Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

I'm not very far into it at all (say, thirty minutes) and the limited combat thus far/general atmosphere of the game and scale make it feel like the true successor to Final Fantasy X that we've been missing for the last 2.5 decades.

I get that Square Enix still makes turn based JRPGs, but nothing on the scale of legacy Final Fantasy offerings. I strongly suspect that this will fill the void for me.

What's even more mind-blowing is this game was made by something like 30 people.

Playing it now. I'm at a point where I've got 4 characters and "the mount". I've killed 2 of the "chromatic" optional bosses that you are to squishy to beat right off the bat. So I have a decent feel for things.

It's absolutely gorgeous. I have a love hate relationship with Souls like mechanics and that has not stopped me from being throughly enthralled by this game. It's by far the best turn based rpg I've played in quite some time.

The fact that I plan to keep playing it to completion and not download Doom The Dark Ages as soon as it drops is about as high a praise as I can give a game right now.

No one has commented in a minute, so I will. This game is absurdly good. It's a watershed moment for gaming in general.

AAA games have been catching a lot of flak, and rightfully so. AA games have been having a moment this gen and Expidition 33 is going to be the poster child for them. It may well be game of the year.

You should play it.

I'll keep that recommendation in mind once I get finished playing what I'm playing.

I would go so far as to say AA games have kind of defined this generation, for me at least. Games like Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Sifu, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Stray, Lies of P, Helldivers 2, Clair Obscure, Stellar Blade, Rise of The Ronin, Balatro, Blackmyth Wukong, It Takes Two, Split Fiction, etc have all been great examples of terrific games that studios didn't break the bank to make.

I would agree. Hellblade, Pacific Drive, Vampyr, Robocop Rouge City, Cult of The Lamb, Evil West, Atom Fall, Sea of Stars, Hades, Hi Fi Rush, Ori and The Will of the Wisps, Control and the list goes on. Most of what I've played in the last few years are AA and indie games.

Expedition 33 stands out to me though. The visuals are AAA worthy and the fact that they have taken the industry by storm using a unique turn based system, when Square said one wouldn't sell is remarkable.

Balatro is crazy addicting. lol haven’t played lol the games you listed, really liked Sifu, thought Kena was pretty boring lol. But I get your point for sure. But I also think there’s been some very top notch Triple A titles since 2021. Like Elden Ring and Baulders Gate 3 are already considered 2 of the best games ever made. I think companies like Ubisoft just give AAA games a bad name with the copy and paste BS they put out there lol

Man, I’m early into this game and what a story so far. No wonder they are already working on a show for it.

Also I’m a sucker for turn-based combat. This is Game of the Year by a mile in my opinion.
