TFP Article

The NCAA said players can’t practice twice most days, but it has said nothing about coaches, so Dooley and his staff will split the team into older and younger units for the first three days. Older players will practice at about 2:15 p.m., and youngsters will start about 7:45.
“It allows us to give great instruction to slow things down and really do a real good job of evaluating our freshmen,” Dooley said. “I’ve found that when you just throw them all out there together, they get lost early on. This gives us a chance to really evaluate our freshmen and see who we need to invest in a little further.
“There’s only limits on what you can do as a player, not a coach. So we try to grind the coaches into oblivion.”

There is also a nice piece by Mark Wiedmer on Matt Simms.... TFP:Simms

I think this is a great move by CDD. Giving the incoming freshman more hands on instruction will pay big dividends later on in the season if we need them.

Brilliant. He's a smart man. unfortunately, that means we have to wait until later at night to hear about how freshmen are doing.

He has seen this approach before when he worked with Saban, who has been doing it for years. I always thought it was a good idea and wondered why UT did not do it.

The article on Simms just reinforces the reality that we're going to have to wait and see how well our QB's hold up against real game competition and pressure. No experience and nothing proven at this point. However, with that being said, the fact that Simms impressed at the Manning Camp and that everyone seems to be raving about Tyler Bray's talent level should give the Big Orange Nation reason for some optimism. Go Vols!

As long as it ain't cheating...i'm fine with copying anything that Saban does. Apparently, he's a decent coach.

I hated how Kiffin tried to make UT the USC of the East. That never really sat well with me. I can't really explain why, but it just irked me that being UT wasn't good enough for him. However, Dooley keeps doing things the Saban way, which is like having him be the Saban of the SEC East, which makes part of me think that Dooley will be an outstanding coach.

How will Coach Dooley's practice alignment affect the QBs? Can we assume that both Simms and Bray will go with the earlier practice just so that both can work with the veterans? Or will one (or both) work at the later practice? I would think that at least Simms would work at the earlier practice just so that there is a QB on the field. I am very interested in how Coach Chaney is going to work with these guys . . . I think that since he did such a good job with Crompton last year, he should have some great results with these two guys.

Also, does anyone know how Nash Nance is doing? Did he participate in spring drills? I don't remember hearing anything about him, so I thought he wasn't actually on campus at that time.

Both can't go in both practices. I would guess Bray w/ rooks, Simms w/ vets

It's just 1st 3 days...

Another possible good sign about Coach Dooley is something that ByUVols partially hit on in his post: Dooley is using a practice technique that he learned under Saban, but he didn't go to it right away here at UT. Dooley only implemented it when he saw that the specifics of the situation called for it. I think that this demonstrates that Dooley isn't interested in just carbon-copying everything that he saw Nick Saban do. It shows that he has learned from Saban (and others, presumably) and is ready to implement those methods that fit the given situation. At least on the surface, Coach Dooley seems to be demonstrating the traits of a coach who thinks about what he is doing and adapts to the current realities. Of course, we won't know how this turns out until we see the results on the field, but in my opinion this is just another positive indicator.

Okay, answers. I believe that Simms will work with early, Bray with late. It's not that big a deal, as it's only for 3 days that they split.

Also, some guy from Calhoun said yesterday that Nash had increased his bench by a very large amount. Apparently, he's really been working hard in the offseason. I think he'll be a surprise.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking that either QB would do both practices (when would they do their school work?) I was just interested in how Coach Dooley would divide the work over those first 3 days.

I am just very interested also in the X's and O's stuff, especially right now with a new HC trying to establish himself.

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but I'm not sure that a QB increasing his bench is all that helpful in terms of improving at the position.

Nash's increased bench, if nothing else, is probably an indicator of how hard he is working to get ready for the season. I am sure that he is also working on other aspects of his game, too, so the big jump in bench press numbers is probably still a positive sign. Plus, I don't know how big he was coming in, so maybe he needed to bulk up (kind of like Bray, but not quite as much perhaps since Bray was so tall and thin).

Ahh, this makes sense. I thought he was trying to say that since his bench press has improved, that he has improved as a QB.

I think Dooley's plan is to work both Simms and Bray with the early group and Nance with the late group. We'll know soon.

This. Remember the late group is only newcomers. Bray and Simms were both here for spring practice. Nash will be the only QB at the evening practice.

Nash is the biggest QB and he is fighting for the starting spot. Just shows he is woking hard.
