Coach Brumbaugh and the DL

I am new to this board as far as responding or sending any messages so I probably have no right to start now but I thought the D-Line did its job fairly well. There main job is to push and cause mess in middle so the LB's can do there job and I thought the D-Line done that very well. But again that's just my thoughts for what it is worth.
Agree, DL’s job is to occupy space and tie up blockers. They are not necessarily going to have great game stats to indicate how effective their performance is.

I think Brumbaugh is going to be a star, but the DL had a really bad game against SC. Pressure came from OLBs, primarily.

If you look at the stats, our DL had 2 tackles all night: one by Elijah Simmons and the other by Omari Thomas. Matthew Butler had one QB hurry.

Guys like Butler, Bumphus and Garland have to play better.
I mean they do play a 3-4 so they are not really supposed to put up big stats unless u got a Quin Williams, Payne, or Dareus. Their job is to eat up blocks. The fact that our OLB's were able to get pressure means the Dline did their jobs.

We didn't lose a single player from last year's DL.
Depends on how you define it. To me, Taylor lined up most of the time in a traditional coming of the end lineman role, so he counts as being lost.

Your point though still holds. Everyone should be back and a year more experienced.

Rocker didn’t coach Taylor. Subject was the players lost from last season that would have been in Brumbaugh’s charge.

Pruitt's 3-4 probably has worked out better than the last time we tried it. UGH, bad memories.

I haven't seen much talk about the job Coach Jimmy Brumbaugh has done with the DL so far in his tenure here. This was a position we thought we would struggle, but they played fairly well last Saturday. This was also commendable because Middleton and Williams were were out. They were the two most experienced DL that we have this season. He got guys like Simmons (1st career start), Baron, Joseph, Morven ready to play and contribute also. The DL had sacks from Bennett and Johnson (SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week). I was impressed with the pressure they were getting on a OL that Coach Muschamp said was his best that he's had there at SCe. They were in the backfield almost every play and only have up 89 total rushing yards for the game.

I thought they did pretty good. Not great. But, I was really impressed by the size of physicality of South Carolina's offensive line. They were pretty good.

Williams is not the most experienced? He didn't play much at all last year and has been a bit of a disappointment. Emerson and Solomon were ahead on the depth chart. It's the deepest position on the field even with Gooden not coming back. Bennett and Johnson are both OLBs so they aren't coached by Brumbaugh. Felton coaches OLB. The Dline may not have a 1st round pick, but it is loaded with big, physical players. Simmons played a ton of minutes.

To be honest, I thought both the OL and DL played poorly, far below their potential. The OL disappointed me as much as the DL. And that doesn’t really surprise me at all, I guess, given they had no spring camp at all and a chaotic fall camp with many players MIA. I am 100 percent confident that their coaches and they themselves know that they are going to have to make some huge strides over the next several practices or we are going to get pushed around a lot on the LOS this year.

I think it will get better. They got better as the game went on. Simmons has to work on getting off contact at the nose but still filling the gap at the same time. It’ll get better it’s the first game with limited practices. Overall I thought they did well clogging the middle. SC wasn’t able to run up the middle on us.

Both OL's got away with holding. We clean up our OL and the DL will shine if opposition does not.

I don’t think anyone thought we’d struggle at Dline. It’s been considered the strength of our defense all off season

I think a lot of people did and I'm still skeptical. We have talent but we are thin at the DT position. DE was up for debate with Taylor departing. They looked improved last game but I want to see it consistently before I say they are the real deal.

Agreed but lets not be quick to take anything away. There are other teams with more talent that didnt do so good opening the season whether they won or not

That first drive had me worried. I didn’t worry after that.

It's becoming hard to tell the difference between a DE and an OLB
