Clay Travis Live Derek Dooley Interview Thread

Not sure what a lot of you guys are talking about. Interview was fantastic. Dooley owned up and took responsibility for what he that he did wrong but explained his reasoning for decisions we perceived as bad and that provided a lot of clarity. The only thing I still didn't agree with was not signing an offensive lineman in that 2012 class. That was inexcusable.

The thing I'm trying to figure out is why? Why have this interview unless Doofey is angling for something.

Just a guess, but it appeared he was thinking about wanting to be a head coach again.
The entire interview seemed to be a way to explain how he's really good at it, just no one else could tell because of circumstances.

And he was even candid about the thinking that went into that. I thought it was about as honest a coach interview as you'll ever see.

I really think his next stop will be as an NFL OC. He's just got a restless mind though, so who knows.

Seriously, you have my curiosity. What did he own up to?
Even the only thing he actually took responsibility for the Kentucky game, he just said it was because he let the players lose it.
That is a start, but he left because of the players hurt feelings, no one drafted is on Butch. He had enough offensive linemen. The ad caused his bad hires. His assistants cause too many men on the field, the refs, the media and finally the fans. Because they had no right to judge his coaching ability.
I'm okay with saying we just see this Worlds Apart, but I really want to know what you think he took responsibility for?

To be honest, I didn't think he was bad at the X's and O's on offense. He just didn't have control over anyone or anything enough to make it happen. He should write battle plans, not oversee their execution. Lol

I don't think we saw the same interview.

I think you're dead on. He's just not an inspiring guy that commands respect.

Well you twisted and misunderstood all of his words best I can tell. I'm not going to try to convince you about anything. We viewed and heard it in two different ways. You seem to have an intense dislike for him whereas I view him as a guy who was never going to be great but got really unlucky and never was able to live up to what potential he had. He admitted that the entire second season was his fault. He said he didn't hold players accountable and let them try to learn on their own rather than being hands on and he said that was the beginning of the end for him basically.

That's cool, but an answer would be efficient also. I quoted him on almost every subject as the interviews took place. Gave the exact person he blamed for each situation, so what interview did you see? :)

He openly acknowledged that he played it way too loose with the players and created an environment where Kentucky could happen. He never said fans couldn't evaluate him. He said he understood the situation Dave Hart was in when he came to Tennessee. He explained the thinking that went on with the o-line but admitted it might not have been a good idea.

Yes I do dislike him. But just because I knew one of his fans would accuse me of twisting, I actually quoted him during the speeches on the parts that I knew would be brought up later.
Beautiful thing about technology though. It would be a real drag but if anyone wants, I highly support them pulling up the video of where he explains how someone else caused the issue. We can start with the assistant coaches being responsible for too many men on the field if you like?

What he actually said was that only a computer guy can judge another computer guy. So only football people like other coaches can judge him.

He said they did a bad job of getting guys on and off the field...which is what happened. He later said that they learned from that and knew not to try to sub at the end of the UNC game.

He's a POS that ran our program into the dirt and then walked away with $5M for his ineptitude.

I hate that ****ing guy.

This is exactly the problem with Dooley. He speaks in terms like that expecting everybody to get the nuance and then people take him literally.

What he meant is that it's dumb for some random guy to build a narrative saying he isn't an X and O guy when they themselves have no clue how to evaluate Xs and Os in the first place.

And he also said it was the position coaches that let it happen? Not him? That is not taking responsibility, this would be funny if you weren't a UT fan.
You called it not coach speak earlier and I do agree with that. I have never in my life seen a coach, talk about what so many others did wrong to explain their career. Candid indeed

He will never be given anything above a position coach job in football.

Thus, evaluation completed, by his peers.
