Chris Weinke Value as QB Coach?

He doesn't have to be a dynamic play maker to see that he's in a better spot now than he was against GA st. The kid is just a headcase.
I guess we just disagree there. He looks like the same Qb that started the season to me. And honestly, I just want someone to beat him out so there is not a repeat of this to begin next season

I get what your saying. I'm just over this Jekyll and Hyde show with Tano. In my opinion, it's time to develop what can be developed. I don't believe Tano can be "fixed" and ready to move on. He can show flashes at times, but also is responsible for many head scratchers for a four year guy

JG is damaged goods as a QB. Developed some sort of mental block that rears its ugly head about 50% of the time. Coaching staff has found ways to overcome this and extract his skill set at times. Very glad it worked out in the gator bowl. No ill will for JG from me. I think he honestly does the best he can and at times its terrible and at times it has flashes of something great.

You keep saying better now than GA State. JG was 26/40, 311 yards passing, 2 TDs, 1 INT, and a 60.1 QBR against GA State. Against Vandy he was 6/17, 120 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT, with a QBR of 49.9. Last night he was 18/31, 221 yards passing, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, and a QBR of 15.5. I would say he is more experienced now, more comfortable with Chaney and Pruitt, but not necessarily better. Again, he is who he is. I wouldn't call him a headcase either. He appears to be a very good kid who tries to do too much and makes some really bad decisions on the football field.

You are 100% spot on. And I think when people like myself say he is a head case, I don't mean he is mental, just that what he's learned on the practice field doesn't transfer to the games. He is all Vol and love that about him, just believe we should and can have better QB play. The coaches have definitely had their hands full this season and with the injuries it's been no easy task

Totally agree. I really like the roster CJP is putting together, but we must have better QB play. Coaches have done well. SEC record of 5-3 with all that's gone on is impressive.

Considering where JG was at the beginning of the year and where he is now, yes. If you don't think JG hasn't developed you're blind.

I dont see any development in jg. But I dont blame weinke. I blame whoever says jg should be starting. I think weinke needs to stay see what he does with other qb then make decision.

When John Smoltz was with the Braves, he used a Sports Psychologist in 1991 after starting the season 2-11. He finished the season with a 14-13 record. Perhaps JG should consider the same.

Problem is I think either of 2 backups are better than jg, but not given the chance. I mean one little mistake and they are pulled from the game. New qb are gona make mistakes, let them develop. If that had been done this yr we would be setting really well for next year. Our progress has been set back a year because of not letting new qb get game expierence this yr.

The two backups didn't make "one little mistake." Further, both were given chances to "get game experience" and neither was ready for prime-time. These guys aren't Peyton. They aren't Dobbs. They aren't even Rick Clausen. Both backups clearly showed they have some real talent, but neither back up took reliable care of the ball and neither exhibited any where near a firm grasp of the system. There is a reason they are backups. They were not top drawer recruits out of high school and they have little to no experience. They need to watch, learn and work on their skill sets. Despite how maddening JG was throughout the season, he was demonstrably a better option than either of the other two quarterbacks---not great by any stretch. Just better.

Come on guys, we have a QB Heisman Trophy winner who's in the QBs ear after every series and everybody tries to put the blame on Cheney? Just what value does Weinke have as a QB Coach and a Recruiter? I know he has ties to IMG, but is he earning his keep?
I don't think it's one OR the other...I think it is both. Chaney is never going to be a championship OC. Good? yes Elite? No. (go look at the total offense rankings for the past 10 years where he coached. Weinke just isn't getting it done recruiting or coaching.

Let’s just call it like it is, we don’t have a real major college QB on the team. I don’t understand why we keep putting the same guy out there and seeing the same result. I’d sure try something different, what we are doing isn’t getting results.
Because he knows the playbook, he can read defense, he can audible, the game is slower, makes better decisions believe it or not and he's tough. I like Mauer, but he makes poir choices, game is still too fast for him, he panics, tries to do too much, injury prone, offense is limited. He's simply not ready YET. JG gives us a better chance to win even though he's cost us a few. HOPEFULLY, HB is good enough and ready as a TF

Then JG's numbers should've steadily improved over the course of the year, but they didn't.
  • first 6 games: 67 of 105 for 856 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs = 149.8 passer rating
  • last 7 games: 85 of 152 for 1,302 yards, 8 TDs, 4 INTs = 140.0 passer rating
And JG recorded 2 of his 4 lowest QBRs this season in UT's last 2 games, while his final QBR of 66.9 was down from 2018's 68.0. As you said in a follow-up post, "he's inconsistent"...agreed, and he's wildly so.

Guarantano's QBRs by game this season (3 highest, 3 lowest):
  1. 38.6
  2. 62.7
  3. 99.1
  4. 24.1
  5. 75.8
  6. 99.1
  7. 45.2
  8. 93.1
  9. 45.3
  10. 97.5
  11. 93.0
  12. 42.6
  13. 16.7
