Clay Travis Live Derek Dooley Interview Thread

LMAO, at one point there was mention of "Moose Knuckle" trending on twitter as a question to be asked in the interview.

The funny part was Dooley for the most was ready to tackle the tough questions and led the interview into them himself. Tennessee fans are going to be Tennessee fans and cry and moan no matter how he answered them, but I thought he came off well, and very honest about everything.

What's the point in him giving non-answers? Hell if he took the blame for everything, that'd basically be lying. Why lie? To appease you? At least this way we don't have to sit here arguing without any insight into what actually happened. We have answers from arguably the only person willing to tell it like it is.

Maybe it's possible that the demise of the football team over 3 years with Dooley at the helm had more failures than just the head coach?

most spot on post I've seen. It's laughable how so many in this thread just want Dooley to say "I threw the interceptions. I missed the tackles, I fumbled that ball away on the sack. As I said in my previous post, Tennessee fans are going to Tennessee.

Figured everyone would see the sarcasm in my quote. Guess I should have used blue font.

Once I was on a roll, there was no stopping me last night. There's a good chance I only half assed read your post before responding. Today I'm too lazy to go back and look. :hi:

The world is full of people like Dooley-- people who delude themselves into thinking they're so much better than they are. And even if they work at improving at what they want to succeed at, there will always be others who can do it far better. I'm sure Dooley is an excellent lawyer, but he doesn't have the skillset, the drive or the temperament to be a successful HC like his father or Saban.

I couldn't force myself to look at the article after I saw the headline. Just couldn't do it.

I used to be upset that he got a third year.
Now I'm just glad we weren't sitting at 2 and 10 last season, talking about how it wasn't his fault.
Now my only fear is that we are about to see a another petition to bring back a former coach :)

It was refreshing to hear the man himself acknowledge in words what so many fans thought and said was true about him. A lot of people took heat for their visceral criticism of Dooley at the time. To have him say that yes he is fact an idiot (in his own different words of course) was a nice little bit of vindication. You don't get that much in life. My only lamentation is that he couldn't be honest with himself after year 1. Would have saved so many people heartache and embarrassment.

Wow, a lot of you people are BRUTAL. Dooley was not a very good head coach but the personal insults and attacks are really not necessary. I was just as disappointed with the results of Dooley's coaching tenure as anyone but I wouldn't carry that over into how I feel about an individual personally. I actually think I could sit down with the guy over a glass of sweet tea and like him as a friend. Anyway, he does deserve credit for one thing. When he took over the program, the football team was in really bad APR situation. He turned that around quickly and kept us out of trouble. We could have had a much better football coach that failed on the academic side and we would probably not have a program anywhere near the quality we have right now. When I look back at the way things happened during the Dooley tenure, I see a coach that set the academic foundation for us to have a guy like Butch Jones enthusiastic about having the opportunity to be the Head Football Coach at The University of Tennessee. The rough years should make us appreciate what we have now that much more.

You mean year zero. :p

I don't give a sh** if people thought the interview was good or not. I don't care if people thought he did a good job of explaining or not. I don't care if he is a witty guy or not. I don't care if HIS assistants were to blame for having 13 guys on the field or not.

Spin this crap however you like. Dooley was a piece of crap head coach that just about ruined UT Football. He was the worst coach in UT, possibly SEC history.

I am not going to pat the dumb ass on his back now and say "awwww, it's ok. You did the best you could." That piece of sh** robbed us of millions of dollars while simultaneously dismantling the football program.

F*** him and his stupid assed ceramic dog. I can't even wear my damn orange pants anymore without feeling ashamed!

:the_finger: Dooley!

:clapping::thumbsup::salute:

Not exactly sure where you got this information.

Here are the single-year APR scores for UT football released after each of the last four academic years:

2008-2009: 928
2009-2010: 921 Dooley gets credit for the 2010 portion of this
2010-2011: 934 Full credit for this
2011-2012: 909 Full credit for this too. The worst of the 4 year total

The CBJ years

The football program posted its single-year best score of 972 in 2013-14 according to APR results released Wednesday by the NCAA. That brings Tennessee’s four-year APR score up to 945 after it hit an all-time low of 924 in 2011-12 and moved up to 932 in 2012-13. Tennessee posted a single-year score of 909 in the 2011-12 academic campaign to put itself in trouble.

So in fact Dooley was the coach responsible for the WORST APR rating. The one that nearly had us in even more trouble.

You can stand around and sip sweet tea with him and sing kumbaya if you want, but I wouldn't stand too close, because if I see him, I'm going to walk up and nut slap him.

I love CDD now that he is gone and is someone else's problem. The fact that someone was dumb enough to hire him again is a bit surprising. The man has no business coaching above high school football.

Saw it reported back at the time, which was probably when the score had climbed to 934. Seemed at that point, it was an important issue. Choosing not to be such a negative hater.

I'll give him credit, he is still a master spokesman.
Look at your post carefully.
You are explaining to me how he took full blame, then how he explained the perfect storm of refs and assistants.

I love all my Vol brethren but maybe the older guys are more correct than I give them credit for. This generation seems to have no clue what "responsibility" means.

I'll say it one more time and hope it registers with at least one person.
If he had truly taken responsibility, you guys wouldn't know anything about refs or assistants.
The is no "but" or "except" etc. if you are doing it right.

:good!:

I mostly agree. I think a lot of it is also tied to the fact many of his supporters can't admit his complete failures because they supported him and that would make them "wrong"

Seems to me many of the Dooley apologists are some of Butch's hardest critics. I could be wrong, it happens twice a year.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out for Dooley. He seems to be fishing for another HC job and hooked ol Clay to help him out. UT has been paying DD $1.25M a year, so his income will see a big drop after December. He probably wants a higher paying gig for next year to keep up his lifestyle.

He said in the interview that he's a Southern guy and would like to keep his family in the South-- but who would hire him? Baylor?

"I just want you to go out there and put it all on the line. Every mistake you make out there today is my mistake. Don't worry about them. They're my mistakes."

Butch Jones - In the locker room prior to the Georgia game.

"Don't f*** this up."

Dooley to Parlardy as he is going out to kick a field goal.
