Best of luck to Coach Smith, Lance will do fine at DL coach and Sirmon will do good things as LB coach

I am shocked by how many of you are surprised by this...

And no this will not effect any LOI from recent recruits.
I know that it was pretty much a done deal and would happen after NSD. It was only a matter of timing.

Any thoughts as this may be why some big time DL recruits would have backed out after rumors that we had a good shot at them?

Brilliant timing on release.

For who? UT or the players? If I was a new DL recruit that just signed with UT being fed a bunch of bull by Coach Smith I'd feel pretty ripped off right about now. I understand players are supposed to sign because of the University, but their is no denying the fact that there will be some disappointment.

What makes you so sure springbok? Has Sirmon had the opportunity to prove himself already?

Yup.

And for those that don't know yet, this is an upgrade. :hi:
Yeah It is hardly a "huge blow" to the program like the other OP was stating. Funny thing is, people were trying to tell others that this was inevitable but of course people didn't want to believe it.

I knew it was just a matter of time, but what exactly did Wilcox and Smith not see eye to eye on? Scheme? Something else?

It cant hurt to have our best recruiter at the biggest positional need.

Chuck Smith was making a quick name for himself on the recruiting trail. IMO, this staff has taken another set back. Losing Wiley and Smith would have been okay IF they were replaced with equal candidates. Unfortunately, I do not believe that was the case. How well does Peter Sirmon recruit the South?

Hear rumors for weeks on the NFL channel on my sirius radio that several pro offers had been extended to him and loads of NFL type cash, so my guess is he went to Dooley ask for a serious raise and probbaly more input than he and Wilcox wanted to give him so he took the NFL Job, that simple, JMO and guess.

I personally believe they should have filled the position with an African American up and coming D line coach or one with NFL experience this is a major setback.

Aha....explains the cash flow problem in the book store.

Mckeefery is a definite upgrade, he's widely respected as one of the best.

Sirmon playing 7 years in the NFL will be an incredible recruiting pull for kids. NFL and all PAC 10, he knows what he's doing. I hate to lose ccs

Sirmon was the defensive captain and signal caller with the Titans. I've heard several talk about how he has incredible football smarts.

Not sure what the Problem was so I want comment. But Dooley needs to get some TN blood, former player, on the staff, IMHO.

Look at it this way. What's our biggest need for the 2012 recruiting class? DT.

Who's widely regarded as the best recruiter on our staff? Lance Thompson.

Who's now coaching the DL? Lance Thompson.

Lance won't stick just to the DL in recruiting, obviously, but this can only help. Sirmon also has previous experience coaching LBs at the college level.

Lt has been a d line coach at some great aches. Not a setback at all. You're recommending we fill a vital spot based on race would be a setback we need someone proven and lt provides that.
