The coach where Lamaison went to jr. college is upset with CLK. Coach Hugh Freeze said on Sports Time (Memphis) show that he suspected that CLK would not be welcome there anymore because he took a freshman from the program.

Read this on TOS

this was Hubbs' response;

I have not heard that. He is probably not happy that Lamaison left as he had planned on having him another year. But I am not sure how he can fault Kiffin because Nick indicated that he was leaving whether it was Tennessee or North Dakota State.

just about every JUCO coach (in regards to recruiting) makes their freshman off-limits...it is frowned upon to contact/talk to a recruit (unless the coach and player have agreed upon it) who is a freshman in the program

He's the head coach at Lambuth. He was just an interview on the radio giving insight into juco coaches.

In case you hadn't noticed, CLK tends to do a lot of things that are frowned upon. Good thing he doesn't give a damn, or we would not have a QB at all so far in this class.

That's stupid and worse for the players. Every one of them would be beat served by getting into a 4 year program earlier.

Kids are not better served to leave the JUCO early and go to Lambuth. So Freeze probably IS told to leave the players alone as freshmen.
I believe that sending a kid to UT is a pretty big recruiting tool for that coach.

NL was NOT a freshman as far as JC academics were concerned. He completed 2 years of courses and met the requirements to transfer to a four year school. It was the coach who encouraged him to greyshirt his first year, so he is a rising sophomore in terms of eligibility, but a rising junior academically. Freeze might just not know what he's talking about here............

Does TOS have threads regarding unfounded and unsubstantiated rumors posted over here?

Sounds like Hugh Freeze is talking out of his rear. Is he a little miffed at our staff over the assistant coach hiring process or something?

seems to me like a juco coach would want his players taken by a high profile school like tennessee no matter what their year is. would add more exposure to his program and bring in a little better juco guys to his team cause they know he sends his players to big time schools

Agreed. It would look really bad if he didnt want his kid to play at a big school. If the rumor is true why would players want to play for him if he is mad that they will go on to bigger and better things.

like I always say put yourself in front of all the kids that you coach. Its really about me and not whats best for a kid.

pretty selfish coach it sounds like.

My brother played baseball at Lambuth and was very close to a lot of the guys on the football team. From what I learned of him from my visits with my brother and some of the guys on the football team something like this from Freeze is not a big surprise.

So maybe we now know why Lamaison didn't have that many offers possibly?? That's more than just a little selfish, IMO.

Did Freeze speak to the coach out there? Or, was he just basing that opinion off of past experience trying to pull freshmen out of JUCOs. From James Choy's post, it doesn't sound like the folks MtSAC are upset.

If the kid can play and he is qualified academically then he should be fair game. Shame on the school for trying to hold him back and not give him a real opportunity to play college athletics and possibly the NFL. And all for what, another winning season at your JUCO so you can have a season long attendance of 80,000.

There is no way I would hold back a kid. I want them to represent us well at the next level. I just can't get over how selfish it is to take an extra year from a kid who doesn't need to give it.

I wouldn't put any stock in what Freeze said. Lamaison greyshirted and had completed all of his coursework. Also, I'm pretty sure Mt SAC has a solid QB coming up behind Lamaison that played quite a bit last year.

Also, I think I read that the only reason TN knew about NL was because his coach had some connections with our staff. Freeze made a general comment and had no clue as to the specific situation.

Here's what our friend James Choy is saying about it....

A couple of people have come to me yesterday talking about a rumor floating about in Tennessee.

Patrick Barton sent me a comment on my web site asking if there was any truth to a rumor about Coach Freese being upset at Coach Kiffin for snatching Nick Lamaison away from Mt. SAC after playing only one season?

- First off, who is Coach Freese? There isn't anyone by that name that we recognize at Mt. SAC

- Secondly, I went to talk to a couple people including Bruce Irvin and one of the coaches of Mt SAC ...

They had no recollection of any type of unhappiness but instead said, "We are ALL happy for Nick and are extremely happy that Tennessee took him."

There's your answer Mr. Barton and to the fan who asked about that as well.

If any of you know what Mr. Barton is stating, let me know ... it's a bizaare rumor to me.

That's from the Football Forum.

i thought before NL had even officially signed to play here, his coach was openly welcoming the possibility of it. if i remember correctly, his coach made multiple comments about how proud they were that nick was getting interest from a program like tn and they wanted the best for him. could just be media talk, but i am pretty sure it benefits all parties for nick to be here.

There might be a bigger piece of garbage in college football coaching than Hugh Freeze, but one doesn't come to mind.
