Clay Travis: "Good news for Tennessee fans next week"

Tell Clay Travis he owes us a name.
Manning has made no secret he likes Adam Gase. Jets hired Gase off Manning’s recommendation.

White likes Tony Elliott. He told the brass he already had someone willing to take the job, was it Elliott? Not sure, but White hasn’t dealt with donors the way TN has donors. His pressure hires have been basketball and that is his wheelhouse, his family too.

White almost hired Elliott over Heupel and likes everything about him.

I think TN could pull Bob Stoops, and I think they give him a call.

most accomplished head coach since Johnny Majors ?????????????

Majors had a NC under his belt

So, no way we are getting the most accomplished head coach since Johnny Majors!
Not more accomplished THAN Majors...most accomplished SINCE Majors. Nobody we have hired since Majors could carry his jock at the time.

Anyone with P5 experience would be the most accomplished since Majors. He's the last coach we hired that had previous P5 HC experience.

I like the way you think.

Was accused of being a closet OK fan in here a few weeks back.

Just think Stoops is the biggest name out there that is readily available.

Since....since Johnny Majors.

In other words...not more accomplished...not necessarily equally accomplished as Majors. However more accomplished than any of the coaches hired for the role from 1992 forward..

Something to add to he coach interest. Think about their boss for a moment. Who wanted to work for the past few AD's we've had vs Mr White? If you have incompetent or weak AD do you want to work for them? Do you know they have your back? Want your boss meddling? With an AD with his reputation, more coaches should be interested. Outside the investigation, this may be the best environment for a coach to step into since Majors and early in Fulmer's tenure. As I recall Fulmer was critical of UT leadership toward the end. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore and White mentioned it in his comments. So maybe we hit 2 home runs.

the real question is...would Schiano had rolled with JG? Could he have gotten a competent QB? If he played JG too its probably a worse record because I doubt he recruits as well.

Good point. I honestly belibe most head coaches would’ve been able to recognize that despite him having been a to recruit...he was a terrible player. Most fans recognized that the year before Pruitt even got here. Yet for the entirety of pruitts career here he just kept trotting jG out there over and over again. It was like Groundhog Day every game. And every season. We’d have to completely unravel and lost 5+ games before he’d consider playing anyone else.
I do belibe we’d have been better with schiano but I’m glad he’s not here. He belongs in New Jersey

Why would a MAJOR coach that was interested in the UT job call Clay Travis and tell him he would like to get the job. Would one of those coaches not tell his Agent to relay that info to the University. I'm not saying it didn't happen but you must admit that seems odd. From what I have read Lowe and Feldman will be the ones to release the info and make a splash announcement.

I know complimenting Schiano is a No-No on VN but here's my thought process:

Y1: Schiano's teams would have won one of the games that Pruitt's team quit (Vandy or Mizzou) then beat some overmatched Big 10 team in a bowl

Y2: Schiano's team would have beat GSU

Y3: Schiano's team would have beat UK (at home), Arky, and I got to 6-4 by having them beat Auburn

Pruitt's ineptitude as a HC was staggering. Schiano was, currently is, and will be a better HC than Jeremy Pruitt. Schiano won as many games as Pruitt this year (in fewer games) at that sh-tshow Rutgers.
There's really no way you can say that for sure. Schiano could have easily been worse than Pruitt.

Setting themselves up to be disappointed, AD White will hire a good coach but some will be disappointed because they have their mind set on a coach that's retired from CFB

“Realistic expectations for Tennessee football hire?”

Not surprisingly, I’ve gotten a ton of questions all week about the Tennessee football hire.
Let’s begin here with something that will blow the media’s minds. It’s possible for Jeremy Pruitt to have been a bad hire and for Greg Schiano to have been a bad hire too. In other words, one hire isn’t necessarily connected to the other.

If you told me today that Tennessee was hiring Greg Schiano to replace Jeremy Pruitt, I would still be opposed to it, and I suspect the majority of Tennessee fans would too. I still believe he would have been a bad hire for Tennessee.

And while there has been a ton of discussion about the Pruitt firing, I think it was the right decision, whether he’d violated NCAA rules or not. By year three, you know whether a coach is going to work out. Pruitt wasn’t going to work out. He was a poor hire — the Kentucky and Arkansas performances alone demonstrated that — and I was afraid Tennessee was going to give him a fourth year and leave everyone hanging in the breeze.

With the firing out of the way — potentially with no buyouts in play at all — as I’ve been saying all week, I think Tennessee will hire its most accomplished head coach since Johnny Majors. That is to say, the number of proven and high quality coaches who are interested in this job has blown me away. I’m not reacting to any media reports on this coaching interest. I’m talking about coaches who have directly reached out to me to talk about the Tennessee job and express interest in it.

That’s why I haven’t publicly endorsed any Tennessee coaching candidate. There are several of those coaches who have reached out to me that I’d be ecstatic if Tennessee hired. It’s not my decision whom to hire, but I think Tennessee fans are going to be happy with the end result, solely based on the number of quality candidates out there interested in the job.

Indeed, I think this is the best bunch of potential coaches Tennessee has had interested in the job since Phil Fulmer was fired back in 2008. I know the doom and gloomers in national media didn’t believe it, but I told you before the Danny White AD hire was announced that Tennessee was going to be in a good spot with this hire. Now after the Danny White hire, which impressed everyone, I feel even better about the options out there.

That’s especially the case because it appears Tennessee is finally committed to deploying the Travis dump truck of cash theory and finally paying big money to accomplished coaching talents, as opposed to hiring lesser known candidates, paying them less, and hoping they work out.

Which is why I’m telling you that I expect Tennessee to hire its most accomplished head coach since Johnny Majors.

Remember, since Majors, who had won a national championship at Pittsburgh, Tennessee has hired: Phil Fulmer, the then-Vol offensive coordinator who had never been a head coach before; Lane Kiffin, who had been a head coach of the Oakland Raiders for just over a year and gotten fired there; Derek Dooley, who was coming off a 4-8 season as a head coach at Louisiana Tech; Butch Jones, who honestly, was the most accomplished head coach since Majors hired at Tennessee and Jeremy Pruitt, who had never been a head coach before.

When Tennessee announces their next coach, which I think will happen next week, I think all the doom and gloomers in the media are going to flip their takes and be praising Tennessee for making a great football hire and pairing him with a great AD.

And, by the way, I love the quiet way Tennessee conducted its AD search. No real leaks, no wild rumors, just an orderly process that led to a very solid hire. So far, the same thing has been true of the head coach search as well.

Which is why I think good news is coming for Tennessee fans early next week.

All That and a Bag of Mail – OutKick
Nice piece

Bob Stoops again...My god get it through your head, He is NOT coming back to coaching.

You do know he just coached last year and is on the record as saying he enjoyed coaching in the XFL and he looks at potential opportunities to coach each season. Plus the XFL filed bankruptcy and stiffed him for a million dollars. This is what he said about coaching last year.
“I loved it,” Stoops said. “Was enjoyable. Something I look forward to every day. So who knows what will come?”
