos make an immediate impact on the line. I think 2020 is when we'll see JP having something to work with in the trenches

Agree, OL play is terrible. All 5 are bad. Coaching vs talent? Both probably. Wolfe at FB is horrible. If your going to run a 21, need a real FB.
Diagree on JG; he has improved but IMO he has reached his ceiling.

Mays is starting at Georgia, and the two tackles (Morris committed/Wright more than likely will commit) are both a lot more talented than Mays

Weren't they teammates at Bama? Will Friend has a good reputation, so maybe that's indicative of the severe lack of talent & toughness this UT staff inherited. Don't know the situation with this offensive staff, but I expect CJP will rattle some cages this week.

Not sure about that. Some in the media have stated Pruitt’s half time comments of, “either coach them or replace them,” was an indication Pruitt will replace Friend if Friend doesn’t start coaching them.

Huge recruits we don't have anyone on the list as important as those two guys.
