What if Dobbs had been starting the entire season?

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts...

I'll be very interested to see how our D performs after a very very very badly needed 2 weeks of rest. That Georgia/Florida/Chatt/Ole Miss/Bama/USC stretch was brutal on our guys.

Our depth is better but towards Ole Miss our interior DL rotation got exposed. AJ and JRM have been playing ~80 snaps a game.

While our D has made impressive strides, remember they're still another full recruiting class away from even approaching where they need to be in regards to depth and rotation.

more likely 2 more recruiting classes away for quality depth

"* We haven't been returning punts well."

that is a major understatement

"What if Dobbs had been starting the entire season?

he could be getting career ending surgery too ?

Awesome job on the stats.

One thing that I said going into this year, was that I did not expect to see much improvement by way of our overall record (still hoping Team #118 proves me wrong here!), but that we would see our biggest improvement in the margin by which we lost our games.

This time last year, we had five losses just as we do this year; however, a quick look at the scores shows another area of substantial improvement. Last year in our first five losses UT was outscored by an average of 25 points per game. This year the difference is 14.6 points.

Good things are coming folks, and it is going to be a fun ride!

Food for thought: how much different would this poll be if we did'nt come back against South Carolina and are looking at missing a bowl game again?

Or how different if we beat UGa and Florida doesn't make their game winning drive...

Point taken and I agree, but you can't think like that. Take the breaks when they come your way. It was about time.

The good part is I think all these stats will improve over the next 3 games. No more great offenses left. We should run these stats up especially the defensive stats.

I think next years class really has the quality depth especially on the DL. We return the entire Offense next year. WE lose a couple of DL and AJ, but replace with Tuttle and McKenzie on the DL. As long as Maggitt comes back the D will be nasty too. My only concern is who backs up Dobbs if he gets hurt.

If things stay in tact, we will be preseason top 25 and in the conversation for the East at least and dark horse for SEC title.

Incorrect.

Both sets of stats are through 9 games as is explicitly stated in the original post.

Sorry. Glossed over that.

I'm still more interested in the final stats however. And I suspect they'll improve. UK is slightly improved. Mizzou and Vandy aren't as good as they were.

Agreed. I am interested in that as well and I will post a comparison once the season is complete.

What I really can't wait to see is the trendline at the end of the 2015 season, though. If this defense can take another step forward next year, we are going to have some improved results on the field.

OP,
As everyone has said, fantastic job. The amount of info you pulled together and laid out was impressive. Even more impressive was the VOLS improvement as shown by your numbers. Thanks again. Great work.

very good work, OP.

If there is one statistic that jumps out at me, compared to the rest, it would be penalty yardage. Teaching discipline to freshmen and seeing them execute is encouraging

How about that Oklahoma moral victory? They're down 41-14 at home to Baylor and may get kicked out of the polls next week.

Their inconsistency makes me even more excited to see the Vols whip them in Neyland next year.

Another stat which shows our progress is the fact that we are doing a much better job at using tempo.

This certainly was part of the South Carolina win. Their defense was bad to start, but once they were worn out they were incapable of even slowing us down.

Plays per game vs FBS Opponents

2014 - 81 (which is good for 16th nationally and tops the SEC)

2013 - 67.7
