Good. I hope he loses. Looks like the contract is pretty clear. I can testify that UT is having many players sign 2-year agreements.

Just like coaches jumping, it's going to cost the team being jumped to more to get a player because they have to pay a buyout. It's basically just a big donor problem though.

It'll give back a little leverage to schools, like it did with Mensah, but if a school wants a player and especially a school like Texas Tech with ridiculously rich donors, they'll consider it just the cost of doing business.

It'll hurt schools with timid donors for whom a million is real money. Some billionaire in Texas is going to yawn, call a couple of buddies, and they'll write checks to Cincinnati.

These guys want all the big boy benefits with none of the big boy responsibilities. If they want the money, they get to sign binding contracts and deal with the ramifications. If they play like sh*t, they get to get crapped on publicly in the media and by fans.

Players like Nico wanted the bag and they can (deservedly) get all that comes with it.

While I agree with you, I'm not so sure the TTU boosters are gonna continue their spending spree indefinitely

There is some concern within the AD that the influx of cash is kind of vanity project and they are between a rock and a hard place. If they don't win big VERY soon, the money may go away as the boosters will be angry. Hell they almost fired their coach after a 2024 season that was one of the better years in school history

If they DO win big very soon, the boosters may move on and devote their resources to their next "project".after they have successfully purchased a NC for TTU

Granted they see thrilled to have the money available, but as I said it's kinda a double edged sword.

They have multiple billionaires. Several of the TX schools have lots of big money donors and if Bubba gets bored, they can get Cletus to step up

By having a big pool, they can rotate the burden around. Trying to spin money as a problem? I'm not sure that's going to work for you.

The NCAA needs to establish a paid division and return the rest to something closer to the old amateur model. Let the schools pick which they want. Just make a rule that income earners cannot participate in games where the other team has none.

What% of all NCAA athletes across all sports and all divisions get big bucks? Let them get their schools, room and board, medical, et. al. and be done.

Paid division just replaces G League in BB and creates equivalent in football.

This is the way and the schools, like UT, should lead the way and leave the NCAA before they screw up the lives of a lot of non-revenue true student athletes. After that, the schools should sell the pro teams because a university shouldn't own a pro franchise.

They won't because the money is too good and the can of worms opened by a player's union and collective bargaining will cut into their money. Also, a percentage of fans won't follow "non college athletics" despite the current teams having only the barest thread connecting them to the "student athlete" model.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your point about saving non-revenue sports, but what possible reason would a typical UT fan, be it a grad or not, have to devote their time, energy, and dollars into what would in essence be a minor league pro franchise without a connection to the university?

I'm not blind to the reality, and you guys make excellent points about the seeming inevitability of what big time "college" sports will become, but it's hard for me to imagine the typical UT (or any college) fan giving a rat's ass about the equivalent of a AAA or G-League franchise.

It might be the "barest of threads" right now connecting these teams to the school, but the point is that the thread is still there.

There's little reason now to consider these teams amateur or these players "students" in any traditional sense when honestly the fans don't care whether they're 19 or 29 if they can play well and get eligibility.

If you can hang on to that thread that says "yes, this is a UT Vol" and tell yourself "these guys are connected to the school" now, you should be able to do it when the team still wears the T, runs the T, plays in Neyland, etc but the student ruse is gone.

Why not? What SERIOUSLY would change for you?

Not disagreeing with a thing you're saying, but you mentioned the 'thread' that still exists, and many of us are (perhaps delusionally) hanging onto that thread as long as it exists. I don't donate or spend money on tickets any more, my only commitment is the time watching games and the time spent here on VN. It's a long way from life or death.

When the time comes that the "student ruse" is over and it is unapologetically a professional minor league sport, whether or not they wear orange and play at Neyland, it won't be a great sacrifice to give it up.
