I live in Mountain City, TN, which is only 30 minutes from Boone, NC, and Appalachian State University where Buzz Peterson coached. I was hyped when the Vols hired Buzz. I thought he was going to turn the program around, and I respect him for his faith. I was in college playing baseball at the time, and didn't follow the Vols as close as I do now. What were some of Coach Peterson's biggest faults?

He had a penchant for often times not having his teams score as many points as our opponents.

Not a very good recruiter in my opinion. He did have some good finds in bradshaw and lofton, but all in all not a very good recruiter. Not an up tempo style of play that people wanna play and watch, and did not have a good personality with the fans and media. In a sentence, he is the exact opposite of coach pearl.

He also recruited Tyler Smith.

His main problem was that he could coach well enough to keep us competitive, but couldn't coach the guys to close a game. I don't know how many games I sat through where we just gave it away in the last 3 minutes.

That was his biggest fault. He was a great guy, a good coach, and a decent recruiter. He just couldn't squeeze that extra bit out of his players. One other fault was that he got a lot of technical fouls when they only hurt us. Some T's are good to get the team motivated...but not when you're down 2 with a minute left.

Coach Peterson's problems were the following:

Never established an identity for his teams
Never had an option "B" or "C" when the opposing coach had beaten his option "A"
Did not know how to coach a close game in the last minute.

I always thought he was a good person until he was quoted in the media how poorly he was treated at UT and that they didn't give him a chance. Say what???

He's a pious, self important imbecile. Those are his main personality faults. It would overload the board to list his strategic failings.

Texas has played better than anyone in the country to this point. Memphis has a chance to make a real statement next Saturday against Georgetown.

I think Buzz was a good recruiter, after all, Bruce hit the ground running with Buzz's players his first year. I chalk it up more to not being able to use the players he had to the fullest extent. I think he maybe reached his "Peter Principle" level at Tulsa. I was excited when we got him because Vince Dooley had considered him to replace Tubby at UGA, but was forced to take Jim Harrick instead.
