Cignetti's performance in pulling that dumpster fire of a program up into the top two in the land and undefeated after making the playoff the year before his absolutely monumental. I wouldn't throw any shade in any form or fashion such a performance. I hope he wins it all this year, because we're not.Just hypothetical.
I know Cignetti has done well at Indiana (Incredible, actually - based on Indiana’s football history).
But, I don’t see ANY way that he could just step in and win like that in the SEC.
Especially in this age of NIL & the transfer portal. (I know those are Kiffen’s bread & butter, but even Kiffen hasn’t had Ole Miss ranked as high as Indiana)….
The BIG just isn’t as tough (Top to Bottom) as the SEC. Vandy’s stadium only holds about 40,000 - but still a tougher road game than Perdue. Minnesota? - Please…..
Every year there are about 10 or more SEC teams in the top 25 & maybe 4/5 from the Big 10.
Any thoughts?
Sad that too many "UT Fans" will bash their own team incessantly but stan for mediocre teams and average HCs...
but it is what it is, you come to expect it from the mouth breathers
This! He is doing more with less & Indiana. His players are fundamentally sound and play smart, physical football. His Indiana team would beat TN. Our offense would move the ball but struggle to get into the end zone -similar to Bama and Oklahoma.OP is questioning if a coach who has…..checks notes….Indiana ranked #2 nationally, and looking dominant in doing so, would be successful at an upper tier SEC program with more resources?
Yes, the answer is yes.
Im closing in on 60, and at no point in my lifetime has Indiana football been nationally relevant.
Cignetti can flat out coach.
Every team has it ls struggles vs. inferior opponents throughout the season.IU has had obe of the easiest schedules in the country the past 2 years. Not taking away what he has done at one of the historical worst programs in the country but there is a bit of shade there truthfully. He just extended his contract so it would take a big buyout to get him. I think he'd be a above average coach in the SEC.
Right now he trails at Penn State.
I hate the Big 10 and often share that I think they are a joke. That said, I looked up this guy and he’s the real deal. He’s significantly improved every program he’s been a part of. Yes, IU has played mid to lower Big teams, but they have absolutely destroyed them. You can’t tell me he has a top 10-15 team. He seems to coach up teams wherever he goes. You can’t say the Vols take care of the lesser teams the way IU does. If I’m objective, I would almost say this guy has one of the best resumes in the country. Especially rebuilding less talented, losing programs.
Minnie! Minnie! Ha! Ha! Ha! GooooOH Gophers!Just hypothetical.

Exactly. I don't really care that most of IU's schedule isn't great. Almost every team on their schedule over the last 2 years has had more talent than them, sometimes significantly more talent. They beat a Michigan team last year that dominated Ohio State. So don't tell me Indiana is just beating cupcakes. We post on a forum that thinks Josh Heupel is a poor coach for a kicker missing vs Georgia and Aguilar getting strip sacked for 6 and throwing a pick in to double coverage vs Oklahoma.
Far too many here have no idea what good or bad coaching even is. They think every single thing that happens on the field is directly because of the 50 and 60 year olds standing on the sideline.
Cignetti has the 72nd most talented team in the country about to make back to back playoff appearances. No reason to question if he can succeed at any level.

If Cignetti were going 9-3 consistently and not winning any big games (like Drinkwitz, whose best wins are against us), then there might be an argument that he isn't a great coach. But when you're winning virtually every game, mostly against programs more talented than you, there is zero argument.
Yup. They are worse than Vandy historically. What I don't get is, Cignettie is winning there and now it's "oh the schedule is easy"....it's INDIANA. As I already posted, they used to constantly lose to the same "easy" teams. He's doing what no other modern coach has been able to do there.
I could buy the argument about the schedule if he were at a place like Michigan, Ohio St. etc. But it's at one of the worst P4 football programs historically.
