Nothing earth-shattering here, but I think he's right in that Pruitt is going to have to recruit extremely well if Tennessee is going to be competitive in the East.

I like Tennessee's staff for the most part, but like they say, it's all about the Jimmys and the Joes. That's not specific to Pruitt, though. Top tier recruiting is imperative regardless of who the coach is.

The Wanya Morris commit this week is a good start.

“And look, I think at Tennessee, Jeremy Pruitt is in a tough spot right now. It’s Year 1, but I think Georgia is kind of establishing itself as the dominant force in the SEC East. I think, certainly that Dan Mullen, based on his history and the fact [of] what he has done at Florida already, should do pretty well. I mean, I don’t think he’ll fall flat on his face. And then I think Will Muschamp is doing really well at South Carolina.”

“I think that opportunity for Pruitt to make a move is going to be almost entirely determined on how well he recruits,” Travis said. “I think he’s going to be fine coaching the defensive side of the ball. I’m a little bit skeptical about [coordinator] Tyson Helton on the offensive side of the ball. But I think, ultimately, it’s all going to be about recruiting. And we really haven’t gotten a sense yet from Pruitt about how successful of a recruiter he’s going to be.”

Another thing: I've always been mostly an offensive guy, but man, it would be exciting to be able to watch a lockdown SEC defense at Tennessee.

Those lock down, big play defenses really get the crowd in a frenzy.

I miss that.

Had a slight taste of it during the 2016 Florida game, and it was delicious.

SEC has always been about recruiting at a high level if you want to win and/or compete for a championship.
Nothing groundbreaking there Clay.,....

There is nothing Earth shattering about Pruitt's system on either side of the ball. His success will 100% depend on the ability of the individual players. Recruiting and player development will be paramount. Good news is that I believe he has been given the resources to accomplish the mission if given enough time.

Correct, it has been that way for years even back to the Neyland days. Even then the General was getting players from a lot of places.

It's nothing different that what it's been in the past. Georgia and Florida have had inherent advantages in recruiting over Tennessee for a long time.

Oh, nothing but loud-mouth Clay Travis spewing his opinion.

Nothing to see here but off-season, over-inflated opinions from a guy with a microphone.

Oh man, to see a dominate defense in Orange again would be awesome. If you can stifle the oppositions scoring threat you'll win some games with an average offense.

Offense is fun and the fans love it, just like the home run ball in baseball.
I did notice Pruitt liked going for the deep ball in the spring game, good. A 50 yard score or an interception on the 8 yard line. Either or.

Lastly, It's old school football but your kicker is huge. Flip the field, then pin the ears back and blitz.

Seems as though he only took the job if given the resources. Have we ever had this much money available for coaches? Im excited about next year not for wins or losses. But we may actually have some coaches that understand looking purdy in team pictures doesnt make your play look purdy.

Think what Travis is saying the new coaching hires are aimed at achieveing parity with the west, and need to close the talent gap.

i don't see how that's different. there's a talent gap between us....and several in the SEC.

While Clay is an idiot carnival barker (amongst other things), he is right about this...

Pruitt has a really tough job. He has inherited a team that went 0-8 last year in the SEC, have had 3 middle of the pack recruiting classes in a row, a team way behind due to incompetent S&C program of the prior coach, and a bunch of players that were recruited to run a basic JV offense of the prior coach. Layer on top of this a fanbase that will expect tangible results by 2019 or 2020 (at the latest) and you have a recipe for a tough job, especially when you have to play UGA and Bama every year.

Travis is saying all those things and strongly implying, really stating outright, that he believes TN and Arkansas will fail to get the job done. It's an editorial and that's his opinion.
