Am I the only one that thinks he was letting JC fling it around to see what exact plays he could complete? I think he knew that we could run it down Ohio's throat in the 2nd half and so he let JC have at it in the 1st. I think our D had a natural letdown after the UF game, but I fully expect Monte to show up next week. I actually believe that we had the plainsmen their first loss and hold them under 17 pts.

This is the first year that this staff has been with these kids. They don't know how they did last year except to watch film. IMO, they are trying to see exactly what to expect from these players, so they can better understand what their capabilities are. Practice is good, but not exactly a game time situation. Also, this staff has to gel as a team also. Yes, I think our guys try harder next week. CLK as much as admitted it on his show this morning that the players were overlooking Ohio..........at least, he didn't complain about the flu!

Agreed Rex. I think that makes a lot of sense, I think that if he was going to do it yesterday was as good as any game to do it with....WKU isn't stellar competition, at least Ohio was a team with a pulse....Crompton IMO made a couple of bad throws, nothing too horrible just bad and then the fumble right there at the end which God just happened to bless us with the bounce going our way, Kiffin was testing the waters, I agree with you

I think CLK plans meticulously, and that he is still getting a feel for what this entire team can do. He is doing it with a patch work OL, LB corps and a third rate QB.

Anybody who knows anything about football would know the Vols would come out throwing yesterday.

I think its been established we can run the ball.

Until yesterday, Lane's only game-action view of "Crompton Unleashed" had been against Western. The 'Toppers were so bad no one could get a read on JC.

I am a friend of Frank Solich...he told me earlier in the week that he expected Tennessee to come out throwing, given the circumstances. BTW, he was higly complimentary of Lane.

No you aren't alone, even with some of the stupid threads started yesterday & today.
I think he tried to give some extra things for AU to prepare for, & he's got to work out all these problems in the passing game if TN is going to have any shot at being a competitive team the last 8 games. We can't just keep running the ball down the throats of teams like AU,GA,UA,&SClite. Most of those run defenses are too good with 8 or 9 in the box.We have to have some sort of balance, or at least the threat of some balance

I know we have a lot of holes to fill on defense, losing Nick is going to hurt big time. I was highly dissapointed in Vinson last night. I think we should see M. Johnson and D. Rogan on the corners next week, so that is good news. We can beat Auburn, i dont think they have really been tested yet, besides a terrible WV team that gave the game away with what 6 turnovers. It will be a war but i think we win 21-17.

Yeah I thought that was pretty obvious. I mean Crompton threw the ball 28 times in the first half and Hardesty only had three carries. We still played a sloppy unmotivated game, but we had a lot of guys sitting out especially on defense. If we had decided to just run the ball the whole game I think we could have won 38-13 or so. Nontheless Ohio did have a good gameplan and fought hard. Either way its a win and we got to rest some starters for next week.

IMO CLK used pass plays in the first half because Ohio's defense was playing to stop the run. Ohio's defense wanted to force UT to beat them with the pass.

This is the defense UT will see the rest of the year IMO. Defenses are going to come up, play the run, and force UT to pass because they know this is UT's weakness on offense.

Exactly. Kiffin knew he could treat this game like a scrimmage because Ohio was just bad enough that they wouldn't be able to take advantage of our mistakes enough to win anyway.

We could have just run it down Ohio's throats all night and probably have covered the 3 TD spread. But I think Kiffin wanted to use this game as an opportunity to gameplan for the next 2 games. He needed to figure out which plays Crompton could run and which ones he couldn't.

IMO CLK was calling pass plays in the first half because Ohio's defense was playing to stop the run. Ohio's defense wanted to force UT to beat them with the pass.

That may also have been part of it, but even when they had 8 in the box, UT still generally had success on the ground, particularly with Hardesty in the 2nd half.

I agree, and I think CLK did not think the game would be close enough, that it would bother us, by having this plan.

At this point however, his list of plays that JC can carry out, is small. And it needs to stay that way for the next several games.

So do you think the reason were not seeing some of these guys play is do to the packages, schemes, cause most NFL packages is a Know you role Thing??

I noticed that too. That's when you knew UT was going to pull away.

With the exception of Nick Stephens and Tauren Poole, I think he is giving anybody that is even close to being ready a chance.

Regardless of the yahoos that are calling for wins, Kiffin is playing with house money this year. He wants to win right away, but he doesn't feel like his win/loss record is going to affect recruiting.

I expect a stellar game plan for AU and GA. My guess is that the grand experiment is over now that we are beginning conference play.

Agreed. Lane is very detail oriented, and being detailed oriented is something that other staff lacked, that will be what drives them towards a potential NC
