Chris Petersen thread (merged)

So while actively trying to avoid all the Mullen and Gruden crap this morning I poked around on the web and in other forums here.

Petersen definately has the pedigree, the salary seems workable as well as buyout, he sounds like he’s looking for a change. He fits the bill and is a proven P5 winner.

Wish I had researched this guy more before. How do we NOT consider him if he is interested. He’s career west coast. But if he would move east make him say no?

What is the source of all the chatter about Petersen today? His name has been out there a while but I always considered it a pipe dream like Patterson, Franklin, Shaw, etc. What caused this spike in the talk about him today?

No and I think a lot of people are putting too much emphasis on his rant about their kickoff times.

This^. I don't think his frustration with Pacific coast kickoff times would be great enough to make him want to leave a job, and a region, he loves. If he actually is in play, it is for reasons other than start times.

My bad, didn’t see anything new today. I just paused and read the stuff from the last few days on everybody else not named Gruden, Mullen, Kiffen, etc...

I feel like an idiot after reading the Petersen stuff. He would be an awesome catch, he sounds like he wants to make a move, and his salary is workable.

I’m pretty sure I read there is friction with the AD?

Despite the buyout, watch Campbell.

I've thought about it and I said he is Jones 2.0 in the Campbell thread, but the more I look at it he's McElwain 2.0. McElwain was a sure thing, high powered O, QB whisperer hire for UF. We all see how that turned out.

I get it that Campbell had a couple good games this year, but he also lost to a bad Texas and an Iowa team that just proved exactly how bad the B1G really is by beating an overrated OSU, and average WVU and an always overrated Oklahoma St. So yes he did beat a top 5 and a top 25 team, but he also lost to 4 other teams, only 1 thats in the current top 25, 1 thats 7-4 and 2 that are 6-5.
To me this says hes essentially 2016 Butch Jones. He will pull off a couple big wins, but then falter against weaker teams.

If we have to drop to this level for a coach I'd take Taggart or even Brohm over a one year wonder.

Had McElwain kept Will Grier Butch would have been fired last year and he would still be coaching at Florida.

Agree that Campbell is a coach worth consideration. However in comparing with Petersen could you not agree Petersen has the longer sustained success and championships. Campbell has two MAC west championships. Petersen has one PAC12 one PAC12 north and four WAC championships. And Petersen is actually more affordable. Doesn’t mean we don’t spend the money. It means we give Petersen more budget for his staff. An even bigger boom.

Both seem strong on player development which we sorely need. The case at this point just seems much stronger to Petersen to me when comparing these two.

I heard on the radio he may have some interest and may have been contacted. If so he definitely moves to number 1 on the coaching list. Lets hope he is tired of the West Coast and lack of publicity.

There’s less than zero chance Petersen moves from Washington to Tennessee. Why in God’s name would he move from Washington, which was a destination job for him, where he’s got it rolling and has them nationally relevant.....to the ish show that is Tennessee Vol football. No way is that happening imho.

Lol KB you’re even more of a bundle of sunshine than usual this morning. Have a Snickers dude. Heh

Edit: btw I read somewhere his representation reached out to TN a couple of weeks ago? And it isn’t Jimmy Sexton either!!!

lol. Not in much of a mood for the coaching threads today....should probably just stay away today.

That said, I’ve pretty much resigned myself that there will be no big name, major, splash hire. It’s gonna be Campbell, Norvell or somebody like that imo, which, quite honestly, I’m fine with.

I don't see that happening 9+ million due in 45 days of him taking another job. And then you have to pay him at least 4+ million on top of that? Why would you pay that for an unproven commodity when Petersen could be had for probably less money up front? You start talking 8 million a year and names like Petersen and Patterson become less a pipe dream.

Brohm and Campbell's career arc is almost identical. Except Campbell actually has some huge top 10 wins with a backup QB and is poised to have Iowa State win more games than they have in 17 years. So what has Brohm done to justify wanting him more?

More exposure, prime time, big name team that he can make himself a legend at. Extremely passionate fan base that will sellout every game when we’re winning and will still fill it up pretty well when we’re losing. Even with Washington rolling they’re pulling in at best top 20 classes. They’re #15 playing #14 Washington St. and that won’t get a tenth of the attention of the iron bowl.

Agree

I would think that playing Saban every year with our resources would be tempting to a coach that wants to be the best.

Ish show, huh? Washington wasn’t this coaching shangri-la either. Neuheisel,Willingham and Sarkisian. Fun fact: Sark didn’t discover alcohol after taking the USC job.

Well for 1 he is a top 5 coach in the nation and paid top 20 money (and that is after a big raise this year). At Tennessee he could be paid 8 mil and top 4 money.

Another reason if he has a loss at Washington he still has to hope..... If he has 2 he has no chance at a playoff. At Tennessee if he lost one game and won the champ he would be in no question. If he lost 2 but won the champ he still has a chance.

More money for pay, for staff, for facilities, for recruiting.......for anything. Petersen could recruit better players..... And has the chance to play top teams every year. Also on the national stage you hear more about a down Tennessee than you do a 2 loss Washington.

Sure he has a good gig but he has put in the work and prob wants the best and most he can get.

Not saying he certainly comes to Tennessee but he knows what a Tennessee has to offer and it is a lot more than Washington........also it is only 2 seasons into his good stuff at Washington........ Not like he is against building what he wants..... He started it there just 4 years ago.

Who cares? He certainly doesn’t seem to. Stayed at Boise State forever until the one job he wanted, the one job he would actually leave for opened up. He’s a west Coast guy who currently has a much better situation than the mess and crap he’s have to deal with in Knoxville. He won’t even entertain an interview with Tennessee imo.
