If Butch is seriously considering Weinke and Dorsey as candidates to develop our QBs, I would think that suggests something about how Butch expects the QB competition to turn out. I talked to QD's mother at one of his HS games. At that time, Dobbs was just beginning to have great success running the ball. She said that the family was really concerned about Butch being committed to a running QB system. She said that Butch called and assured them there were no implications for how he would use QD. Not saying pro-style people can't adapt to a spread offense, but why not hire a spread guy to begin with?
Couldn't agree more. The biggest weakness of the offense was oline play without a doubt. Has been since Mahoney has been the coach. Improved some in 2015 but regressed this past season. Hopefully with the new strength coach and maybe, just maybe, a new oline coach things will improve. Although Walt Wells may be the leading candidate to replace Mahoney according to some. Not sure if that would be an improvement or not.Facts are, unless Mahoney shapes this OL into something decent, we have to have a running QB. Dobbs masked issues that the general fan doesn't catch. Our OT play is below average most games. That's why Bama steam rolled us. We need better depth, better development, and stronger players at OT. Hopefully the new S&C coordinator helps.
In terms of a QB coach and his style, I think we need someone who can simply teach basic fundamentals. Dobbs had solid arm strength, but his footwork and arm motion weren't solid at times. We need someone to teach our QBs great fundamentals, whether it's throwing on the run or in the pocket. Most "true" spread QBs don't have issues throwing on the run. It's the footwork in the pocket and reading defenses in the pocket that they tend to struggle with. We just need someone to come in a lay a solid foundation for our QBs, and then let the talent do the rest. We have a lot of talent at QB. Just a little coaching, good coaching, will go a long ways.
