We have been talking about how amazing this hire would be, but do we have any credible information about this actually happening?
I know LWS posted "Petersen" in the "who do you think the new coach will be" thread, but what other sources are saying this is even a remote possibility?
Have we had ANY credible infornation about ANYONE since this search has began? I am not trying to be an azz or anything just saying it seems like we really havent heard anything concrete since Butch was fired.
I will say this, If the rumor is true that Currie has offered Gruden 10 million a year, then he bettef dang well offer Petersen and Patterson at least 7-9 million a year. I really dont think there is any REAL info about any potential UT HC. I believe Currie is keeping everything tight lipped. Now that could be a bad thing, but my gut tells me its a good thing.
If we dont get Petersen, then I hope we never hear the reason why. If we were to end up with Mullen or Norvell and we were to later learn that Petersen was never offered, then that will leave a really sour taste in my mouth.
Honestly....the more I read on here, and the more I followed the Gruden thread...
The more I believe nobody knows anything.
However, if by whatever chance, it IS Gruden....then I will be wowed at the information that was on here. Because there HAVE been at least CONSISTENT reports in the Gruden threads. Just nobody knows if they're accurate or not. Several people dropping hints that the deal was done around the same time.
But for all we know, that could have been the same person making different accounts and having them all echo each other, and of course, we would be too blind to see it.
In 2008, I combed VN and read the threads on all of the candidates, and then read "Lane Kiffin announced as UT's newest head coach." I immediately went to Google.
In 2009, I combed VN again, and read threads about all sorts of rumors and interviews and whatnot....only to google "Who the french toast is Derek Dooley?"
In 2012, I combed VN again, and got sucked into the Grumors, and read threads about Gruden and Gundy and Patterson and Al Golden (glad that one didn't turn out) and Charlie Strong, and at the end of it, Googling who Butch Jones was.
3 Times we've searched for a coach since Fulmer, and 3 times, it ended up being someone I hadn't even seen on here. We tracked planes, cited journalists, tweeted, and started threads for every coach in the Power 5, and then some...
And so I just am gonna sit back this time, and not get sucked into anything. It may be Gruden. It may be Kermit Davis. It may be Al Golden. It may be Jim Bob Cooter. It may be Brady Hoke. It may be Butch Davis. I have no idea.
And nobody else will until we hear it from Currie.
This needs to be in every Gruden thread.
No and I think a lot of people are putting too much emphasis on his rant about their kickoff times.
You certainly cNt put too much on one thing; however he has now started twice that he was disappointed in the lack of exposure.
Maybe the first time you chalk it up to being upset.....but twice? Also saying it don't change it and he knows that.
It is not just that.....his kids are now older....and anyone can see how the SEC has a leg up on really any conference. If you win the sec with 1 or even 2 losses you are prob in the playoff.
Also he is one of the best coaches in the nation...... Yet he only makes around 4.5 mil......and that is after a raise this year.......and schools like Tennessee could pay 8 million
If you were a top 5 coach would you want top 20 money? Money isn't everything but pride is something and most would want to be recognized as they were one of the top coaches...... At Tennessee he could become the 4th highest paid coach.
There are the "name" Universities in each conference.
In the ACC, there's Clemson and Florida State and Miami. If you're one of them, and you win 10-12 games, you might get in the playoffs. Otherwise, unlikely, no matter who you are.
In the Big 10 there's Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and now Penn State. If you're not one of them, you're going to have a hard time getting in the playoffs. Wisconsin is proving that as we speak.
In the Big 12, there's Oklahoma and Texas. Okie State and Baylor occasionally get credit, but it's pretty much fact that if TCU went undefeated and Oklahoma went undefeated (assuming they didn't play each other), Oklahoma would get the nod over TCU for whatever reason.
However, in the SEC? Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. Those 5 schools are the "names." And they'll get exposure. And if you win? You're going to get that media attention. The winner of the SEC has gone to the playoffs each year.
And honestly? Washington got torched by Bama last year in the playoffs.
You think Pete may want some revenge on Saban? Just a thought.
Just think he'd love to get in at a "name" school that he could win and get the credit he deserves, and get propelled up the rankings.
Petersen is my favorite coach. If we hire him I would absolutely lose it. I dont even know how I would take that in. My mind cant process it.
If we even have a 1% chance to get Petersen we better give it everything weve got. If that means 10 million then you pay the frickin man 10 million. Ill spend all my money on season tickets and live in a cardboard box.
Me too. Especially with Steeles familiarity with the SEC. although I think his current DC has been with him for a while and would probably come with him
Which is fine by me. That defense at Washington has been legit the past few years. And they have developed some good talent that turned pro. I really hope Petersen is the guy. This in my opinion is the biggest home run hire we could make in terms of total package.
I get the gruden mania and vfl type thing. But there are questions with him. However Petersen would be a grand slam.
The Lake guy that coaches DB's for him is a big timer. If we make a Petersen level hire, we'd better let him bring his own staff. I think chemistry issues were a big problem the last couple years of Jones tenure. The staff Petersen would bring with him might not make a lot of SEC fans stand up and cheer, but he knows how to win with them. I really can't imagine a better hire than Petersen.
Nope
When Justin Wilcox left BSU it took Petersen all of 5 seconds to name Kwiatkowski his new DC. Kwiatkowski had a good shot at the BSU HC but chose to follow Petersen to UW. IF Petersen comes to Knoxville (he won't, but if he did) Kwiatkowski will be his DC.

Dont know if I agree about Petersen's staff being good in the SEC. I honestly believe if Petersen came here, he needs guys with SEC experience. Like Steele at DC.
