IMO losing Chuck Smith has hurt our DT recruiting, he just had that personality that attracted HS DT's & the NFL background to close. I think LT will struggle to recruit DT's to Tennessee.

Seemed like having Chuck Smith hurt our recruiting, tbh.

Go back & read quotes from some of our signees out of the '11 class, AJ Johnson said the only reason he re-committed to Tennessee was b/c of Chuck Smith, the only reason we got Jernigan on campus was b/c of Chuck Smith.

It was is attitude toward the coaching staff that got him "fired".

I also remember stories of Dooley having to step in and "save" some recruitments.

Like who? DT's loved Smith. I don't recall anyone being saved by CDD. JMo is right about Jernigan, nobody but Smith there.

Chuck could flat recruit, but he couldn't get along with the other defensive coaches.

Coming down to NSD, Chuck helped us get some players on offense.

Sure he put us in a good situation with Jernigan, but he wasn't going to come here anyways. Chuck never did seal the deal with big time recruits. We essentially replaced him with Sirmon (different positions I know) and Sirmon has had a bigger impact on relationships with players more than Smith did all last year.

LT is twice the recruiter smith ever was... I don't agree with this. Tennessee is in good shape with a lot of dt prospects compared to last year. How many 4 star dts have serious interest in Tennessee this year compared to last year at this time?

Jernigan said himself that if Tennessee had been on him sooner things might have been different.

Smith might not have closed on alot of the guys but atleast he had us very much in the mix for them. Smith closed on AJ Johnson & thats straight from AJ's mouth.

LT has relationships built w/ coaches for years, Smith had half a season to build relationships w/ coaches & players, even though we will never find out I'm willing to bet that if Smith was still here we would already have a couple big time DT's committed. As I mentioned, Smith had the personality & NFL background that recruits loved, he was going to be a force on the recruiting trail once he built relationships.

What good does that do for the university if they are not playing for it? You just named one recruit. Lance and Peter are much better recruiters than that arrogant one who left.

I don't agree jmoore. Dooley is just slow with his recruiting process. They could have had Borne already if they wanted a dt. He's not big time, but the closest thing they would have gotten if it was smith or LT coaching at the position.

Thompson is one of our best recruiter if not the best. He should be able to go in GA and get some DT's

on a lighter note, does anyone know what CCS is doing now? There were many rumors at the time of his departure that he was leaving for an NFL position.

Chuck may have been a great recruiter. Depends who you believe on that issue. Dude is f'n crazy though. No doubt about it. His press conference thing he set up was all I needed to watch to know he needed to go.

Fact is, LT is no slouch. He will recruit some very good to great DT's if he stays here. Much better on X's and O's also.

At least LT can count.....................to answer the OP, no, I dont think firing CCS will have a big impact on our recruiting.

Don't know if you are just making an observation or saying you wish he were still on staff. If it's the latter, you apparently missed his rambling non-sensical exit "news conference". Anyone who saw that, should have no qualms with his dismissal.

This is all moot. Apparently DD thought he was a distraction and did not get along with Wilcox because of way he coached and him not cooperating with Wilcox's plans. The negatives in the way he coached outweighed the positives with recruiting in DD's opinion. Given that CS was a good friend of DD, Dooley must have felt strongly enough about this to override the friendship. I defer to DD's judgment in this case.
