He's a little over-qualified to accept a GA position. And though he does appear to be a little under-qualified for a position coach, with such a strong background in player developement, a think it's a gamble worth taking. This matches what CDD said about putting together a staff in which one coaches weaknesses are covered by another's streghths. I could see Smith also helping coach OLBs on pass rushing technique if we move to a 3-4. Now we just need a DC to pull it all together.
That's great for Chuck. One problem here is that the HC is filling postions on the defense with a DC. Wouldn't you think that any good coach out there that wants a DC job would like to have a say so in his staff?????? Just a thought, this may keep the Vols from getting a good DC
So now we are hiring a consultant that is still a DE in the NFL to coach our DL, and we are not sure if he can recruit, that has supposedly been let go by the Jets, where he never coached.
watch this. awesome!

The most important part of bringing Smith on board is he has proven that he can not only teach technique to young players, but he has proven that he can also take good technique and make it better.
As a Dlinemen just like an olineman the game changes when you get to college. Over the years since his playing days ended Smith has worked with a few raw prospects with upside and they have been better off for it. That tells me a lot. It tells me he probably teaches good hand technique (key for any DL), and he hopefully teaches a variety of moves.
Can you imagine if you were a recruit and in walks Chuck Smith who can talk about picking Tennessee when it wasnt his home town school, can talk about developing Dlinemen that are currently playing in the pros, and can talk about coaching in the pros (I dont care that he was a consultant or whatnot, he was teaching technique pretty much). This guy is young and should bring a great fire (he always had it as a player, I cant imagine there is not a ton of passion with this guy) and a proven track record of helping develop players.
